Biggest Risers

Tanner McKee

McKee made the biggest jump inside the Scout 100, moving from the No. 178 player in the country to No. 29. He’s the No. 4 QB nationally and No. 2 in the region. He flashes tremendous next level upside and is only scratching the surface of how good he’ll be in a few years.

Mckee put up huge numbers as a junior and surprised many onlookers with his athleticism and ability to scramble for plus yards as a 6-6 signal caller. From a pure throwing standpoint, McKee has a quick, tight release, very live arm and can really spin the football.

He’s vey accurate to all three levels of the field, can change speeds and throws with great touch on the deeper balls. Alabama, Auburn, BYU, Florida State, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas and UCLA will all get visits this Spring.

Devon Williams

Lancaster (Calif.) Antelope Valley athlete Devon Williams made a huge jump, going from an un-ranked prospect prior to his junior season to the No. 20 player in the West and No. 81 overall in the country. He has great film and has been even more impressive in person.

We love the versatility Williams brings to the table and feel he could play 3-4 positions in college. He has made the biggest impact this off-season at receiver and has looked tremendous at every event we’ve seen him. He also projects as a high level safety or could grow in to a pass rushing outside linebacker.

At 6-5, 195 pounds, he has a long, lean athletic frame, runs well and plays with plenty of toughness. His recruitment really exploded in the winter as well with offers coming in from all over the country including programs like Alabama, Florida State, Nebraska and Notre Dame plus local schools UCLA and USC.

1. Can Georgia get all three?

Jadon Haselwood is already committed. Jashawn Sheffield was in Athens hanging out with Kirby Smart while wearing a Bulldogs jersey March 17. Dominic Blaylock quietly visited Georgia in January, and he recently helped Smart offer a close friend of his, linebacker JD Bertrand. Could three of the top skill guys in Georgia end up playing together between the hedges? Odds are in the Dawgs' favor right now to land this elite trio, and this is something we will watch closely the next 18-plus months.

There is talk questioning if all would commit at wide receiver, wondering how often they would get the ball, but at this time it looks like Georgia would love to have Haselwood on the outside at receiver, Blaylock in the slot and Sheffield on defense at safety, giving all an opportunity to make plays. There is still a long way to go, but these three are top-10 prospects in Georgia and Rivals100 talents, and all three are trending toward Georgia at this time.

2. Who will emerge in Tennessee?

When the initial rankings came out for the Class of 2019, the state of Tennessee had two of the class' top 15 players. While we’re still a few months away from releasing the numerical Rivals250, there are several candidates from the Volunteer State in the mix to be the state’s No. 1 player.

Defensive back Wesley Walker is the next elite player to come out of state powerhouse Ensworth in Nashville, and he’s joined by other 5.9 four-stars defensive tackle Trevis Hopper, wide receiver Lance Wilhoite, LSU athlete commit Maurice Hampton and lengthy defensive end Joseph Anderson. It’s a versatile group of talent in a state that continues to produce more players on a yearly basis, so the race for the top spot will be fun to watch as the cycle moves along.

We just offered Anderson today.

3. Can LSU lock down Louisiana?

The Bayou State starts the 2019 rankings cycle with one five-star in defensive tackle Ishmael Sopsher, giving it a leg up on the 2018 class, which is still waiting on its first five-star to emerge. Sospher is just the latest impressive defensive lineman to come out of the state and is already high on LSU and Alabama. The Tigers and Tide are regularly dueling over the state’s top prospects and LSU has a stated goal to lock down the state’s borders.

Other 2019 four-stars from “The Boot” include offensive lineman Kardell Thomas, who is already committed to the Tigers, wide receiver Devonta Lee, LSU defensive back commit Derek Stingley and athlete Trey Palmer. All the players have spoken highly of LSU in the past and will likely be top targets for the school, so if they can truly lock down the state, it would be a huge achievement and likely part of a great 2019 haul.

Sophser and Lee were teammates with Devonta Smith at Amite FWIW.

4. Is Bo Nix an Auburn lock?

Patrick Nix played quarterback at Auburn from 1992-1995. Will his son, Bo Nix, end up on the Plains in 2019? Many think it is already a done deal even though the quarterback is adding offers, keeping his options open and visiting other schools.

The younger Nix grew up an Auburn fan -- his first two words may have been War Eagle -- he has visited Auburn much more than he has any other school and many of those looking at his recruitment feel he may already see his name on Gus Malzahn's commitment list for 2019.

The biggest question is, could Nix go anywhere other than Auburn? He has offers from Alabama, Florida State, Miami and Ohio State, among others, so the options are there, but can he let go of that love for Auburn enough to sign those papers to attend another school? Nix is planning to take the recruiting process slow, but down deep he has that Auburn blood in him, so the Tigers will be considered the team to beat until Nix puts the pen to the paper to sign with some other school.

