5. Jarren Williams

Kentucky commit Jarren Williams is not flashy, but he was effective on Friday throwing accurate and catchable balls. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound is sound in his drops and ball fakes while having a clean delivery as well.

4. Trevor Lawrence

Clemson commit Trevor Lawrence was accurate with nearly all of his throws. While he might not have had as many ‘wow’ throws as other ranked ahead of him, he did give a brief glimpse into what has him ranked as the nation’s No. 1 overall quarterback with a beautiful corner route and impressive cover-2 hole shot.

3. Matt Corral

USC commit Matt Corral spins the ball with great velocity. On Friday, the 6-foot-2, 195-pound prospect displayed one of the strongest arms in the camp. Corral got coaches excited when he rip a pass into the hole of cover-2 at the end of the camp, a throw he can make with ease due to that arm strength.

2. Justin Fields

Penn State commit Justin Fields looked fairly pedestrian working on the short to intermediate routes early in the camp. It’s not that the 6-foot-2, 220-pound prospect looked bad, he simply wasn’t separating from the pack really. When asked to drive the ball down the field, Fields separated from the pack quickly with dime after dime on fades and corner routes. While other quarterbacks struggled, Fields appeared to thrive stretching the field vertically.

1. Emory Jones

From start the finish, Ohio State quarterback Emory Jones impressed the most of all the quarterbacks in the camp. The threw crisp, accurate balls on the short to intermediate routes, and then unleashed some beautiful passes down the field. This was top-notch performance from the Peach State native.

Welcome to SEC Country’s daily Roll Tide-ings, a rundown of everything happening in Alabama Crimson Tide recruiting with Chris Kirschner. In this edition, we discuss the latest with two talented 2019 prospects: Trey Knox and Trikweze Bridges.

Trey Knox headed to Alabama this weekend to earn offer

SNELLVILLE, Ga. — Trey Knox is one of the nation’s top recruits in the Class of 2019, so much so that he says the Alabama coaching staff has already compared him to a Crimson Tide legend.

Knox, a 4-star wide receiver from Blackman High School (Murfreesboro, Tenn.), was in Tuscaloosa this past March. What Alabama told him on that trip has stuck with him until this day.

“When I went down there for a visit, they actually compared me to Julio (Jones),” Knox told SEC Country. “That’s pretty big, obviously. I can see myself fitting in Alabama’s offense. I was there for a practice, and they share the sugar with the receivers. They throw the ball around and everyone gets touches.”

The nation’s No. 21 wide receiver in the Class of 2019 (per 247Sports) will return this weekend to Alabama, where he hopes to earn a scholarship offer. It would not be a surprise to see him earn one. He’s one of Ohio State’s and Florida’s top targets.

Knox says he’s been communicating with the Crimson Tide on a regular basis and understands that Alabama places a big emphasis on camp performance in Tuscaloosa before offering some recruits.

“They want me to go there to camp because that’s obviously how they do things there,” Knox said. “They’ve been telling me that if I come and do what I do on film, then I should leave there with an offer.”

At the Cam Newton 7-on-7 tournament earlier this week, Knox was sporting Ohio State gloves — the Buckeyes have been considered the team to beat. He’s come out and said he thinks his recruitment could come down to Ohio State and Florida, the school he rooted for growing up. His trainer, former Florida wide receiver Lorenzo Spikes, has also been in his ear about committing to the Gators.

“Obviously, he wants me to go there,” Knox said. “It’s his alma mater. He thinks he can see [me] prospering there and going to the NFL.

“I grew up a Florida fan. Seeing [Tim] Tebow and all of those guys win national championships caught my eye. I talk to coach [Jim] McElwain quite a bit. We have a strong relationship.”

If any team could put a wrench between those two schools, it’s Alabama. Knox acknowledged that if Alabama offered, it would be near the top of his favorite schools list.

“They’re a top 5 program every single year,” Knox said. “It doesn’t get much bigger than Alabama.”

Expect Knox to make a commitment somewhere in the time range following his junior season and before his senior season begins.

Asa Martin sets commitment date

Aug. 24 could be a very good day for Alabama.

Asa Martin, a 4-star running back from Austin High School (Decatur, Ala.), released his top 3 schools on Thursday. Alabama, Auburn and Florida are his final three schools. The Crimson Tide, according to multiple sources, are in the best position to land Martin as of Friday.

Offensive coordinator Brian Daboll saw Martin twice this spring and was in attendance for the running back’s impressive performance during his spring game, where he rushed 8 times for 99 yards and 1 touchdown and added a 67-yard receiving touchdown.

When SEC Country visited with the in-state prospect in April, Florida was his leader and Auburn was in second place. Before he was offered by the Crimson Tide at A-Day, he told us that he felt like he wasn’t a good fit for Alabama’s offense.

