Brunswick (Ga.) class of 2019 offensive lineman Warren McClendon held his own Sunday against older pass-rushers, especially early in the competition phase. He has a great frame and plays very patient despite his youth, seldom over-setting on the edge. He can improve his upper-body strength and ability to anchor, but his movement skill and leverage discipline is fairly rare this early on. Clemson, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Florida State and others already lie on McClendon's scholarship offer list.

Class of 2019 offensive tackle prospect Wanya Morris is among the most coveted Peach State prospects in the rising junior class and he showed why on Sunday. The Loganville (Ga.) Grayson standout, who committed to Florida State last month, was so impressive at left tackle he was the lone underclasssman to crack Scout's top 10 offensive perfomers following the loaded event. Morris, who is still considering Clemson, Georgia, Alabama and Ohio State, used his great length and strength to neutralize pass rushers before they got deep into their moves. Perhaps most impressively, though, was how Morris learned from early mistakes and adjusted against some of the top rising senior's there.

Although he was one of youngest prospects at the event, 2020 Charlotte (N.C.) Providence Day wide receiver Porter Rooks more than held his own against some of the top 2018 and 2019 prospects in the country. Rooks was smooth in and out of his routes and able to create separation. He also showed good concentration and caught the ball well. Some of his early offers include Alabama, Auburn, Louisville, Miami, North Carolina, NC State, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest.

Copeland strongly considering Alabama

Jacob Copeland was in Tuscaloosa for A-Day last month, and he received the royal treatment like many top recruits do.

Copeland, a 4-star wide receiver from Escambia High School (Pensacola, Fla.), received a call from assistant director of player personnel Sam Petitto the morning of the spring game and what he heard next startled the outspoken recruit for a few seconds.

“They told me that I was going to be in the car with [Alabama coach Nick] Saban,” Copeland told SEC Country. “I said, ‘Saban? What are we doing with Saban? Hold on.’ In my head, I was just saying to myself that I’m really about to get in the car with Saban. We were just cruising along.”

The Under Armour All-American rode in the front seat of Saban’s car with 5-star wide receiver Justyn Ross in the back. Copeland called the experience with Saban the “greatest moment” in his recruitment thus far.

Copeland got to Tuscaloosa the night before and had no clue he was going to have that opportunity. When he found out, he would be arriving at Bryant-Denny Stadium with Saban, he wasn’t nervous because he said he has no problem connecting with the coach.

“Saban is just a really cool coach,” Copeland said. “I can vibe with him. He’s not always serious like people think. If you spent time around him, you’d understand.”

During the ride, Saban told Copeland how he can make an impact on both sides of the ball. Alabama has told the nation’s No. 9 wide receiver that they like him on the offensive side of the ball but also at cornerback. Sometimes, recruits don’t like being told coaches have thought about what that player would be like at a different position, like in-state running back Harold Joiner, who has LSU on top, but Copeland actually loves it.

“That just shows me what he thinks about my talent,” Copeland said.

Copeland has a top five of Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Ole Miss and Tennessee, but it appears like it’s a two-team battle between the Crimson Tide and the Gators. Alabama likes where it stands with Copeland, but so do several people inside Florida’s program.

Either way, he’s going to play college football in the SEC when he makes his commitment known, which is expected to happen at the Under Armour All-America Game in January.

“That’s the strongest conference and I feel like I’m built for that,” Copeland said. “Through my whole life, I played with kids way older than me and I was young coming up, so I just had to learn from my big brothers. … Playing in the SEC, you gotta ball out if you want to be on that big-dog level.”

The nation’s No. 52 overall player says Florida is recruiting him the hardest. Ever since Jim McElwain took the Florida job, he’s been prioritizing him like no other coach. The entire Gators staff is in touch with him almost on a daily basis.

As for Alabama, Copeland said he only hears from defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt and defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley. But those two, especially Ansley, have developed a strong relationship with him.

“That’s my guy, man,” Copeland said of Ansley. “Me and him got the same personality. Ever since we met, I’ve just been comfortable around him. It’s like we’ve known each other all of our lives.”