5. Who will be the next five-star?

The Southeast always produces at least a handful of five-star players, and despite already having three in the 2019 class, the number is surely to grow as the cycle moves along. Right now the early candidates include linebacker Owen Pappoe, the phenom who started receiving scholarship offers from SEC teams before ever playing a varsity game, as well as wide receivers like Blaylock, Sheffield and Lee.

The smart money would be on one of the region’s talented wideouts, as the trio above is joined by Arkansas prospect Treylon Burks and Florida wide receiver Maurice Goolsby as players starting out with a 6.0 Rivals Rating, just one step down from 6.1 and five-star status. Other wildcards to watch include Georgia defensive end commitment Nolan Smith, Loganville (Ga.) Grayson offensive tackle Wanya Morris and Louisville (Ky.) Trinity defensive end Stephen Herron.

Pappoe has named Alabama his leader in the past.

While the focus of most is the class of 2018 as we dive deep into the spring evaluation period, members of the class of 2019 are getting offers as well on a daily basis. Rather than rush out a Rivals100 on prospects who have played two years of high school football, we thought we’d put stars on 100 of them and release 20 a day. Here’s our final batch, led by five-star defensive tackle Ishmael Sopsher.

The prospects listed are grouped by their Rivals Rating from 6.1 to 5.9 but are in no particular order otherwise.

DT Ishmael Sopsher

Sopsher, out of Amite, La., is a bull of a defensive tackle in the mold of 2017 five-star Marvin Wilson.

“We're taking a little bit of a chance by ranking Sopsher this high this early, but with the way he's performed and continued to improve every time we've seen him both in games and in a camp setting it's a risk worth taking,” said Rivals.com Southeast Recruiting Analyst Woody Wommack. “Sopsher is a dominant interior lineman and the type of guy that the nation's top programs battle for on a yearly basis. He's already got LSU and Alabama high on his list and he will be a guy that will be household name in the recruiting world before long.”

CAN THE BIG THREE RETAIN THE TOP PRIZE?

With Patrick Surtain Jr., the No. 1-ranked prospect in the state, seemingly high on both LSU and Clemson, the streak of top prospects leaving Florida seems to be trending toward continuing into 2019.

The last time an in-state program retained the state’s top recruit was in 2014, when Florida State landed Travis Rudolph, the No. 11 overall prospect in the class. For a state with three programs that boast national championship pasts, the trend is one that logic says can’t continue for much longer.

With Florida State currently among the recruiting elite and Miami seemed poised to join the Seminoles in that group, 2019 seems to be as good a time as any to break the streak. Florida seems to be one impressive season away from joining the FSU and UM in elite recruiting waters and could also be a player by this time next year.

HOW MANY FIVE-STAR RUNNING BACKS DOES IMG HAVE?

The answer to this could legitimately be zero, one or two.

Only at IMG.

The athletes-only boarding school boasts a pair of running backs rated as high four-stars in massive Alabama commit Trey Sanders and the uncommitted Noah Cain. Both sit on the verge of five-star status and could put themselves over the top at any given moment. Sanders fits the mold of Crimson Tide running back and has everything he needs to be a legitimate star in Tuscaloosa. Cain, on the other hand, has the look of a more versatile runner capable of shining in just about any system. It will be interesting to see who rises to the top in the year ahead.

KIFFIN WATCH

Say what you will about Lane Kiffin. And maybe FAU isn’t as nationally relevant to the college football landscape as Miami, Florida or Florida State, but that doesn’t make the situation any less interesting.

By the time Signing Day 2019 rolls around, Kiffin will have had two seasons as the Owls’ head coach under his belt and there will be narrative in place. Just what that narrative will be is unknown, but the possibilities are certainly intriguing. There seems to be little chance that Kiffin in South Florida will end with anything other than an incredible redemption story or a point-and-laugh situation.

Kiffin has a brand and recruits seem to be drawn to him. How that holds up in the year to come will be fun to watch. Whatever the well-traveled head coach is, he’s rarely boring.

WHERE'S THE FIVE-STAR?

The initial Rivals100 watch list does not include a single five-star from the state of Florida. This, of course, is an upset. It’s also something that is likely to change down the road.

For now, the list of candidates capable to grabbing their final star is as follows; Sanders, Cain, Carol City running back Nayquan Wright and Dunnellon High School wide receiver Maurice Goolsby. Others will certainly emerge as candidates down the road, but if history means anything the Sunshine State will have its first five-star prospect sooner rather than later.
