5 things Alabama fans need to know before Atlanta Opening regional
quote:
ATLANTA — Nike’s regional camp tour is underway, with a Sunday stop in the Atlanta metro area next on the docket. This particular camp will host plenty of targets on Alabama’s radar for the 2019, 2020 and even the 2021 recruiting classes. That includes some newly offered targets and ones that have recently made their way to Tuscaloosa for various visits. Some of the state of Alabama’s top recruits will make the drive to the Peach State, too. SEC Country will be on hand for all the action beginning at 9 a.m. ET Sunday. Here are the five biggest things to pay attention to:

Will Taulia Tagovailoa emerge as the best QB in attendance?
The Atlanta Opening regional is expected to have several top 2019 and 2020 quarterbacks in attendance with Taulia Tagovailoa, one of Alabama’s top targets, being one of them.
Tagovailoa, the brother of Tua Tagovailoa, had a very good junior season after moving from Hawaii to Alabama to play for Thompson High School in Alabaster. Tagovailoa threw for 3,820 yards and 36 touchdowns to only 8 interceptions.
There will be stiff competition for Tagovailoa on Sunday, though. Also expected to attend the camp are 4-star prospects Bo Nix, who’s committed to Auburn, Graham Mertz, who’s a Wisconsin commit and Sam Howell. The 2020 class will be represented with two of the best in Georgia with Harrison Bailey, a major Tide target, and Max Johnson scheduled to throw. Aaron McLaughlin, arguably the top 2021 quarterback, will be there, too.
This event will be a good measuring stick to see where Tagovailoa stacks up against some of the best QBs in the country.

Does Alabama really have a chance to flip 5-star Georgia commit?
Nolan Smith II, a 5-star defensive end from IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.), is expected to attend the event. Smith is one of the Tide’s top Jack linebacker targets in the 2019 class. He’s visited Tuscaloosa numerous times but has been committed to Georgia for over a year now.
Smith was back in Tuscaloosa last month for a visit and told SEC Country that Alabama has a “big chance” to flip him. One of Smith’s close friends, 4-star defensive back Jaylen McCollough, told SEC Country earlier this week that he believes there’s a chance Smith could end up playing college football at a school not named Georgia.
Smith chose to not divulge the strength of his commitment status in the interview linked in the previous paragraph. We’ll see what he has to say on Sunday.

Where does Nakobe Dean stand?
Nakobe Dean, a 5-star prospect from Mississippi, visited Alabama early last month and is one of the team’s top inside linebacker targets in this class. He told SEC Country earlier this year that Alabama and LSU were two schools that would definitely be in his top five. His decision could come down to Alabama, LSU, Ole Miss and Mississippi State.

Two Alabama commits in action
Alabama will be represented at the loaded camp on Sunday with 4-star outside linebacker commit King Mwikuta and 2020 4-star cornerback commit Javier Morton expected in attendance.
Mwikuta is locked in with the Tide. He may take additional visits, but it would be a surprise to see him back off his commitment. SEC Country did a feature story on Mwikuta playing for his late mother. I suggest you give it a read.
Morton committed to the Tide under former defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley. Because Morton committed so early, it would not be shocking to see him reopen his recruitment. It’ll be interesting to hear how often Alabama is in touch with him.

Top targets from Alabama expected to compete
Atlanta will be flooded with some of the Tide’s top in-state targets. In addition to Tagovailoa mentioned above, the following players from Alabama are expected to compete:
5-star center Clay Webb
4-star wide receiver George Pickens (Auburn commit)
4-star linebacker Mohamoud Diabate
4-star defensive lineman DJ Dale
4-star linebacker Vonta Bentley
4-star cornerback Christian Williams
3-star cornerback Cordale Flott
2020 4-star athlete Kristian Story

The Opening Atlanta: Top perfomers

quote:
BUFORD, Ga. – The Opening Regional in the Atlanta area on Sunday was not for the faint of heart. It was cold. It was windy. And if you weren’t a Power Five level prospect, you were going to have a long day of work because this event was loaded. These are the top performers from the most talented event of the year to date.
quote:
Alpha Dog
Nolan Smith is what five-stars are supposed to look like. The edge rusher committed to Georgia out of IMG Academy measured in at 6-foot-3, 234 pound. He ran a 4.51 40 yard dash (one of the fastest times in the country), and posted a 39.6 inch vertical, a 4.15 shuttle and a huge 44.5 foot powerball throw. But it’s not just the testing numbers the set Smith apart. If he lost more than one rep in 1on1s, we didn’t see it. He was devastating as a speed rusher and deserves some discussion as the nation’s top prospect.

