After Leatherwood's early commitment to Alabama in June of 2015, Florida State appeared like it would be the top competition to hold onto the nation's top offensive tackle. In the end it was Florida that gave the Tide the most trouble in working to keep Leatherwood in the class.

It appeared Alabama's race to lose after Lewis backed off his Ohio State pledge in early August 2015. Florida State, however, was among the finalists, and got Lewis on campus for an official visit in December.

Though he ultimately ended up transferring out of the program last year ending up at Ohio State, Sheffield originally chose Alabama over a group of programs that included Florida State. The five-star corner officially visited Tallahassee in October of 2014 before committing to Alabama in early January.
