Defensive Line
• Five-star defensive tackle Derrick Brown continues to win his reps, goes about his business, tremendous first step.
• Battling with the five-star Kraemer, Top50 defensive end Jeffery Simmons won his fair share of reps, a strong player at the point of attack. This was a day for both of them that definitely makes you better.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Tuesday's practice at the Army Bowl for the West team was not a very active day. There was a lot of teach and install periods and limited opportunities to compete offense vs. defense. Though the opportunities were limited, a few players still stood out.

Superlatives
Defensive line
We saw some flash out of UCLA commit Breland Brandt on Tuesday. Though he comes from a background that doesn't face elite competition, Brandt seems to be adjusting well to the All-American setting and his frame and length are outstanding.
Alabama commit Raekwon Davis remains a force when he's motivated. His size is something that a lot of offensive linemen in college will never have to deal with. He's massive and he looks like he enjoys being out there competing, which is half the battle when you're that talented.
Defensive end Mark Jackson Jr. had another strong performance on day two. He picked up a sack during 11-on-11 and even forced a fumble. His relentless effort when rushing the passer stood out.

Apparently he is trying to decide who to visit on the 15th.

… Expectations were high for five-star wide receiver Demetris Robertson, but he more than delivered. He has elite speed. He comfortably won the 40-yard dash race between he and the rest of the wide receivers. He has the type of speed similar to what Will Fuller brought to the table. He had a few drops on the day, but for the majority, he was outstanding in all facets of the game.

SAN ANTONIO – Two days of practices are in the books at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl so it’s a good time to start making some prospect comparisons to current college or NFL players:
quote:
DE Jeffery Simmons, Macon (Miss.) Noxubee County
Comparison: New York Jets defensive end Leonard Williams, who starred at USC and was rated as the fifth-best strong-side defensive end in the 2012 class out of Daytona Beach (Fla.) Mainland.
Overview: Williams is over 300 pounds in the NFL but at the same stage, Simmons and Williams have almost identical physical stats and they both have thick lower bodies. Simmons, rated fourth at strong-side defensive end in the 2016 class, is a tough, physical, hard-nosed defensive end who lives in the backfield. He overpowers offensive linemen and also has the athleticism to get to the edge. Wherever Simmons ends up for college he has the skills to dominate.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Practices for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl continued Tuesday and the second session featured a number of standout performances. Here is a look at who excelled and who stumbled for the West team at Blossom Athletic Center.

7. TE Devin Asiasi, Concord (Calif.) De La Salle
Recruiting wrap: Asiasi has visited UCLA and has trips lined up with Washington (Jan. 15), Alabama (Jan. 22) and USC (Jan. 29) before National Signing Day.
Performance: For as big as he is, Asiasi moves incredibly well down field and looks fluid through his breaks. The 6-foot-5, 253-pound prospect has gotten looks at defensive end but he would be more than capable of lining up at tight end. Asiasi has soft hands and, despite his size, finds a way to get open against linebackers.

SAN ANTONIO – With Army All-American Bowl practice No. 2 in the books, some prospects stepped up their game, some bounced back from poor performances and some looked out of place. Here is a look at who did well and not so well on day two from the East team.

4. DT Derrick Brown, Sugar Hill (Ga.) Lanier
Recruiting wrap: Tennessee, Auburn and Georgia are Brown’s top contenders. He is taking official visits to all three of those schools later this month.
Performance: Brown, like Lawrence, set up camp in the offense’s backfield. He is way too quick at the snap for the interior offensive lineman. During team drills, Brown was a major factor and the offense had no answer for him, especially when Lawrence was also in on the play.

quote:
5. ATH Mecole Hardman Jr., Bowman (Ga.) Elbert County
Recruiting Wrap: Hardman named Alabama his leader this week. He may take an official visit there on Jan. 15 and has another planned to TCU on Jan. 22.
Performance: Hardman worked at defensive back during the first day of East team practices, but transitioned to wide receiver Tuesday and was immediately the most explosive player in the receiver corps. The five-star is most effective on quick passes where he can rack up yards after catch, but he also made a great catch along the sideline on a go route with defensive backs in close trail position.

So Demetris Robertson was the Top Performer from today's practices by 247, yet didn't even make the Top 10 for Rivals.

Here is a look at 10 players who had a great showing during the Under Armour All-America week and five who struggled.

TEN UP (listed alphabetically)
quote:
WR A.J. Brown, Starkville, Miss.
Recruiting: Mississippi State, Ole Miss and others are heavily involved.
Overview: Brown has a thick build and doesn’t have elite speed but he’s an excellent route runner, can create space against cornerbacks, can muscle smaller corners and he earned the nickname “Venus Flytrap” during Under Armour week because he never, ever drops a pass. Wherever Brown ends up, he can be counted on to catch tough passes and move the ball.

RB B.J. Emmons, Morganton (N.C.) Freedom
Recruiting: Emmons is committed to Alabama.
Overview: Quick to the hole and then with an impressive burst of speed, Emmons has the ability to churn out yards or break into the open field for big gainers. The four-star doesn’t do a lot of dancing and dillydallying in the backfield, but times up his blocks perfectly and always seems to find open space. Emmons is not just straight-line speed, though. He can shake an oncoming defender and showed a nice spin move in the game.

quote:
LB Dontavious Jackson, Houston (Texas) Elsik
Recruiting: Johnson has taken official visits to UCLA, Michigan and Florida State and he will see Florida and Alabama soon. Texas, LSU and others are also involved.
Overview: Jackson is a big, physical linebacker who is well-put-together and it’s hard to find pure inside linebackers who can fight through traffic so easily, square up and make the tackle. In the game, Jackson was excellent coming off blocks and making plays. He was all over the place, has great athletic ability and is super active.

DT Kendell Jones, Killeen (Texas) Shoemaker
Recruiting: Jones is committed to Alabama.
Overview: Jones is a massive human being, one of the biggest Rivals.com National Recruiting Director Mike Farrell can remember in nearly two decades of scouting. At 6-foot-5 and 361 pounds, Jones has such thick legs and a wide body that he takes up so much space. But he’s almost too big to be counted on every down and it seems like he struggles with injuries because his body cannot take the pounding.

Expected to visit in late Jan. Someone I trust is saying a Bama/USCw battle.

I'll add that the Kongbo decommitment has been coming for weeks. Didn't really have anything to do with the USCw offer, but they're in the running. Rodney Orr, who is far from a sunshine pumper, has been hinting at a decommitment for a while, and thinks we have an excellent shot.
