Grissom snapped a 20-game losing streak with a 35-12 win over Arab last week in coach Chip English's debut. ... Columbia transfer Mel Dantzler led the way with 238 yards rushing and four touchdowns. ... The win was Grissom's first since edging Lee 13-7 in final game of the 2014 season. ... Prior to Arab, Grissom's last season-opening win came in 2010 against Lee. ... The Tigers last started 2-0 in 2009 ... Lee is coming off a 30-0 exhibition win at Scottsboro. ... The Generals beat Grissom 23-15 last season. ... Grissom leads the all-time series 26-18.

It’s Week 2 of Birmingham area high school football.

But it’s still the opening week for schools that played preseason exhibition games last week, including defending Class 6A champ Ramsay, Hewitt-Trussville and Vestavia Hills.

Who’s going to win this week?

Here’s picks from this week’s top 10 games with a little analysis, followed by picks of the remaining games on this week’s schedule (all games are Friday at 7 p.m., unless otherwise noted):

Gardendale (0-1) at James Clemens (0-0), on Thursday
Gardendale coach Matt Plunkett said it’s region-title-or-bust, but the defense struggled against the run in a season-opening loss to Muscle Shoals. The defense better be better this week if the Rockets want to avoid starting 0-2 for the first time since 2009. James Clemens 21-19

Meridian (Miss.) at Hoover (0-1)
Can the Bucs, the defending Class 7A champ, end their three-game losing skid vs. out-of-state opponents and prevent starting 0-2 for the first time since 2014? Meridian is led by defensive end Deuntra Hyman, an Ole Miss commit. Hoover 29-13

Chelsea (0-1) at Briarwood Christian (0-0)
Chelsea’s offense struggled in a season-opening loss to Oak Mountain, and Briarwood also struggled offensively in its preseason game against Vestavia Hills. The offensive line that finds success will win this one. Briarwood Christian 17-16

Mountain Brook (1-0) at Helena (0-0)
It’s no secret that Mountain Brook is going to hand the ball to SEC RB prospect Harold Joiner a lot. Can Helena slow down the big back? Probably not. Mountain Brook 38-21

Callaway (Miss.) (1-1) at Hewitt-Trussville (0-0)
Hewitt-Trussville looked awfully strong in the Champions Challenge exhibition vs. Pell City, but the Huskies take a step up in competition this week. Callaway’s roster features receiver Malik Heath, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound Mississippi State commit who is the No. 2 prospect in Mississippi according to 247sports, and 6-foot-5, 265-pound defensive end James Williams, Mississippi’s No. 6 prospect who has an Alabama offer. Hewitt-Trussville 49-33

Vestavia Hills (0-0) at Homewood (1-0)
Vestavia Hills has won 10 straight in a series that has been played every season since 1972. Make it 11 in a row for Vestavia. Vestavia Hills 21-17

Spain Park (1-0) at Muscle Shoals (1-0)
Muscle Shoals had two backs break 150 yards rushing in last week’s victory over Gardendale, with Carlos Davis rolling up 313 yards. Spain Park’s defensive front will be ready. Spain Park 22-17

Ramsay (0-0) at Pinson Valley (1-0)
Ramsay opens its state championship defense against a resurgent Pinson Valley squad that got four TD passes and a TD run from new QB Bo Nix last week. Can Ramsay slow down Nix? Pinson Valley 30-28

Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa (0-1) at Oak Mountain (1-0)
Oak Mountain held Chelsea to 100 yards of total offense, as LB Jackson Murphy had 10 tackles, four assists and a force fumble. That’s not good for a Hillcrest team that was shutout by Oxford last week. Oak Mountain 13-10

Paul Bryant (0-1) at Minor (1-0)
This game features two of the state’s top senior receivers, Paul Bryant’s Seth Williams and Minor’s DeLonte Evans. Look for big things from both, but the supporting casts will determine the outcome. Minor 34-27

Predictions for other games:

