2. Trevor Lawrence
Recruiting wrap: Lawrence is committed to Clemson.
Performance: It’s not often the nation’s No. 1 prospect is surpassed at an event, and in Atlanta he just narrowly missed out on MVP honors. Lawrence was near perfect despite tough conditions for quarterbacks and showed his trademark arm strength and accuracy.

3. Justin Fields
Recruiting wrap: Fields is committed to Penn State.
Performance: Fields battled through an ankle injury to participate in the Charlotte stop of the series, and while he was visibly limping at times, it didn’t impact his ability to throw the ball. He was consistently effective and has shown continued improvement over the past 12 months.

8. Tyler Shough
Recruiting wrap: Shough has offers from Michigan, Missouri, South Carolina and several others.
Performance: Shough’s stock has been on the rise during the spring, and he showed why at the Rivals Camp in Los Angeles. He narrowly missed MVP honors and was praised for his size, athleticism and arm strength by the event’s coaches.

10. Joey Gatewood
Recruiting wrap: Gatewood is committed to Auburn.
Performance: Gatewood was part of a deep quarterback group at the Orlando stop and was praised at the event for his continued improvement as a passer. One of the youngest prospects ever to be invited to the Five-Star Challenge in 2015, Gatewood will return to the event this year after earning another invitation.

CORONADO, Calif. – The Steve Clarkson Quarterback Retreat started Saturday and many of the top high school quarterbacks – along with an outstanding list of college signal callers – were in attendance. Here are some takeaways from the event and a look at which top prospects stood out.

LAWRENCE IS EXCEPTIONAL
Trevor Lawrence is the top-rated recruit in the 2018 class, and he backed that up on Saturday delivering passes all over the field, showing off great arm strength and athleticism and once again showing why he’s such a special prospect in this class.
One thing that especially stands out about the five-star Clemson commit is his mental makeup and maturity. The Cartersville, Ga., standout took to coaching, tweaked some things during drills to make cleaner throws and really worked out hard all day in an effort to improve.
It was impressive to see because someone so highly ranked and already committed to the national champs could have mailed it in on beautiful Coronado Island. Instead, Lawrence came here to work and he looked great all day.

THE YOUNG KIDS COULD GO
Three young quarterbacks in 2020 Harrison Bailey, 2020 Luca Diamont and 2021 Aaron McLaughlin all worked out at the Quarterback Retreat, and all three looked like they belonged for sure.
Bailey was probably the most polished of the group even if his ball did sail a little bit early on. The Marietta, Ga., standout made all the throws, showed off great mechanics and delivered some beautiful passes once receivers got involved in the drills.
Diamont has a lot of arm talent and athleticism, and even though he had some errant throws he really took to instruction well, understood exactly what was asked of him and put the ball on the money numerous times.
McLaughlin has been working with Clarkson for a couple years already, and it’s hard to believe he’s a 2021 prospect. He’s already the size of Lawrence – if not slightly thicker – and while he does aim the ball sometimes in an effort to get more zip on it, he has some really special qualities for a quarterback that young.

The Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge presented by adidas will be held June 9-10 in Indianapolis with the nation's top talents converging to compete in the star-studded event. With past participants that include Leonard Fournette, Deshaun Watson, Dalvin Cook and several others, the bar is set high for any player that attends. Today, we take a look at five players from the Southeast entering the event with something to prove.

TE John FitzPatrick
Fitzpatrick is known for being a good inline blocker in his high school's triple option offense, so he needs to show the ability to run routes, get some separation and be consistent with his hands. If he performs in Indianapolis the way he did in Atlanta, there will not be many questions unanswered at the end of the event. Fitzpatrick is still open, but he plans to visit Alabama, Georgia and UCLA this summer.

DE Derrick McLendon
McLendon has performed well on the camp circuit in 2017 and this fall will be his chance to really take that next step. He has gotten strong and he is starting to fill out his frame. His ability to shed blocks and get away from top offensive tackles is something we will be watching next week. He is a great athlete with length and quickness, so he just needs to show more physicality. Florida may hold a slight advantage, but Alabama, Georgia and numerous others are in this race.

ATH Richard Jibunor
Jibunor needs to show how he is progressing at linebacker. Some schools like him early as an athletic tight end. He is known for being a strong edge rusher, but now he is at linebacker playing on the second level, so that is something we will watch. How does he cover? That is probably the biggest question. Auburn is viewed as the frontrunner, but Jibunor is not naming leaders yet. Tennessee is right there and he is camping at Georgia, just a couple of miles from his home this week.

