Defensive back (4)

4-star CB Jalyn Armour-Davis, St. Paul’s Episcopal (Mobile, Ala.): Armour-Davis feels like an Auburn-Florida State battle, but Alabama could become a factor as it attempts to add a cornerback after not landing any in its 2017 class. Still, Auburn was the first team to offer Armour-Davis, and he has said that matters — which is why he makes his way into the projection.

4-star safety Myles Mason, Pleasant Grove (Ala.): This will be a classic Iron Bowl fight, but it is not clear how much priority Alabama will place on this Birmingham-area prospect. As a result, we think Auburn sits in the best shape with Mason as Greg Brown attempts to form his first full defensive backs class.

4-star safety Quindarious Monday, Carver (Atlanta): Monday has called Auburn his leader, and it appears the Tigers’ lead grew in recent weeks. He impressed at the Nike Opening regional in Atlanta with his willingness to lead defensive backs. Auburn would be getting a gem.

3-star ATH Cam Taylor, Park Crossing (Montgomery, Ala.): Taylor is a bit of an unknown because he was injured last season. Most college staffs want to go see him this spring to further evaluate. Taylor is an impressive athlete who plays quarterback for his high school, but he’ll likely play slot receiver or defensive back. We anticipate he’ll bounce back from injury well. He’s at Auburn a lot, so we like the Tigers’ chances.

Top Performers: Jersey Nike

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - 247Sports takes you inside Sunday’s Nike Football The Opening Regional.

ALPHA DOG

Harrisburg (Pa.) High five-star Micah Parsons began the day at linebacker where he cruised through position work, he then looked good in coverage against tight ends. He was then a handful for tight ends to block in 1-on-1s before closing quickly on running backs in cat and mouse. The nation’s No. 3 recruit per 247Sports then walked to the other end of the field and smoked offensive tackles as a pass rusher with his combination of quickness and strength off the edge. The U.S. Army All-American would flourish as a 3-4 outside linebacker but certainly brings a lot of traits to the table as a defensive end as well.

After recently decommitting from the Nittany Lions, he is considering Penn State, Ohio State, Georgia, Florida State and Alabama among others. I think he most likely stays closer to home putting PSU and OSU in great position with the tea leaves reading Buckeyes right now.

Parsons won linebacker MVP honors and was one of five invited to The Opening Finals set for the first week of July at the Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton, Ore.

NEXT FIVE DEFENSE

1. Notre Dame’s Top247 defensive tackle commit Jayson Amedilola’s quickness was tough for the interior offensive linemen to handle. The 6-foot-3, 283-pound Amediloa has a strong frame and performed like one of America’s top prospects on the interior and was invited to The Opening finals.

2. Amedilola’s teammate at Jersey City (NJ) St. Peter’s Prep in Shayne Simon looked like one of the elite prospects in this part of the country. Ranked by the 247Sports Composite as the nation’s No. 8 outside linebacker, the 6-foot-3, 215-pound Simon worked out at safety after posting a very impressive 4.07 shuttle time. Simon was terrific in drills, was around the football in 7-on-7 and even showed he could cover the top receivers at the event. Has all the traits to be one of the best linebackers in this class and will be shooting up the 247Sports Recruiting Rankings. Top schools include Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State, Stanford and UCLA, and he visited all six during the spring.

3. Owings Mills (Md.) McDonogh Top247 defensive tackle PJ Mustipher stood in at 6-foot-5, 290-pounds and impressed with his quickness, motor and athleticism. Also a basketball player and wrestler, the long-framed Mustipher has plenty of upside in the tank. Top schools include Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State and Tennessee. A decision could come within the month. Mustipher was invited to The Opening finals.

4. Cat and mouse was easy for Penns Grove (NJ) The Peddie School linebacker and Virginia commit Javar Garrett who tracked guys down well and wasn’t fazed by change of direction backs. A long frame, plus athlete, Garrett flashed the entire day whether it was drills or playing in space.