Thursday

Wenonah 27, Midfield 18
Fultondale 42, Tarrant 19

Friday

Jackson-Olin 35, Central-Tuscaloosa 14
Carver-Birmingham 38, Woodlawn 16
Clay-Chalkville 39, Bessemer City 24
Hueytown 19, Jasper 17
Shades Valley 42, Center Point 15
Cordova 21, Pleasant Grove 20
Huffman 32, Parker 31
Calera 18, Bibb County 13
Hayden 8, John Carroll 7
Leeds 17, Cleburne County 14
McAdory 50, Dallas County 34
Brookwood 24, Oak Grove 20
Mortimer Jordan 28, Pelham 25
Shelby County 20, Holt 17
Corner 14, South Lamar 10
Montevallo 31, West Blocton 24
Central-Phenix City 50, Fairfield 14
AISA, Autauga Academy 31, Bessemer Academy 21

We got off to a decent start in Week 1, going 18-5 overall.

It will only get tougher from here, however.

Region play begins Thursday and Friday for most teams in Class 6A, Region 1 and Class 7A, Region 1. Big matchups include Spanish Fort at Daphne, McGill-Toolen at Davidson and Theodore at Mary G. Montgomery.

Here are this week’s selections.

As usual, feel free to predict your own games in the comment section below and/or critique mine.

Jackson (0-0) at Clarke County (0-0) (Thursday)
Jackson has won nine straight and 11 of 12 in this series. Can Stacy Luker change that in his first year at Clarke County? Clarke County 24-20.

B.C. Rain (0-0) at Citronelle (0-0)
This is a tough test for the Red Raiders against an improving Citronelle team on the road. Citronelle 21-14.

Charles Henderson (0-0) at UMS-Wright (1-0)
Terry Curtis won his 200th game at UMS in Week 1 against Class 7A MGM. Now, it’s time to start the march to 300. UMS-Wright 28-17.

Foley (1-0) at Fairhope (0-1)
Foley has won three of the last four in this series, including the last two by a combined seven points. Something tells me Devin Mitchell and company may change that on Friday. Fairhope 21-20.

LeFlore (0-1) at Saraland (1-0)
The Rattlers threw a scare in to the Spartans a year ago at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. Coach Jeff Kelly will make sure that doesn’t happen two years in a row. Saraland 28-14.

McGill-Toolen (1-0) at Davidson (0-1) (Ladd)
New coach. New players. No problem. McGill-Toolen won its 16th regular season game in a row last week at Spanish Fort. Jackets will run that streak to 17 at Ladd on Friday. McGill-Toolen 24-10.

Spanish Fort (0-1) at Daphne (1-0)
It’s really early in the season for these two Eastern Shore rivals to play. Expect both to be strong championship contenders by Week 10. For now, I’ll take the home team in a tight, emotional one. Daphne 14-12.

St. Stanislaus (Miss.) (1-0) at St. Paul’s (1-0)
Reginald Bracy and St. Paul’s notched a tough road win at Class 7A Fairhope last week. Now they seek a little revenge against a team that beat them last year. St. Paul’s 30-17.

Theodore (1-0) at Mary G. Montgomery (0-1)
The Bobcats seem to be on the verge of one of their better seasons. MGM appears to be rebuilding a bit with new coach Chris Wilson. Theodore 34-14.

Vigor (0-1) at Baker (1-0)
Few teams have a tougher opening schedule than the Wolves, who lost to Blount on the road last week and now must travel to the Hornet’s nest. Baker 27-13.

OTHER PICKS

Murphy 28, Alma Bryant 10
Washington County 17, Millry 14
Baldwin County 28, Gulf Shores 21
Bayside Academy 17, Faith Academy 10
Flomaton 41, Billingsley 21
J.U. Blacksher 30, Florala 17
Pleasant Home 31, Fruitdale 18
Leroy 21, Satsuma 20
Blount 31, Robertsdale 19
W.S. Neal 21, Tallassee 16
Thomasville 24, Sweet Water 10
T.R. Miller 28, Opp 24
Escambia County 31, Wilcox Central 13

Boyette's picks

Last week: 6-4

This week's games:

Westminster Christian (1-0) at Brewer (1-0): Brewer safety Zach Kodra said before the season that his team could "most definitely" surprise opponents.