So, what kind of chance does Alabama have to lock up Copeland’s commitment? He definitely loves everything about the school.

“The Crimson Tide, man, that’s a legendary school,” Copeland said. “They have national championships. Saban is a legendary coach.”

I still believe Florida has the best chance at landing Copeland when he makes his commitment, but Alabama has certainly made this an interesting race.

Alabama visits 5-star DE once again

Alabama was back at Harrisburg (Penn.) High School on Wednesday for the second time in two weeks. Harrisburg is home to one of the Crimson Tide’s top targets regardless of position, 5-star defensive end Micah Parsons.

Parsons de-committed from Penn State on April 23. Ohio State is viewed as the favorite to land the nation’s No. 3 overall player because of his close relationship with Buckeyes defensive line coach Larry Johnson and Parsons naming his dog Brutus, which is the name of Ohio State’s mascot.

The 6-foot-3, 241-pound prospect is expected to visit Tuscaloosa this summer but a date for that visit hasn’t been set. The good news for Alabama is outside linebackers coach Tosh Lupoi is on the case, and there’s perhaps no one other than Saban on Alabama’s staff who does a better job when it comes to recruiting.

Dorian Gerald update

Junior college defensive end Dorian Gerald has scooped up some pretty significant offers during the month of May. Alabama kick-started the run on last week. LSU, Florida State, North Carolina State and Georgia have since followed.

Gerald was productive during his first season at the College of the Canyons (California), recording 54 tackles and 12 sacks.

“I’ve just been praying hard and trying to keep a level head, because it’s a lot, it’s a lot going on,” Gerald said. “When a lot of coaches are telling you the same things — you’re the best thing they’ve ever seen. … I’m trying to keep a level head. I’ve been praying.

“I’ve been talking with my family about everything, so I’ve been good (with) my family and coaches. It’s crazy, but I’ve been trying to act pretty calm about it and try not to think about it so much.”

Arizona State, Louisville, South Carolina, Tennessee and Washington State have also offered the rising sophomore. After his semester ends on May 31, Gerald will be back home for summer break. It’s around that time when he’ll narrow down his list of suitors.

South Carolina appears to be in good position to make the cut. It certainly helps that Gerald (6-foot-3, 255 pounds) played at West Florence (S.C.) High School before moving on to Columbia’s Palmetto Prep Academy in 2015.

The Gamecocks will “most definitely” host him for a visit while he’s home on break. Others are angling to get him on campus.

“Louisville brought up to me about doing an official visit while I’m home this summer,” Gerald said. “I don’t know if I’m going to do it. I might save it for a game. I don’t know, but they brought it up to me. Do you want to come on an official visit?

“Florida State wants me to visit. LSU wants me to visit, all of them want me to visit.”

Just how many he makes is still up in the air.

“I think it’s going to be a lot for the summer. I’ll probably visit a few places, but I don’t think I’m going to have time for everywhere,” Gerald said.

South Carolina has three coaches working him: Muschamp, defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson and defensive line coach Lance Thompson.

“They need me. They want me. That’s clear,” Gerald said, “And that’s what I like about Coach Muschamp and Coach Thompson. They said they need me. They want me there at South Carolina and that’s what I like. They’re honest. And that’s all I ask for from all coaches is honesty.”

PINSON, Ala. — To the Nix family, the conversation around Bo Nix’s recruitment has become comical at times.

Patrick Nix, Bo’s father, was an Iron Bowl hero for Auburn in its undefeated season in 1993. Bo has grown up a lifelong Auburn fan, so there are articles and questions all over the place whether any school other than Auburn has a shot to land Nix, a 2019 recruiting prospect.

Those queries have even flowed over to the coaching ranks as staffs gauge their chances with Nix, the nation’s No. 2 dual-threat QB in the 247Sports composite rankings.

“A lot of them are like, ‘Do we really have a chance?’ ” Patrick said. “My thing is, if you don’t offer, I can assure you that you don’t have a chance. If you do, I don’t know. But if you don’t, then you don’t have a chance because everyone else has.”

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound quarterback holds 17 offers from all the top programs. Auburn made its offer in June 2016.