5. Philadelphia (Pa.) Imhotep safety Isheem Young isn’t going to blow you away with his frame but the Top247 recruit was really active in coverage, especially in the half-skelly portion where he got his hands on a lot of footballs. Played the deep ball well. Penn State continues to look like the program to beat with Clemson, Ohio State and West Virginia being others he mentioned. Young earned position MVP honors.

TOP FIVE OFFENSE

1. Ranked by 247Sports as the nation’s No. 1 tight end, Jeremy Ruckert was invited to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl as well as earning the golden ticket to The Opening finals showing he can do everything the position desires. His footwork was fantastic in drills, his hands are elite including one-handed grabs, he was a lights-out blocker where one coach yelled “Ruckert’s not letting anyone into the club” during those 1-on-1s and he’s a game-changer as a receiver. Ohio State remains the 247Sports Crystal Ball forecast with Michigan, Notre Dame and Wisconsin rounding out the final four. A decision is expected before the season.

2. Monmouth Junction (NJ) South Brunswick standout and Penn State commit Justin Shorter put himself in the discussion as the nation’s top receiver which included winning the fastest man at this camp before beating defensive backs deep time and time again. Shorter can get open deep with more than a go-route which late in the camp included a nifty post corner which left the defensive back spinning like a top. Another who’s ranking will shoot up this week. Shorter was invited to The Opening finals.

3. Wayne (NJ) DePaul Catholic 2019 Ronnie Hickman made as many plays as anyone on this day and was arguably the top prospect at the camp at his position. He would just explode away from coverage. Ohio State is already the 247Sports Crystal Ball favorite.

4. The nation’s No. 3 pro-style passer in Washington commit Jacob Sirmon was the most consistent thrower of the football in Elite 11 drills. The Bothell (Wash.) High standout got into rhythm quickly and typically hit receivers in stride, put the ball where it belongs. Sirmon’s steady performance earned him an invite to the Elite 11 Finals in Los Angeles the first week of June.

5. Wayne (N.J.) De Paul Catholic offensive lineman Khris Banks projects best on the interior but performed well at tackle and was the only one to get a win against Parsons riding him outside and out of the play. Has MAC offers now but showed he could play at the Power Five level.

CAMP NOTABLES

N.C. State quarterback commit Devin Leary was invited to the Elite 11 Finals after a second-straight good showing on the circuit. His arm talent goes toe to toe with anyone and the New Jersey state Gatorade Player of the Year has fantastic film as well. A four-star candidate.

Local talent Zamar Wise of Newark (NJ) Barringer was the top 2019 quarterback, flashing a live arm, spun a good ball and was accurate. Has a lot of physical tools.

Others that threw well include Vanderbilt commit Allan Walters, Nick Patti, 2019 Ta’Quan Roberson and Will Levis who also had the day’s highest Nike Football Rating.

New West Virginia commit Leddie Brown and Florida commit Iverson Clement flashed the most in the running back group while Notre Dame commit Markese Stepp looked good in drills as he continues to come back from injury. Clement was the standout of cat and mouse with his open field moves. Camp MVP honors went to Romeo Holden.

Wouldn’t be surprising to see Top247 receiver Jahan Dotson get his invite to The Opening down the road as he made several plays in 1-on-1s and Chigoziem Okonkwo was a specimen that was in the hunt to win position MVP honors. Dotson is high on Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State with the Nittany Lions being the new Crystal Ball forecast. Okonkwo said he’s favoring Georgia Tech and Maryland. A Stanford offer would be a game-changer. Emmanuel Oliver had a terrific day and Duke commit Jake Bobo made his fair share of nice grabs as well.

The tight end group was special. Penn State commit Zack Kuntz is a long, athletic target that could develop into the best player in this class at the position on the next level. His future Nittany Lions teammate Pat Freiermuth was good too. Kyle Pitts, Messiah Swinson and Jayson Oweh all could be big-time guys on the next level as well with Oweh being one that probably is dynamic as a pass rusher as well.