It didn't take long for Kodra's prognostication to be fulfilled. He recovered a fumble for a touchdown as the Patriots opened the season with a 24-18 win over Randolph, a 2016 playoff qualifier. Brewer, which went 3-7 last year after a winless showing in 2015, lost 28-2 to the Raiders last season

Now Brewer has the opportunity to experience something unknown to the program this century: A 2-0 start. The Patriots last opened with consecutive victories in 1999, which was the last season that the program had a winning record (7-4) or went of the playoffs.

The pick: Brewer 27-24

Austin (1-0) at Bob Jones (0-1)
The Patriots continue a brutal stretch with the second of three straight top-10 opponents. Austin 21-14

Etowah (1-0) at Madison County (0-0)
The Blue Devils held Madison County to a season-low 10 points last year. Etowah 20-17

Hazel Green (0-0) at Buckhorn (0-0)
There's new quarterbacks and lots of questions for both teams. Hazel Green 13-12

Athens (0-0) at Sparkman (0-0)
Coach Laron White makes his highly anticipated debut leading the Senators. Sparkman 35-31

Tanner (1-0) at Mae Jemison (1-0)
The Jaguars turned heads with their road win over Calera. Mae Jemison 30-21

Decatur (0-0) at Huntsville (0-0)
The Red Raiders aim to spoil Panthers coach Mark Fleetwood's debut. Decatur 20-13

Gardendale (1-0) at James Clemens (0-0), Thurs.
The Jets look to avoid stumbling out of the gate with an 0-2 start like in 2016. James Clemens 24-21

Lee-Huntsville (0-0) vs. Grissom (1-0), Thurs.
Prior to last week's win over Arab, Grissom's most recent victory was in 2014 against the Generals. Lee 27-24

East Limestone (0-0) at West Limestone (0-1), Thurs.
The Wildcats haven't won three straight in this rivalry since 1992-94. West Limestone 23-20

Micah Parsons will visit Tide once again in fall

Micah Parsons, a 5-star weakside defensive end from Harrisburg (Penn.) High School, visited Tuscaloosa for the first time back in July. He spent three days on Alabama’s campus. He’s planning on spending another 48 hours in Tuscaloosa at some point this fall, too.

Parsons, the nation’s No. 1 weakside defensive end in the 2018 class according to 247Sports composite rankings, told Land of 10’s Penn State recruiting reporter Tyler Donohue that Alabama, Nebraska and Ohio State are three schools that definitely will receive official visits from him this fall. He’ll visit Nebraska on Oct. 7 and Ohio State on Oct. 21. The Alabama visit isn’t set just yet. But, if he’s visiting Ohio State on Oct. 21, that means he won’t be able to attend Alabama’s game against Tennessee that day, which will be a big recruiting weekend for the Tide.

More importantly, Parsons is now planning on early enrolling at the school of his choice, which is something that wasn’t planned as of last month when I talked to him in Oregon at The Opening.

“It’s big because I can get used to the offseason program, do spring ball with the team and know where I’m at physically,” Parsons explained. “I’m in all my classes. I just need to keep my grades where they need to be, stay focused and I’ll be able to enroll early.”

There’s no doubt that the U.S. Army All-American is one of the most special players in the 2018 recruiting class. He’s one of the few recruits in America where you can line him up at running back, wide receiver, tight end, on the defensive line and at linebacker, and he could be a star at any of those positions. He’s even his team’s punter.

Penn State commit Shaquon Anderson-Butts, and one of Parsons’ best friends, seems to know where the 5-star recruit is going.

“I don’t want to spoil anything, but he’s coming to Penn State,” Anderson-Butts said. “It’s his mom’s favorite school and he wants to stay close to his mom. Another thing he takes personally is he wants to do it for his state.”

Parsons was committed to the Nittany Lions before de-committing from Penn State in April. It’s very rare that a recruit chooses to go back to the school he was once committed to, but I can see it in Parsons’ case. The thought right now is that he’s a lock to attend Ohio State, but one source close to the Buckeyes program doesn’t think that’s the case.

Alabama thinks it’s in the race for Parsons, but I still think Ohio State and Nebraska are in better position for him as of this time. Other Jack linebacker targets to keep an eye on for Alabama? Eyabi Anoma, KJ Henry, Adam Anderson and Andres Fox. The Tide already have two commits who could play Jack, too, in Jordan Davis and Cameron Latu.