“I just don’t really know. … I just don’t think it really fits my style very much,” Martin told SEC Country at the time. “The style of running back I am, I don’t really feel like I fit into that style of offense.

“I’m more like of an open-type, shotgun offense. Spread style.”

He has since changed his stance after further evaluation. It should be noted, too, that the coaching staff believes he could also play on the defensive side of the ball.

“I went down there and Coach Daboll showed me a bunch of new stuff he installed and I could potentially play defense if I went to Alabama,” Martin said.

Martin will be in Tuscaloosa early next week.

Greg Emerson has Alabama in his top 6

Greg Emerson is one of the most impressive players I’ve seen in person the past couple of months. SEC Country saw him in two camps this spring where he dominated future SEC offensive linemen with ease.

Emerson, a 4-star defensive tackle from North Side High School (Jackson, Tenn.), released his top 6 schools on Thursday and Alabama made the cut. Clemson, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Oregon and Tennessee are the other five schools in the mix.

He told SEC Country two months ago why he’s high on the Crimson Tide.

“Alabama is a good school. They’re definitely up there,” Emerson said. “I’ve liked that program since I was a kid. They got a pretty tough program and I’m willing to be a part of a tough program.”

Getting several interior defensive linemen is a big priority for Alabama in the Class of 2018, and Emerson is one of the team’s top targets along with Coynis Miller and Jalen Cunningham. The Tide only signed one true defensive tackle in the Class of 2017 in 4-star prospect Phidarian Mathis.

“They have a tough program and have a lot of great competitors,” Emerson said. “There’s obviously a lot of good players there, but you never know if you’ll start as a freshman because you still have to compete every day.”

Emerson said he’s not worried about starting right away at the school he selects. He hopes he’ll be a part of the rotation that sees the field right away, but starting isn’t a major factor in his decision.

Camp season beginning in Tuscaloosa

Alabama will have its first camp of the “summer” this Saturday. The Crimson Tide will have some of the nation’s best specialists on hand for their kicking camp. It would not be surprising to see a punter offered a scholarship this weekend. This will be punter JK Scott’s last season in Tuscaloosa. I will not pretend like I am an expert in special teams recruiting, so I can’t say who would be a good guess who the lucky punter will be.

Sunday through Tuesday is Alabama’s high school camp, where some of the nation’s best players will be on campus. Some of those recruits will need to perform at a high level to earn a committable offer. SEC Country should have a list of recruits expected to attend by Friday night.

A reminder: Unlike many other schools, Alabama does not allow media to attend its recruiting camps, so I will not be in Tuscaloosa providing a consistent flow of updates.

More from Luke Stampini at the Elite 11 Finals:

quote:

Justin Fields says all the right things about being committed. But schools are recruiting like he's wide open. Trevor Lawrence not getting nearly as much recruiting attention from other schools makes you wonder if he's saying he's locked in and Fields is telling them he's listening? Opposite recruitments from uber-talented quarterbacks from the same state, so what is causing the difference?

I tend to believe Fields decommits, but I'm not extremely confident in that prediction. Just going off rumblings I hear. I'm even less confident in picking which school he would flip to if he did actually decommit. Florida is in it, Auburn is pushing, seems as if FSU is lingering around.

Joey Gatewood was significantly better than his Orlando regional showing, and about on par with his Charlotte regional showing. He was really bad in Orlando.

Charlotte and yesterday, he was solid. He wasn't in my top 11, but probably would have been in a top 15 or so. He is an impressive looking prospect physically though. Also had pretty good combine numbers at Charlotte too.

Does he look like he could be a college QB or should we expect a position change?

Let's see how he does in pro-day simulation and 7on7.

He's big enough and athletic enough to make a position change, but Auburn has been able to use those type of players at QB in the past. Long-term, as an NFL QB, I personally haven't seen that type of potential yet.

Tyler Shough was probably in that group that would rank around 12-15 as well. It's not that he performed poorly, just didn't jump out like others.

These next two days is probably when guys will start separating from the pack a bit more. In reality you got about 4 or so that are above the rest, then about 15 others that are all pretty close together, and then a few at the bottom a struggled with consistency.

2. Who is one player you are most interested to see face elite competition there?

Rob Cassidy: Florida State linebacker commit Amari Gainer is a player we have ranked higher than most. He is in the process of adding weight and has packed on a couple pounds since the season. Based in Tallahassee, Gainer rarely gets to see a deep pool of FBS-bound competition, so it will be interesting to see how the slightly underweight Gainer stacks up at this point.