Next Five Defense
1. Chester Kimbrough, CB, New Orleans (La.) Warren Easton – His first two one-on-one reps of the day were a breakup and an interception and that’s pretty much the way his day went. He challenged the best receivers at the camp and was the only defender to regularly win against those guys. He’s got a loaded offer list but his recruitment is wide open currently.
2. Nakobe Dean, LB, Horn Lake (Miss.) HS – He’s a thumper and a striker on film but Dean showed a diverse skillset on Sunday. He was great in Cat and Mouse drill but he was also smooth in coverage and very good as a pass rusher. Auburn, Alabama, Ole Miss, Georgia, LSU and Stanford are among the contenders.
3. Kevin Harris, DE, Loganville (Ga.) Grayson – A slender, speedy edge rusher, Harris was a poor man’s Nolan Smith as a guy that was just a terror off the edge. He’s a great fit as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense and Alabama, LSU and Miami are among his favorites.
4. Jaydon Hill, CB, Madison (Ala.) Bob Jones – Going through drills, Hill was one of the most fluid and effortless defensive back and he carried that over into a really competitive effort in the one-on-one portion. Visits to Georgia Tech and South Carolina are on deck.
5. Derrick McLendon, DE, Tucker (Ga.) HS – Similar to Harris and Smith, McLendon dominated with speed on the edge. His get-off was just more than any offensive lineman could handle. He didn’t even need a counter. Alabama, Florida and Georgia are among the favorites.

Top Five on Offense
1. Jadon Haselwood, WR, Ellenwood (Ga.) Cedar Grove – If not for the freaky performance by Smith, Haselwood would be the alpha dog from the event. He consistently beat everybody he faced downfield with his speed and with his size. He just has too many tools for DBs to deal with. He’s committed to Georgia.
2. George Pickens, WR, Hoover (Ala.) HS – The Auburn commit had some of the most spectacular plays of the day at wide receiver and he gave Haselwood a run for his money as the best receiver at the event. He’s a big powerful bodied receiver but he showed legit speed downfield and he has the ball skills to finish with spectacular catches.
3. Harry Miller, OL, Buford (Ga.) HS – A bullish, tough guy on the interior, Miller was totally dominant through most of the day. He can play center or guard and showed the feet to complement his really powerful punch and anchor. Miller won the OL MVP and has Ohio State, Georgia, Stanford and Clemson among those chasing.
4. Jeremy James, OT, Cumming (Ga.) North Forsyth – James was impressive during drills, pulling and moving laterally but when it came time to pass protect and get physical he was also among the top players in attendance. He was also the only tackle to beat Nolan Smith that we can remember. James has Duke, Ole Miss and others chasing.
5. Tank Bigsby, RB, Hogansville (Ga.) Callaway (class of 2020) - The most complete back in attendance in terms of his ability to make defenders miss, ability to catch the ball and even show toughness as a blocker, Bigsby had a really strong day. Georgia is the early favorite here.
We might have to re-think our stance on not offering George Pickens.

More standouts
quote:
Quarterback
- Auburn commit Bo Nix won the MVP award and had the most consistent day among a solid quarterback group. He’s makes all the throws he’s supposed to and really sliced through some nasty wind at times on Sunday.
- Wisconsin commit Graham Mertz may have the most upside of any quarterback on hand. He’s got a quick release, didn’t struggle with the wind and can deliver strikes downfield.
- Taulia Tagovailoa, the younger brother of Alabama QB Tua, was very good through most of the afternoon and had some wow throws but his consistency suffered some as the day wore on.
- Sam Howell is one of the most highly recruited quarterbacks in the country and his touch on deep balls was probably the best on hand. He’s a stocky, athletic passer but early in the day, he looked like the best on hand.
- Zach Calzada out of Lanier HS and Cornelious Brown IV out of Calera, Ala. were two under the radar prospects that really flashed throughout the day.
Anyone seen the two under the radar guys in person?