He'll probably be in town for the LSU game like every other big name player in the country.

Patrick Surtain Jr. cutting his list soon

Patrick Surtain Jr., the nation’s No. 1 cornerback out of American Heritage High School (Plantation, Fla.), tweeted on Monday that he’s planning on cutting his list of offers down to a top 6. Alabama should make the cut, along with Florida State, LSU and Ohio State. Those four schools have been the biggest players for Surtain in his recruitment.

The 5-star prospect has long maintained that LSU is the favorite to land him, but there’s some thought on Alabama’s side that it has a chance to sell early playing time to Surtain. Alabama desperately needs cornerbacks in this class after not signing any in the 2017 class.

Jaycee Horn keeping his recruitment open

Tennessee received a big commitment from cornerback Jaycee Horn last Thursday, exclusively with SEC Country.

Should Vols fans be alarmed with Horn not shutting down his recruitment despite the commitment?

“I’m going to take all my official visits,” Horn said. “I’m not going to shut down completely, I’m still going to take my visits. I am going to be at Tennessee, though.”

Horn’s commitment was hard to predict because he swayed between three SEC schools toward the end. Horn had cut Tennessee out of his top two in favor of Alabama and South Carolina, but the Vols worked their way back in.

Coach Butch Jones being able to turn the tide in Horn’s recruitment might go down as one of his best recruiting feats. The tireless work paid off when it looked like there was no light at the end of the tunnel for the Vols.

Tennessee isn’t out of the woods, obviously, because Horn isn’t shutting it down.

The 6-foot, 170-pound corner from Alpharetta, Ga., will listen to pitches from other schools a few more times before National Signing Day.

Alabama might be the biggest threat. Horn said he felt “wanted” by the Vols and that’s why he chose Orange and White.

The Crimson Tide pulled off Horn recently in favor of other options. SEC Country’s Chris Kirschner predicts Alabama will take four cornerbacks in the Class of 2018. If one of those projected commits chooses another school, Horn could come into play once again for the Crimson Tide.

South Carolina might seem out of it, but if Horn visits Columbia I wouldn’t rule out the Gamecocks, either. Horn visited Alabama and Tennessee at the end of July, but he didn’t take a trip to South Carolina.

If Horn takes an official to South Carolina this fall, expect its coaching staff to throw a last-ditch effort into flipping Horn.

Prediction

I believe Horn will end up with the Vols. He wants to feel wanted and have a chance to compete for playing time right away. Tennessee offers both to Horn. Alabama’s cornerback recruiting will be worth monitoring, though.

Horn gives Tennessee’s recruiting class three blue-chip prospects with the other two being safeties Brendon Harris and Trey Dean. Harris won’t look anywhere else, but Dean was a surprise commitment and could lean elsewhere.

Expect the Vols to do everything within their power to hold on to Horn’s commitment.

Coynis Miller, 4-star defensive tackle, Jackson-Olin High (Birmingham, Ala.)

The skinny: This month the 4-star lineman surprised many when he named Florida his leader over Auburn. Alabama is also in the mix, but this will likely be a battle between the Gators and Tigers. It’s hard to pull elite recruits out of Alabama, but the Gators have done it four times in the last two recruiting cycles and Miller has legitimate interest in Florida. He plans to decide some time during his senior season.

SEC East Champ: Georgia. Not an easy call between Georgia and Florida, but I am going with the Dawgs because of their 1-2 punch at running back, expected improvement from quarterback Jacob Eason and a defense that will be solid. The Florida quarterback question mark and lack of offensive production scares me off from picking them.

SEC West Champ: Alabama. I’m not going against the grain here. Even if Florida State upsets the Crimson Tide in week one, Nick Saban's team can rebound and win the SEC. Quarterback Jalen Hurts will have a tougher time this season as teams figure him out, but the depth at numerous positions is ridiculous as usual and some elite playmakers who have been waiting for their chance will emerge. Auburn gives them a run for their money, but I’ll stick with ‘Bama.

SEC Champion: Alabama. Another SEC title game drubbing based on what I can tell.