Bo’s college decision remains roughly a year away, he said. But just by looking at his 247Sports recruiting page, it’s obvious what the general public thinks will happen at the end of it. All 10 of the Crystal Ball predictions favor the Tigers, which has almost everything to do with his father’s legacy at Auburn and Bo’s childhood fandom.

Patrick wants to downplay how much that will factor into Bo’s decision.

“Every kid is a fan of some school. Growing up, you hope that schools offers you. As you grow, you realize that you’re not making a decision as a fan. You’re making a decision as a player, and that’s completely different,” Patrick said.

“Yeah, he’s been an Auburn fan his whole life, but that’s no different than a kid down the road that’s been an Alabama fan his whole life. … The funny thing I’ve seen is it’s like he’s the only one out there that has any allegiance to any school. If people really think that, they’re out of their mind, and they probably miss out on the kids. ”

It’s also important, for both Patrick and Bo, to separate each other’s career paths.

Patrick had a successful four years on the Plains. It’s not out of the question Bo will, as well. But Patrick doesn’t want his own career trajectory to add decision-making pressure on his 4-star son.

“The biggest thing I’ve told him is he’s in the driver’s seat,” Patrick said. “He’s been very mature with it of looking at everything and keeping his eyes open to what’s the best for him. I’ve told him all along I want whatever is the best experience for him, not my experience. I’ve already had my experience, and I want him to have his experience. I hope his experience is as good as mine was.”

Let’s talk Nix family comparisons

Patrick Nix’s name is mentioned with some of the great quarterbacks in Auburn lore.

It begs the obvious question: Will Bo be the same way?

Patrick isn’t big into comparisons. It’s a different day and time in a much different college football and recruiting landscape. But he also recognizes his son’s innate leadership and quarterbacking ability.

“As far as a player, he’s farther along than I was at this time. I think most players are now than when I was coming out. Things have changed drastically over the course of time,” Patrick said. “Quite honestly, we try not to compare too much. His goal and my goal for him is to be the best him he can be. However good that is, let’s make sure to maximize that and not worry about being better than your dad, be better than your little brother.”

When Bo talks about his recruitment, he has a distinct reason for why he wants to wait another year before making a college decision. He is operating in the here and now. Bo has his sights set on his next football season at Pinson Valley more than where he’ll suit up for college.

It all links back to his overarching goal.

“I want to be the best high school quarterback in the nation,” Bo said. “I’m young. I want to experience high school. In doing that, I have to focus on the now and not the future. At the same time, I want to have a good experience with the recruitment and have fun.”

Bo is on the fast track to be one of the best quarterbacks in the country, not just in the 2019 recruiting class.

At the Nike Opening camp in Atlanta, he was named top quarterback overall. That camp showcased many great 2018 quarterback prospects, including Ohio State commit Emory Jones.

Bo doesn’t just want to be the best in the country, though. He has a house full of quarterbacks he wants to top.

“He’s said it a couple times. If he can be the best quarterback in the house when it’s all said and done, he’s going to be pretty good,” Patrick said. “I was fortunate enough to have had a good career. He’s had a pretty good career. And he’s going to be pushed by one coming up behind him that wants to do that. For us in our family, it’s a friendly and fun little competition to see who does what.”

BOL just published a VIP article regarding the 15 recruits most likely to join the class. It's premium content so I can't copy and paste it, but I will summarize it (the statements are my own).

Here we go:

15. Josh Jobe

Even though he publicly stated he had shut down his recruitment there are multiple sources saying he is still considering Alabama.

This one is a little surprising, but I've seen on at least two sites that we are in his Top 3 with Auburn and Florida State.

13. A Quarterback

They mention Jack Tuttle (my personal favorite), Jarren Williams or Tanner McKee.

Williams says Kentucky is his leader.

McKee is actually a 2020 recruit due to his Mormon mission obligation.

He's stated multiple times that Alabama is his leader.

I know one recruiting service questions his top end speed and that is one reason why he is a 3-star on their site.

If he runs well at the Opening (assuming he's invited) he'll receive a huge bump.

I think he may have tried to commit at A-Day and was told no. That's just my personal opinion though.