Running back
- Atlanta local Tre Young out of Riverwood HS flashed in a big way in cat and mouse drills and as a pass-catcher. His only offer is from Appalachian State.
- While a lot of backs juke and dance in a cat and mouse drill, Daijun Edwards was the back that was making decisive, explosive realistic moves to run around and past defenders. He’s a thick, stocky back and a four-star in the class of 2020.

Wide Receiver
- The wide receiver group was loaded and at times Ramel Keyton looked like the best guy on hand. The four-star out of Marietta has a chance to be one of the top pass-catchers in this class.
- Indiana commit Emery Simmons is going to be a good one. He’s strong, runs really good routes and understands how to threaten a defensive back.
- Clemson commit Brannon Spector had some of the best testing numbers among the receivers and he was at his best on the outside and creating separation on the outside.
- Jermaine Burton won the MVP award at the WR position after running a 4.43 and winning the fastest man award.
- Tyler Fromm, the younger brother of Georgia QB Jake Fromm, was the best route-running tight end and the most consistent pass-catcher at the position.
- Georgia commit Dominick Blaylock earned an invite to The Opening Finals and looked very consistent as a thick, strong route-runner.

Offensive line
- In what may have been the best position group of the camp, LSu commit Kardell Thomas could have easily been among the top 5 on offense. He’s got the strongest and most aggressive punch, maybe in the country.
- Clay Webb earned an invite to The Opening Finals and still looks like the top center in the country. He’s so tough and extremely athletic. As he adds mass, he will be tough to deal with on the next level.
- Harry Miller wasn’t the only Buford lineman that had a good day. Expect Riley Simonds to see his profile increase after a really strong showing.

Defensive line
- Falling in line with the other elite speed rushers that were in the top five, Mohamoud Diabate out of Auburn, Ala. brought rare edge speed. He tested in the 4.5s in the 40 and has a huge ceiling.
- Top15 recruit Travon Walker looks really raw but flashed a lot of upside athleticism. He looks like he’s 240 pounds but weighed in at 265-plus.
- One of the toughest defenders to deal with on the interior was Alabama native DJ Dale. He’s not super tall but he is stout and athletic on the interior.
- Colquitt County defensive tackle Brian Merritt was also really impressive as a guy that came in under the radar but was totally dominant with his quickness and punch.

Linebacker
- Albany (Ga.) Westover linebacker Jamie Pettway really made a statement with his ability to close on the football and make plays in space. He’s got four-star upside pending film review.
- Kentucky commit KD McDaniel had some of the biggest wow plays at linebacker. He closed on the ball in a hurry and shows plus frame and athleticism. He was also violent with his hands.
- Expect Tyron Hopper to become a high priority recruit with some of the biggest programs in the southeast based on his overall frame and athleticism that he showed off on Sunday.
- 2020 product Quandarrius Robinson doesn’t have a lot of film to evaluate but his length and frame were among the most impressive among all the linebackers. He’s got outstanding athleticism and looks like a great fit in a nickel or hybrid role.

Defensive back
- Collin Duncan’s physicality at corner and his polish going through drills really flashed. He’s the younger brother of Vanderbilt wide receiver CJ Duncan and South Carolina and others are in the mix here.
- Alabama defender Christian Williams earned an invite to The Opening finals with a competitive afternoon all around. He has great ball skills and is really competitive. Few were as consistent.