Coach of the Year: Kirby Smart, Georgia. Saban won it last year, so they won’t give it to him again, I don’t see a team surprising enough to have their coach steal it away and for Georgia to win the SEC East in year two under Smart is impressive enough for him to earn it.

Hot Seat City: Kevin Sumlin, Texas A&M. Sumlin could be gone by mid-season if things don’t start well for the Aggies. If he doesn’t win the SEC West or at least make an amazing push for it, it’s clear his head is on the chopping block. There are others – Butch Jones, Gus Malzahn, Bret Bielema – who have to avoid disastrous seasons to stay off the list as well.

Biggest Surprise: Missouri. The Tigers are projected to finish last in the East but I can see them pushing towards the middle. Another step forward by quarterback Drew Lock, another strong season by Damarea Crockett and some depth at wide receiver will help the offense. The defense needs to improve, especially tackling and staying healthy, and if it can I could see them jumping past Vanderbilt, Kentucky and maybe even South Carolina.

Biggest Disappointment: LSU. The roster has a ton of talent. My offensive MVP and best NFL Draft prospect are both from LSU, but it all comes down to quarterback play again and I’m not sold on Danny Etling. I am a big fan of new offensive coordinator Matt Canada and I think in a year or so the offense will be more balanced, but this year they finish third in the SEC West and that’s a disappointment for first-year head coach Ed Orgeron.

As Expected: Arkansas. I expect Arkansas to look like world beaters in a few games, pull an upset or two and lose badly to a few teams and keep everyone scratching their heads. That’s the way it’s been under Bielema as everyone is expecting him to break through, but it will be more of the same this season.

A Year Away: Texas A&M. What? Sumlin will likely be fired, so who knows what will come of recruiting for 2018 and 2019 until they find a new coach. But the roster talent is there, it has an elite quarterback in Kellen Mond to build around and it will make a huge splash with the new hire. If there is a sleeping giant in the SEC West, it’s A&M with a big-time coach.

Building for the Future: Georgia. Alabama would be the easy answer here as we all know they will likely finish in the top five in recruiting for 2018 and possibly finish on top. But Georgia is right behind them with a 3.75 average star ranking and it is recruiting better locally now that at the start of the cycle. If a team from the East is going to unseat Alabama, Georgia is the most likely team to do so down the line.

Conference Offensive MVP: Derrius Guice, LSU. The drop off from Leonard Fournette to Guice is not a big one and in a run-heavy offense, he could approach 2,000 yards this season if he stays healthy. LSU is my pick for disappointment, but Guice is not part of that.

Conference Defensive MVP: Minkah Fitzpatrick, Alabama. Fitzpatrick is always around the football, he’s gotten better in coverage each year and he’s now a defensive leader for a team pushing for another national title. This kid has always been special, but I never expected him to be this elite this early.

Best NFL Prospect: Arden Key, LSU. A shoulder injury could cost him a game or two this season, but if he has the season many expect, he will be that hybrid guy that goes in the top 10 of the NFL Draft every year. That is assuming the shoulder injury doesn’t drop him a bit in the eyes of scouts.

True Freshman of the Year: Jerry Jeudy, Alabama. He was dominant in the spring, he’s showing the ball skills of an NFL player and he could be the next in line from Florida, joining Amari Cooper and Calvin Ridley as absolute stars at Alabama.

Breakout Player: Derrick Brown, Auburn. Brown showed flashes last season playing mostly out of position and with Montravius Adams off to the NFL, he can now see more playing time inside and begin to be the dominant tackle in the middle. Jarrett Stidham is obviously another candidate on the team and players like LSU linebacker Devin White and Ole Miss quarterback Shea Patterson could also be considered.

3. COLLEGE FOOTBALL'S MOST INDISPENSABLE PLAYERS

This weekend, while looking ahead to the Alabama-Florida State matchup, I began thinking about the players who are most important to their team’s success. For example, Dalvin Cook would have led the way for me last season as he was so integral to the ‘Noles offensive success. This year, Derwin James is that guy for the Seminoles because of how much ground he covers and how effective he can be close to the line of scrimmage. Here are five other guys, non-quarterbacks, that national title contenders can’t afford to lose.