IN the trenches offensive line MVP Anthony Marinelli won the majority of his reps on the interior, moves well laterally, sits well and can hold off bigger defensive tackles. Marinelli has a few MAC offers.

On the other side of the ball, Tyler Friday was a top four performer not he defensive line with the previously mentioned guys with Dorian Hardy and Notre Dame commit Justin Ademilola showing flashes as well.

Rutgers commit Jarrett Paul was one of the top guys in the secondary and made a lot of plays and Shamel Lazarus was a top cornerback at the event. Naim Muhammad was a quick-footed, competitive cornerback.

The recruiting game for Austin 2019 defensive back Reddy Steward has started with a bid from Big 10 country.

Steward tweeted this morning that he received his first offer from Michigan. He told AL.com that the Wolverines are the lone program to have shown strong interest thus far. Michigan defensive backs coach Brian Smith gave the offer, Steward said.

The 5-foot-11, 160-pound Steward recorded 80 tackles, 10 pass breakups and an interception last season as the Black Bears advanced to the Class 6A semifinals.

Michigan has enjoyed recent success in the Tennessee Valley, getting Florence safety J'Marrick Woods this past signing class.

Steward is the second Austin player with a Power Five offer. Rising senior running back Asa Martin counts Alabama and Auburn among his numerous offers and he is rated the No. 12 player at his position nationally by the 247Sports Composite.

There is now some movement on the recruiting front for the state's top prospect.

Justyn Ross, a 6-foot-4, 197-pound receiver from Central-Phenix City, announced a top 11 on Friday night.

Alabama and Auburn made the cut, as expected. Ross has been to those schools numerous times over the past couple of years. So did Clemson, a place Ross visited recently as well and seemed to enjoy.

Ohio State was on the list. OSU quarterback commit Emory Jones is recruiting Ross hard to join him, just like Auburn quarterback commit Joey Gatewood.

Ole Miss, Florida State, LSU, Southern Cal, Miami, Mississippi State and Florida are the other schools on the list.

Ross is ranked as the No. 28 prospect nationally and is a four-star recruit. He's the highest-ranked four-star prospect in the country.

He confirmed to AL.com that he will narrow it down further after his mother returns home in a few weeks after serving our country with the U.S. National Guard in Kuwait.

Ross came back from a torn ACL as a sophomore and caught 38 passes for 663 yards and eight touchdowns last season. He is a 2018 Under Armour All-American.

Jacob Sirmon interested in Alabama despite deep ties with Huskies

Jacob Sirmon is one of Alabama’s biggest quarterback targets in the Class of 2018, but the Crimson Tide will have to flip him from his commitment first if they’re going to land the 5-star prospect from Washington.

Sirmon, the nation’s No. 3 pro-style prospect, committed to the Huskies in 2015 and has remained firm in his commitment, but he’s still showing interest in Alabama. He told our Land of 10 reporter, Corey Masisak, at the Nike Opening regional in New Jersey on Sunday that the Crimson Tide still are on his mind.

“They talk to me quite frequently,” Sirmon said. “They were actually up (at my school) this past Friday. It’s good to see some interest from that side. I respect the coaches there. They obviously have a great program and do lots of good things.”

It’s not going to be easy for the Tide to flip him from his commitment, however. Sirmon has visited Washington countless times because his high school is around 20 minutes away from the college. Because of that, he’s become so familiar with the coaching staff that he’s already learning plays and breaking down film. He also has several connections to the school through his father, David, who is an associate professor in UW’s Foster School of Business; his uncle, Peter, who coached linebackers at the school in 2013; his grandfather played for the Huskies; and his cousin, Jack, is also committed to the Huskies in the Class of 2018.