Mike Farrell: Quarterback Devin Leary doesn’t get a ton of attention as an NC State commitment and new four-star but I want to see how he holds up against guys such as Trevor Lawrence, Matt Corral and Justin Fields. I’m not saying he will prove he’s better than those guys, but I think he can hang with them.

Adam Friedman: Quarterback Harrison Bailey will have his work cut out for him when he touches down in Indianapolis. Just finishing his freshman year, Bailey is already pretty experienced when it comes to facing elite talent but this is a different environment when everything he does will be put under a microscope. His progress for such a young player puts him in special company but we'll find out just how ready he is for the big stage.

Adam Gorney: Isaac Taylor-Stuart. He's a phenomenal talent with excellent size and athleticism but he took a little bit of a backseat at the Los Angeles Rivals camp and I really want to see him compete and get after receivers to see just how good he is against elite competition. My guess is that he shouldn't have much of an issue with most of the players there since he's such a talented corner but I'd like to see him step it up even more and take over at times.

Josh Helmholdt: Cornerback Julius Brents. He was sensational at the Columbus Rivals Camp and is on home turf in Indianapolis. There is every reason to believe he will provide an encore at the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge.

Nick Krueger: There isn’t much mystery as to whether or not the players invited to the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge can hang with top talent, but just from my region, D’Shawn Jamison and Verone McKinley are fringe Rivals250 prospects at cornerback. Can they show enough to work themselves back into that picture? Class of 2019 quarterback Grant Gunnell plays for a small private school on a team with a lot of talent. Is he a big fish in a small pond or an elite quarterback no matter who is playing defense? Also, this will be a great event to determine if 2019 defensive prospect Anfernee Orji is a legit safety prospect, or if linebacker is truly his future calling.

Chad Simmons: There are many, but Clay Webb is one I am really thinking hard about as a five-star offensive lineman in the 2019 class. He has dominated each camp I have seen him compete at over the last year and a half and now he will go not only against the best from his region, but the country, with many being a year older than him. He could play his way into a fifth star with a strong performance in Indianapolis.

Woody Wommack: Honestly I really want to see if anyone can cover Amon-Ra St. Brown. He put on one of the best camp performances I've ever seen at the Rivals Los Angeles camp and I expect him to present a major challenge for any of the defensive backs he will face in Indianapolis.

3. What's been the best performance you remember seeing at one of the past five Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge events?

Rob Cassidy: Quarterback Kyle Allen, who transferred from Texas A&M to Houston, is yet to make his mark in college. But he put on one of the best 7-on-7 performances I've ever seen at the event. Allen completed something like 21 passes in a row to start the event and took home MVP honors.

Mike Farrell: Najee Harris last year was off the charts and I remember Christian Kirk and KD Cannon dominating the event when it was held in Chicago. But to me watching Derwin James play both ways for his under-manned team in Baltimore was awesome to see. He was amazing.

Adam Friedman: Penn State's former five-star cornerback Lamont Wade shut down former Miami Hurricanes signee Sam Bruce in the Five-Star Challenge 7-on-7 tournament a few years ago. Bruce was a senior and a 7-on-7 legend while Wade was one of the few underclassmen invited to compete at the event in Baltimore. That performance propelled Wade to stardom and was truly indicative of what was to come from the rest of his high school career.

Adam Gorney: I keep coming back to O.J. Howard at our first Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge in 2012 in Atlanta. The guy just looked like an Adonis and absolutely played great, too. He showed off great speed, awesome hands and no one could stop him. The only guy who had a prayer was five-star linebacker Jaylon Smith, who went to Notre Dame and is now with the Dallas Cowboys. Those two competed really tough but Howard was unstoppable against everybody else. It always befuddled me why he wasn't more of a weapon in Alabama's offense. Something tells me a big pro career could be ahead.

Josh Helmholdt: Kyle Allen put together one of the best 7-on-7 performances I have seen from a quarterback at the 2013 Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge. He shredded defenses and led the team I drafted to the 7-on-7 title, so I'm partial to the current Houston Cougars QB.

Nick Krueger: Prior to Joe Mixon's off-field issues and public image nightmare, the first time that I had ever seen him in action was during his Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge appearance in 2013. To me, he was Najee Harris before Harris was and a guy that I thought looked as comfortable running deep routes as receivers that do so on a regular basis. That year was also the year that Kyle Allen and Travis Rudolph stole the show as 7v7 teammates and were truly impressive.

Woody Wommack: It's hard to nail down just one performance throughout the years but in 2014 Byron Cowart's domination at the event was incredible. His college career hasn't gone as planned so far but everyone was floored at how well he did that year and that was a big part of why he ended up holding onto the top spot in the nation. It will be interesting to see if he can get that edge back and turn things around over the next two years at Auburn.