WR Trey Knox
The class of 2019 wide receiver has burst onto the recruiting scene over the past few months, collecting offers from some of the nation's top programs. After earning his invitation by dominating at the Rivals Camp in St. Louis, Knox could be in the discussion for a spot high in the 2019 Rivals250 when it is released at the end of the summer. After coming into St. Louis with no expectations, how will Knox handle going against elite competition in Indy? That's something we'll be watching closely.

I read in a tidbit a few articles ago that the staff isn't letting recruits commit right now because of lengthening the evaluation process. Is that true?
I'm not trying to freak out about having two commits at the beginning of summer.

The latest Rivals100 for the class of 2018 has been released and there have been some major moves, including three new five-star prospects, bringing our still-early total to 23. And while quarterback Trevor Lawrence remains our No. 1 prospect, the top 10 saw some shifting.
There are no changes in the top three with cornerback Patrick Surtain No. 2 and defensive end Xavier Thomas No. 3, California wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown jumped up to No. 4 and took over as his state’s top prospect. New five-star Justin Fields, a Penn State quarterback commitment, moved up 99 spots to No. 8 and safety Anthony Cook and running back Lorenzo Lingard, a Miami commitment, also moved into the top 10 with minor moves upwards.
Wide receivers Terrace Marshall Jr. and Devonta Jason, a Kansas commitment, are also new five-stars checking in at No. 20 and No. 22 respectively. Wide receiver Jalen Hall is the last five-star, falling 17 spots to No. 23 while Oklahoma offensive line commitment Brey Walker remains the highest ranked four-star.
Here’s a breakdown from our regional analysts of the new five stars and the biggest movers.

THE NEW FIVE-STARS
quote:
QB Justin Fields
“It is hard to find a more exciting player in this class. Yes, Lawrence is a special talent, but the way Fields can throw, the way he can run and the way he can make plays, it makes many think of Cam Newton. Fields has a live arm, he has really improved as a passer and his legs make him scary. Fields remains committed to Penn State, but Auburn, Florida, Florida State and Georgia among others continue to recruit him.” – Chad Simmons, Rivals.com Southeast Recruiting Analyst

WR Terrace Marshall
“Marshall is one of the smoothest wide receivers in the 2018 class and with his laid back personality, it's easy to discount his dominance. But after a spring that saw him excel against some of the best defensive backs in the country, it's not a surprise that Marshall earned his bump up to five-star status. LSU, Texas A&M, TCU and several others are battling for Marshall and with good reason.” -- Woody Wommack, Rivals.com Southeast Recruiting Analyst

Devonta Jason
“The Kansas commit spent the spring making highlight reel catches at camps and 7-on-7 tournaments across the country, proving that he belongs in the five-star class. Jason has everything from measureables to on-field and camp production on his resume and his size and catch radius makes him one of the nation's best. Kansas has never signed a five-star prospect in the Rivals.com era, but now has a chance to do so.” -- Wommack

BIG MOVERS
quote:
OT Penei Sewell
“The massive offensive tackle has had an outstanding spring. He has basically dominated every defensive lineman at numerous camps, including the Rivals 3 Stripe Camp Series presented by adidas in Los Angeles. For someone who is 6-foot-5 and 340 pounds, Sewell moves surprisingly well and has light feet but also has a stunning punch and he can swallow up smaller defensive ends. He's clearly one of the best — and most efficient — offensive tackles in this class. USC, Oklahoma and many others remain involved.” -- Adam Gorney, Rivals.com National Recruiting Analyst
Posted on 5/30/17 at 1:06 pm to TideSaint
quote:
DT Michael Thompson
“Thompson's progression arc continues to curve higher, especially after his dominating MVP performance at the St. Louis stop of the Rivals 3 Stripe Camp. Still legitimately a two-way prospect, Thompson worked at defensive tackle in St. Louis and was unstoppable from that position. His combination of size, speed and quickness overwhelms opposing offensive linemen. Thompson's recruitment remains wide open, with LSU, Missouri, Oklahoma and Ohio State as strong contenders.” – Josh Helmholdt, Rivals.com Midwest Recruiting Analyst