Honored to have received an Offer from The University of Alabama!! #SEC #RollTide pic.twitter.com/nrR8JOvZlJ

— Jacob Sirmon (@JacobSirmon) August 3, 2016

There are lots of obstacles in the way to make Sirmon change his mind on Washington, but the good news is that he’s listening and talking to Alabama, which is in need of a quarterback in the Class of 2018. There’s still a long way to go until National Signing Day 2018, but right now, there are very few elite quarterbacks seriously interested in the Tide. That’s mainly because Alabama has three high-level quarterbacks on its roster in Jalen Hurts, Tua Tagovailoa and Mac Jones.

Still, Sirmon admits that he has communicated with new offensive coordinator Brian Daboll about possibly being the Tide’s QB this recruiting cycle.

“He’s a good guy. I’ve talked to him a little bit,” Sirmon said. “He obviously knows his stuff and has a great track record. That’s definitely exciting for their program and the quarterbacks they have already.”

To my knowledge, Sirmon hasn’t visited Tuscaloosa before. That will be a hurdle for Alabama to clear if there is a chance of him flipping his commitment. He didn’t mention any possible trips outside of Washington in the interview with Masisak.

The good news here is that a 5-star prospect is still giving Alabama some consideration — even though the chance of him actually attending the school may be slim. He also said Alabama’s young depth chart would not scare him off from being interested in the Tide.

“At the end of the day, anywhere you go there’s going to be competition,” Sirmon said. “I’m never scared away from competition, but at the same time, I’d like to go somewhere where I feel is the best situation and fit for me. Right now, that is at (Washington).”

We’ll see if Sirmon visits Tuscaloosa in the future. Things could get interesting if he does because the communication between him and the Alabama coaching staff is significant. If he was 100 percent locked in with Washington, I don’t think he’d be frequently talking to other schools about recruiting.

Most likely QB in Alabama’s 2018 class

Alabama would like to sign one quarterback in its recruiting cycle this year. The Crimson Tide have three scholarship quarterbacks on the roster now, but four would be ideal. But because of the young depth in Tuscaloosa, we’ve seen several elite quarterbacks not show much interest in Alabama.

There are two possible names to consider at the position, however.

Tanner McKee, 4-star prospect from Centennial High School (Corona, Calif.)

McKee took a recent visit to Alabama and said he can ‘absolutely’ see himself there.

The nation’s No. 7 pro-style quarterback in the Class of 2018 is going to have a unique path. McKee is a devout Mormon. He will do a two-year mission after he graduates from high school. The plan right now is to commit to a school before the year ends, but signing a National Letter of Intent with that university remains an unknown.

Effectively, McKee will be a Class of 2020 prospect. McKee makes sense for Alabama because the depth chart doesn’t really matter to him, unlike the true 2018 prospects.

Jarren Williams, 3-star prospect from Central Gwinnett High School (Lawrenceville, Ga.)

Just a few weeks after picking up an offer from Alabama, Williams decided to de-commit from Kentucky last Monday. He had been committed to Kentucky since June of 2016.

Nick Saban told Williams on his visit to Tuscaloosa earlier this month that he has what he’s looking for in his potential Class of 2018 quarterback. Saban wants a combination of a pro-style passer and a dual-threat quarterback.

That’s what Williams is, according to Central Gwinnett coach Todd Wofford.

“He has all of the physical abilities that Alabama is looking for,” Wofford said. “He’s 6-foot-3 and has a very strong, accurate arm. On top of that, he can run. He’s not an athlete playing quarterback. He’s a quarterback who can pass and who also happens to be athletic enough to run. He has that ‘it’ factor. I think that’s something Nick Saban likes.”

The Alabama staff is expected to visit Williams at Central Gwinnett this spring and evaluate him further. The interest level in Alabama on Williams’ end is very high.

FWIW I don't want either one of these guys.

Myles Mason feels like priority at Auburn

The 4-star cornerback from Pleasant Grove (Ala.) downplays the Iron Bowl recruiting battle.

When asked how tough it would be for an out-of-state school to swoop in: “It wouldn’t be hard,” Mason said. “But I don’t plan on going nowhere far.”