Saquon Barkley, Penn State – Miles Sanders is really good, I mean really, really good. But Barkley is the ultimate difference-maker for the Nittany Lions and allows quarterback Trace McSorley extra room in the middle of the field as defenses need to crowd the line to stop Barkley. Without Barkley, Penn State would be in trouble like FSU would be without Cook the last couple of years.

Minkah Fitzpatrick, Alabama – Fitzpatrick is now the leader of the defense and similar to James in covering so much ground. He has the ability to cover outside or work the middle of the field. He doesn’t play as well close to the line of scrimmage, but he’s better as a corner. He’s a huge key to the Alabama defense.

Christian Wilkins, Clemson – Wilkins started his career inside, moved outside and is now back inside. His versatility is amazing. You can line him up anywhere. He has to be accounted for on every play and he even impacts on offense. He’s a freaky athlete who makes the defense go.

Derrius Guice, LSU – Arden Key could go here as well, but without Guice at running back, LSU has no chance to win the West and pull off the upset of Alabama. He’s right up there with Barkley when it comes to dominant backs in college football this season.

Vita Vea, Washington – The man in the middle sets the tone for Washington against the run and crushes the pocket. The athletic linebackers run a lot more free when Vea is doing his thing.

Take Two returns with a daily offering tackling a handful of issues in the college football landscape. Rivals.com National Recruiting Analyst Adam Gorney lays out the situation and then receives takes from Rivals.com National Recruiting Director Mike Farrell and a local expert from the Rivals.com network of team sites.

STORYLINE

The recruitment of Patrick Surtain is one of the more compelling stories this cycle because not only is he a five-star prospect, the best cornerback in this class and No. 3 overall in the rankings, but Surtain does not ever say a whole lot.

There are some things we know about Surtain’s recruitment: The Plantation (Fla.) American Heritage standout is high on LSU and Florida State and those two programs could be considered frontrunners.

The Tigers might even have an edge because of Surtain’s relationship with coach Ed Orgeron and defensive backs coach Corey Raymond. That could go a long way as Surtain moves toward a decision.

But what happens if LSU fizzles this season? That probably plays right into the hands of Florida State. The Seminoles are one of Surtain’s top teams as well. A win over Alabama to start the season could open some eyes. LSU struggling could do the same.

Clemson has an outside shot, Ohio State is a possibility, Alabama might be in the mix and then some other schools are hanging on.

Surtain’s recruitment is unpredictable because he wants to take visits and just doesn’t open up much about his recruitment. Is a surprise in store or will Surtain be the next top cornerback to head to DBU – and that means going to Baton Rouge.

FIRST TAKE: Rob Cassidy, Rivals.com

"This is tough because Surtain is a cyborg built to play cornerback and not say anything revealing. LSU holds an edge. That's not a secret. Then, I could see a situation where the Tigers underperform this year and that pushes him toward Florida State. LSU fans won't like to hear that but it's certainly a possibility. That said, I'll stick with LSU for now. Keep in kind, however, if a 6-6 or 7-5 season happens in Baton Rouge, I'll want to switch my pick to the Seminoles." - Cassidy

SECOND TAKE: Mike Farrell, Rivals.com

“A lot of people think LSU. It wouldn’t surprise me if it’s LSU. I would give Florida State a pretty good chance here as I do with Alabama. Clemson is in the mix as well. Most people are thinking LSU and then you hear mentions of Alabama and Florida State. Defensive back tradition and getting to the pros are the things he’s all about. It’s going to depend how the season goes at LSU. If they have a really bad season with Orgeron and people start whispering that they made the wrong choice then that could push him away. Barring that, I’m saying LSU for him.” - Farrell

Myles Mason could commit any time now.

The 6-foot-2, 185 pound safety out of Trussville (Ala.) Hewitt-Trussville has wanted to commit before, but he hasn't felt ready. Five schools are still in the mix and a decision is nearing for Mason.

"I am pretty close to committing," said Mason. "I am taking it day to day right now. I know it is on my mind, I know I am close and as soon as I feel 100-percent about a school, I will be committing to it.

"Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida State and LSU are the schools I am still considering and it could be any one of them. All five are about the same. No school has really pulled ahead yet. As soon as it does, I will commit.

"I am really working to get to that point."

When asked about the five finalists, many of the answers were about the same. They were centered around the coaches, the trust and how he fits into the program.

Mason likes how those schools have kept it "real" with him and recruited him over time. The facilities caught his attention at Clemson, he mentioned how LSU is 'DBU' and the feeling he has when in Tuscaloosa (Ala.), but all in all, he said about the same things about each school with just different coach's names inserted.

He now is waiting for that moment he feels that school is right for him.

"It is just going to be a feeling that I have one day," said Mason. "I have been praying about it and I hope to wake up one day soon with that feeling about a school.

"I really want to get it over with, so I think it happens soon. I want to focus on school, focus on the season and leave recruiting to the side.

"I could commit tomorrow. I could commit next week. I do not know when it will be, but I feel it will definitely be soon."

Rivals100 DB Tyson Campbell knows four that will make top five

quote:

With Plantation (Fla.) American Heritage's season under way, Rivals100 defensive back Tyson Campbell is trying to keep his focus on the field by narrowing his focus off it.

IN HIS OWN WORDS…

"Right now I'm trying to cut down to a short list so I can just focus on them," Campbell said. "Other than that it's really focusing on the season and probably make a decision after the season.

"I plan on making a top five in a couple weeks.," he said. "After that I'll probably cut into three and those will be my three finalists. Miami, Alabama, Ohio State, and Georgia will make my cut.

"At Alabama, coach Saban and coach Ansley and I talk on an almost daily basis," said Campbell. "I talked to coach Saban pretty recently and I feel like their situation being pretty low on defensive backs is pretty good for me. With my size, I feel like I can really produce at the University of Alabama.

"It would be great just stay at home and play at Miami in front of my parents," he said. "I know the coaches well over there. Coach Rumph used to coach me so I have a really great relationship with him. Sometimes I feel like it would be great to play near home and sometimes I feel like I would want to get away. So that's what my decision will come down to.

"The relationship I have with coach Tucker, coach Smart, and coach Coley at Georgia is great," Campbell said. "Ever since I took to visit they really made it clear that they want me. They're one of the schools offer me. It was during my sophomore year. That was something I really pay attention to.

"Ohio State is a great school," he said. "Coach Coombs, with the defensive backs that he's producing and the three-years-and-out and potentially being a first-rounder, that's something I could see myself doing. I could graduate with my degree in three years, if my grades are right, and potentially be a first round pick.

"I'm thinking about a December decision," said Campbell. "It could be at an all-star game but I'm not sure about that. I might want to do it my own way."

RIVALS' REACTION

Campbell is a phenomenal prospect and it is very clear why some of the nation's top programs have made him a priority. With these four schools set to make his top five, Clemson, Florida, and Florida State will have to kick it up a notch to stay in the race. It's hard to peg a favorite here and Campbell maintains his recruitment is still open. Expect official visits to play a big factor here.

Top six coming for 5-star Patrick Surtain Jr.

quote:

Five-star cornerback Patrick Surtain Jr. didn't play when Plantation (Fla.) American Heritage traveled to Virginia to play Virginia Beach (Va.) Bishop Sullivan because of slight knee injury. A sprained MCL certainly won't discourage the long list of suitors vying for his commitment.

IN HIS OWN WORDS…

"I'm feeling OK," Surtain Jr. said. "I'm just rehabbing my knee and seeing how it gets better throughout the year.

"Right now I'm standing close to the end of my recruitment," he said. "I'm planning on dropping my top choices of schools soon hopefully that will help me make my commitment from there.

"It'll probably be a top six," said Surtain Jr. "LSU, Alabama, Ohio State, and Florida State will make my top six. I haven't planned my official visits yet but those four will get visits."

RIVALS' REACTION

Surtain Jr. has done a good job of not showing his cards too much throughout his recruitment. LSU and Florida State have long been the favorites here but Ohio State and Alabama a very much in the race. With those four set to make his short list and get official visits, Clemson, Florida, and Miami will be fighting to remain in contention as Surtain Jr. nears the end of his recruitment.
