The list of top 25 high school defensive backs in the last 25 years is a versatile group, many of whom went on to be college stars and later NFL players.
This summer, AL.com has been counting down the top 25 players at each position in the last quarter of a century. So far, we’ve named the top running backs, quarterbacks, linemen and linebackers. Today, it’s time to count down the top secondary players, and it was no easy task.
We formed a knowledgeable committee that came up with an original list of 50 names based on statistics, honors, film study, level of play and first-hand knowledge. That list was then narrowed to a top 25.
We left a lot of great names on the cutting room floor, so to speak. Feel free to make the case for your favorite player in the comment section below and check back each week for our continuing series.

Welcome to SEC Country’s daily Roll Tide-ings, a rundown of everything happening in Alabama Crimson Tide recruiting with Chris Kirschner. After a busy 10 days, we talk the latest with who could potentially commit to Alabama next.

Predicting the next commitments for Alabama
Alabama picked up three 2018 commitments in the last 10 days in Slade Bolden, Jarrett Bell and Cameron Latu. Those commitments were expected for the Crimson Tide, but the question from fans to me immediately started pouring in my direct messages on Twitter. Who’s next?
Well, let’s get to that question now.

quote:
Asa Martin, 4-star RB, Decatur, Ala.
Martin will announce his commitment on Aug. 24 during a ceremony at his school. His finalists are Alabama, Auburn, Clemson and Florida. The in-state prospect is the Crimson Tide’s top target at the position now that 5-star running back Zamir White committed to Georgia. Since Martin was offered by Alabama in April, this recruitment has trended the Tide’s way. I expect Alabama to be the choice in 10 days. If Martin doesn’t choose the Tide, I don’t think the team will land a commitment at running back in the 2018 class.

quote:
Vernon Jackson, 3-star ATH, Boling, Texas
Jackson will announce his commitment two days after Martin, on Aug. 26. As with Martin, I expect Jackson to pick Alabama. This recruitment is a two-team race between the Tide and Texas A&M. Jackson visited Tuscaloosa last month for the first time, stayed for three days, and became familiar with the campus and coaching staff. Though 247Sports rates him a 3-star prospect, the staff is very high on Jackson’s athleticism and versatility. He plays quarterback in high school but is being recruited as an inside linebacker by Alabama. Jackson is so versatile that schools are recruiting him at quarterback, running back, defensive end and linebacker. It would be a big surprise if he chose anywhere other than Alabama.

Penei Sewell, 4-star OL, Saint George, Utah
SEC Country spoke with Sewell’s father, Gabriel, last week. He said he believes there’s a 75 percent chance his son commits before the month is over. If that’s the case, there are two options: Alabama and Oregon. I think the Crimson Tide are in good shape to land Sewell’s commitment because every time I’ve spoken to him or his father, they have said the ultimate goal is getting to the NFL and the final choice will be the school that puts him in the best situation to get there. There’s no doubt that Alabama has had more success at getting offensive linemen to the NFL than Oregon.