The reality is that neither Auburn nor Alabama will let Mason leave the state. The question remains, however, whether the Crimson Tide are going to make a major push. All 11 Crystal Ball selections for Mason favor Alabama, but it remains to be seen if the Crimson Tide will make an extended effort to add Mason in the class.

That question doesn’t linger with Auburn.

“I feel like a priority a lot,” Mason said. “They’re basically saying that they need me.”

In many senses, that’s true.

Auburn lacks depth at safety in 2017, and that only figures to get worse following the season. Mason is listed as the No. 252 overall prospect and No. 22 safety, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. The Tigers need to add multiple pieces at safety in the 2018 recruiting class, and there is no better place to start than the Birmingham-area prospect.

Auburn has made that point clear.

“They’re telling me that I have a great opportunity to come in and play early,” Mason said. “They’re losing safeties this year, so they’re telling me I have a great opportunity to come in. That’s important.”

He wants to make a decision by this summer.

For now, he doesn’t have any set-in-stone plans to return to Auburn. But he wants to get back before a final decision to continue building on his newfound relationship with Auburn defensive backs coach Greg Brown.

So far?

“It’s been great. His experience in the NFL, it speaks for itself,” Mason said.

Henry was a no-brainer for the Five-Star Challenge and he confirmed that with his performance on Sunday. He has the length, explosiveness and technique to be an instant impact player in college and his athleticism will be a major asset for whichever college he chooses. Henry won reps with speed, hand techniques and countermoves while maintaining his balance and finishing at the quarterback.

Clemson, Ohio State, Georgia, Alabama, Virginia Tech and South Carolina have been doing a great job recruiting Henry but the five-star is taking his time going over his options. Pittsburgh, Penn State, Louisville and Charlotte round out his top 10 but he will be cutting down his list to five this summer. Virginia Tech was Henry’s latest visit and he took trips to Clemson, Georgia and Alabama before that. More visits are in store for Henry. He did mention that Tosh Lupoi from Alabama and Todd Bates from Clemson are working on him the hardest. Henry plans on taking all of his official visits and enrolling early.

It feels like Mitchell’s recruitment has gone on for a very long time. Florida State was his top team for a lengthy stretch but it seems like Ohio State has pulled ahead of the Seminoles. Mitchell will visit Tallahassee again for what feels like the 100th time the weekend of May 12 and a decision could come shortly after that. Clemson, Alabama and LSU round out Mitchell’s top five but they are well behind Florida State and Ohio State. Look for Mitchell, who is trying to be an early enrollee, to cut his list down again before a late May or early June commitment.

Adams has become one of the most sought after wide receivers in the nation but he’s done a good job keeping his recruitment from getting out of control Alabama, LSU, North Carolina, Clemson and Ohio State are his top five but he claims no leader. Adams, who’s last visit was to Ohio State for their spring game, plans on visiting Alabama early in the summer and wants to get back to Clemson before announcing a commitment. All five of these schools are giving him the opportunity to also play baseball. Expect Adams to announce a commitment on or before his birthday on Oct. 18.

Dean is not too far from a decision. He is looking at June announcement right now, but a commitment in May is not out of the question. He still would like to get out to visit UCLA, so that could slow things down if he decides to get that visit in before he commits. Alabama is a school you hear a lot about behind the scenes, with Georgia right there as well. South Carolina had him on campus Saturday and the Gamecocks are right in the thick of this as well. Dean almost committed last year to Florida, so the Gators are not going away, either. He is an early enrollee who wants to put his recruitment behind him this summer.

Crouch’s offer sheet features plenty of big time programs and he is working on sorting things out. Ohio State is his newest offer and he plans on visiting the Buckeyes in the summer along with Michigan and Alabama. Some of his recent visits include Clemson, South Carolina and Georgia. He is very comfortable at all three of those schools and plans on returning. Schools with a strong tradition of developing running backs will get a close look from Crouch.
