Callaway is a division rival to my alma mater. They are a Jackson Public School so they are pretty terrible.

Jackson caught five passes for 150 yards last week. … Hoover is the defending Class 7A champ. … Meridian was off last week, but opened the season with a 34-25 loss to Olive Branch (Miss.) on Aug. 18. … The teams have never played. … Hoover fell from No. 1 to No. 2 in this week’s Power 25 rankings.
Meridian isn't very good this year if they lost to Olive Branch.

The skinny: This is the 102nd meeting between Jackson and Clarke County, according to the Alabama High School Football Historical Society. The Aggies have dominated lately, winning nine in a row and 11 of 12 overall. Danny Powell is 6-0 as Jackson’s coach against the Bulldogs. His teams have outscored Clarke County 210-50. It’s the season opener for both teams after jamboree games a week ago. Jackson played Leroy, while Clarke County played Sweet Water. Powell and Clarke County head coach Stacy Luker have combined for 10 AHSAA state championships. Powell won four at Leroy and one at Jackson. Luker won all five of his at Sweet Water. Christian Cooper returns at quarterback for the Aggies. The front lines are anchored by senior Jalem King on both sides. Linebacker A.J. Sellers is a key on defense. … Senior Ray Horn will take the snaps at quarterback for the Bulldogs. Linebacker Quentin Morris anchors the defense. Junior Javon Ivory will play a key role on both sides of the ball.

The skinny: B.C. Rain has an 11-9 edge in this series, but the two teams haven’t played since 2007. Citronelle won that game 28-0. … The Class 5A Wildcats seem to be headed in the right direction after making the playoffs for the first time since 2008 last season. B.C. Rain narrowly missed the playoffs last season in its first year in Class 6A. A loss to Saraland in the regular-season finale kept the Red Raiders out of the postseason. … The Wildcats must replaces several key players from last year’s playoff run, including QB Ryan Bruner and LB Justin Roberts. However, third-year coach Rusty Funk feels good about the potential of his team. Citronelle returns eight starters on defense and five on offense and the size of Funk’s roster has increased dramatically. … B.C. Rain has some key players returning as well. Cliff Powell is entering his third year as the starter at QB, and Nicholas Safford will lineup at several different positions on the field. Sophomore noseguard Carlos Johnson Jr. is looking to build on an impressive freshman season.

The skinny: This game has meant heartbreak for the Pirates each of the last two years. The Lions won 30-27 two years ago and 17-13 last season. They’ve won three of the last four in the series overall, including a second-round playoff meeting in 2014. … Foley opened last week with a 29-12 win over Robertsdale in a game that had to be finished on Saturday due to a lighting issue. Senior Chris Armstrong was the key man, rushing for 119 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries on offense and finishing with seven tackles on defense. He also ran a blocked field goal back 97 yards for a TD, but that was called back. …. Fairhope lost a tough opener at home against St. Paul’s, fumbling in the final minute of a 24-21 setback. However, the Pirates showed considerable promise coming off last year’s 2-8 season. QB Devin Mitchell and RB Michael Colclasure combined for 371 yards and Wes Baumhower led the defensive effort.

The skinny: The Bobcats have won the last two games in this series by a combined margin of 83-27, including last year’s 41-20 win at Theodore. … Theodore got off to a good start this year, beating Northridge 32-13. Senior QB Trevor Andrews played a part in all five Bobcat scores, running for two touchdowns and throwing for three more. He was 10-of-15 through the air for 182 yards. He also ran for 131 yards. Hunter Tillman caught six passes for 82 yards and a score. … First-year MGM coach Chris Wilson didn’t fare quite as well in his opening game with the Vikings, who lost to Class 4A power UMS-Wright 35-6 at home. The Vikings were held to 40 yards of offense and two first downs in the first three quarters. MGM had three turnovers in the game. QB Jacoby Daniel and RB Joshua Martin are threats in the backfield, but the Vikings are young on defense – starting six sophomores.

The skinny: This is a huge early test between these two Eastern Shore rivals to open Class 6A, Region 1 play. Spanish Fort is 4-1 against the Trojans, having outscored them 100-58 overall. Daphne’s only win in the series was a 7-0 victory in 2014. The Toros won last year’s game 26-7 On the Hill. … Daphne opened the 2017 season with a 3-0 win over Class 7A Davidson at Ladd-Peebles Stadium last week. The Trojans overcame 115 yards of penalties to avenge a loss to the Warriors last season. Diego Guajardo’s 22-yard field goal was the difference. The Trojan defense limited Davidson to just four first downs – three by penalty – and 25 yards of total offense on 38 plays. … For the second straight year, Spanish Fort opened with a loss to Class 7A McGill-Toolen. The Yellow Jackets took a 27-13 lead midway through the fourth quarter and held on for a 27-20 win. Three Spanish Fort turnovers proved to be a big difference. The Toros also played most of the second half without star sophomore Kris Abrams-Draine, who was sidelined with cramps. With Abrams-Draine out of the lineup, Conner Hegan carried the load, rushing for 110 yards on 23 carries. He also had a receiving TD. ... The game will be televised by WJTC-UTV 44.

Man the talent in the Gulf Coast region must be way down this year. I don't recognize one name in the 5 games they highlighted.