Nine invited to The Opening Finals from Atlanta regional
quote:
BUFORD, Ga. - Nine were invited to The Opening Finals from Sunday's regional held at Buford High and there will be plenty more down the road as the camp in the Peach State had blue-chippers and future Power Five guys all over the field.
Five-star defensive end Nolan Smith leads the group, beginning his dominant day in testing with an insane Nike Football Rating of 141.18 which included a 4.51 laser-timed 40-yard dash, a 4.15 shuttle, 39-6 vertical leap and a 44-feet, 5-inch power ball toss. All that done in lousy weather. No defensive lineman was better in 1-on-1s.
Also headed to The Opening Finals to be held in Dallas in late June is LSU offensive guard commit Kardell Thomas, Top247 offensive lineman Clay Webb, Top247 linebacker Nakobe Dean, four-star linebacker Kalen DeLoach, Georgia's five-star receiver commits Dominick Blaylock and Jadon Haselwood, Top247 cornerback Christian Williams and cornerback Chester Kimbrough who came into the day as a three-star recruit but had the best performance in 1-on-1s of all the defensive backs.
Auburn quarterback commit Bo Nix was invited to the Elite 11 Finals to be held in June.
Alabama is the 247Sports Crystal Ball favorite for Webb who also likes Auburn, Clemson, Florida and Georgia. Dean is high on Alabama as well as Ole Miss, Mississippi, Auburn, Georgia and Stanford among others. Similar to Webb, the 247Sports Crystal Ball is all Crimson Tide for Williams. DeLoach is visiting Florida State next and is also highly interested in Clemson, Michigan, South Carolina and Alabama among others as well. Kimbrough has 20 offers including Alabama, Georgia, Michigan, Mississippi State and Texas among others.

Under Armour Orlando: Top Performers
quote:
ORLANDO, Fla -- Dozens of top prospects from the Sunshine State came together at Boone High School Sunday for the latest stop in the Under Armour All-America circuit. Under sunny skies, some of the highest-rated prospects on hand played the part while lesser-known commodities turned heads in the process.
quote:
ALPHA DOG
There wasn't much of a debate here; Tyler Davis made his great day of work look pretty easy on Sunday. The four-star Apopka (Fla.) Wekiva defensive tackle did not lose a single rep while 247Sports was keeping an eye on the linemen and he won in dominant fashion. The top 10 interior prospect looked like it with elite quickness and explosion off of the snap. He was on top of blockers well before they were ready, it seemed, before his lateral quickness took over. At times, Davis was barely touched by the opposition, and it wasn't because he was taking wide angles to the passer. He beat blockers with minimal wasted movement and got up field on routine. Miami hosted him Saturday and made a strong impression, joining Clemson and Ohio State high on his list early on.

NEXT FIVE DEFENSE
Lakeland (Fla.) Kathleen safety Brendan Gant appeared to be the top safety at the event coming in, and he was certainly it coming out of it. The four-star looks good on the hoof and can come downhill in a hurry with enough length and ball skills to make up for a lack of technical polish in space. He says he can play corner or safety at the next level, and was among the most physical--especially at the line of scrimmage--all afternoon long. Gant, who capped his afternoon with a leaping interception in half-skelly passing drills, was invited to the Under Armour All-America Game by NFL legend Deion Sanders after the event.
Fred Davis was among the most consistent cornerback prospects at the event, using his great instincts and length to affect the receivers' route. The four-star class of 2020 Jacksonville (Fla.) Trinity Christian Academy standout collected a pair of interceptions on the day and drew consistent praise from the coaching staff on hand for his hips and footwork. The in-state Miami Hurricanes are on his mind, though his next visit will be to defending champion Alabama. Davis was invited to Sanders' Prime 21 event following his performance.
Davis was the most consistent cornerback, but Fenley Graham made the most plays on the football. Another sophomore standout, the Lakeland (Fla.) prospect, picked off a handful of passes all over the field. He runs extremely well and has great leaping ability, aiding him against what was a large wide receiver group in Orlando. North Carolina and Southern Miss are on the early offer list.
Timothy Smith was another class of 2020 star to turn heads Sunday. The Sebastian (Fla.) Sebastian River defensive lineman is already a top 10 prospect at the position on 247Sports, equipped with better athleticism than one would expect ina 6-foot-4, 315-pound frame. He also comes with the sheer power and push of a classic blue-chip defensive tackle prospect possesses, with good bend and balance while making contact. Smith, who has an early Miami offer among at least a half-dozen others, was invited to Under Armour's Future 50 event following the effort.
Lakeland High was well-represented on this day, and Latrell Jean did his part on defense. The three-star defensive end beat plenty of blockers with speed and great quickness in short spaces, but he also played inside and worked well with power moves despite giving up considerable weight to nearly every opponent he faced. Jean holds several FBS scholarship offers, including, most recently, Indiana.
