Army Bowl: East top performers day one
quote:
Alpha Dog
Do we have a candidate for No. 1? We've seen No. 1 players in San Antonio before and Clemson commit Dexter Lawrence had that kind of presence on the first day of practice for the East. Lawrence smoked the other defensive tackles in a 40-yard dash and looked downright speedy doing it. During 11on11 and one-on-ones he was dominant. Offensive linemen couldn't handle his blend of physicality and agility. Lawrence is special.

Next five defense
1. DB, Jamel Cook – Not only was Jamel Cook one of the more active defensive abcks in getting involved in the run game during the scrimmage period but he put together a near perfect 1on1 session winning ll four of his reps. He's 6-foot-4 but Cook has cornerback hips.
2. DT, Derrick Brown – As big as Derrick Brown is, it was his quickness that was really on display on Monday, particularly during 1on1s. When you're an offensive lineman trying to deal with that kind of punch, it's almost unfair for Brown to show the feet and agility that he put on display.
3. DE, Brian Burns – We love the way Burns battled at defensive end. He's so long and fast off the edge but the kid plays with energy and effort on every play. He's eager to learn. Though he's still raw, still filling out, his length and the speed with which he plays makes him scary good.
4. DT, Antwuan Jackson – The East defensive line coach was fired up to coach Jackson all day because the kid continued to make big plays during scrimmage periods. Though he's not as big as some of the other defensive linemen, Jackson has a huge lower body and incredible instincts.
5. DB, Jordan Fuller – A versatile defensive back, Fuller may project as a safety on the next level but he's been working primarily at cornerback this week and he was the second best defender during 1on1s. A big, cerebral player that looks like he wants to be out there, Fuller has the complete package.

Top Five offense
1. QB, Jacob Eason – Eason and Feleipe Franks are both extremely talented passers. Eason was the better of the two when a defense was added to the equation. He is effortless with every throw but where he's most impressive is when he's rifling balls on intermediate routes.
2. WR, Austin Mack - We almost left Austin Mack off of the Top 5 because he did have several drops on easy passes but wow did he make up for it with some spectacular grabs. He had a one-handed catch on air that was Odell Beckhamish and he had a catch during 7on7 that nearly caused the head coach to shut down practice. He's a huge big-play threat.
3. OT, Tommy Kraemer – The offensive line has a tough task this week with a loaded East defensive front but Kraemer was the best of the bunch on Monday. He held his own on during 1on1s and he's got the size to absorb the big East defensive linemen and still maintain the balance and punch to keep his quarterback safe.
4. WR, Demetris Robertson – Robertson looked like the fastest, most sudden, explosive receiver in attendance. He got behind the defense on a consistent basis and when the entire group raced in a 40-yard dash, Robertson cruised to a win.
5. OG, John Simpson – On the offensive line, versatility is huge and Simpson has shown that he legitimately can play any position on the offensive line. He's long and athletic enough to play tackle. He's listed as a guard and on Monday, he transitioned to center to add depth as well.

Superlatives
Quarterbacks
Five-star quarterback Jacob Eason was the top guy today. He looked ready to step on Georgia's campus and compete at the highest level upon arrival. His arm talent is second to none and he showed that on day one with some terrific throws.
Four-star quarterback Feleipe Franks was terrific when it came to the deep balls, but struggled on occasion with the intermediate throws. He displayed a live arm and the raw tools to contribute immediately at Florida, but also showed that work needs to be done in terms of overall accuracy and ball placement.
Four-star quarterback Jawon Pass had a solid day, but wasn't on the level of his two teammates. If he wasn't playing alongside the others, Pass' struggles wouldn't be so evident. All that said, the Louisville commit was clearly the best athlete of the group and will be a major threat at the next level with his arm and legs.
Running backs
-Buckeyes commit Demario McCall of North Ridgeville (Oh.), who measured in at 5-foot-9, 171 pounds, was the smallest of the backs but arguably the most impressive in the group. Two things stood out. 1. His quickness; 2. His ability to run sound routes and catch the ball.
Wide receiver/Tight Ends
Buckeye tight end pledge Jake Hausmann put up a solid performance. The 6-foot-4.5, 230-pound Cincinnati (Ohio) Moeller product was consistent through the two practice sessions. He proved to be a sure handed target that has a knack for getting open.
The other tight end for the East squad, Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy’s Isaac Nauta, also had a sound performance. The 6-foot-3, 244-pounder excelled during the one-on-one portion of the practice.
Wellington (Fla.) wide receiver Ahmmon Richards proved to have long speed on go routes. The 6-foot-1, 171-pound prospect was smooth running routes. Richards’ highlight play came during seven-on-seven he went over the top of corner Jordan Fuller for a great catch along the sidelines.
Another south Florida product, Binjimen Victor out of Pompano Beach (Fla.) Coconut Creek had a very solid and consistent day getting open, making catches and uses his long 6-4 frame to his advantage against smaller defensive backs.
Offensive line
While Kraemer and Simpson were the top two offensive line performers, Ben Cleveland had his moments. He may be a big guard on the next level and he's still really raw and inexperienced in his pass sets but he's so athletic with such an impressive frame that he has a chance to be really good on the next level as he gets coached up.

Defensive line
Florida State commit Janarius Robinson struggles some in 1on1s when he asked to display an array of pass rush moves but when he's in an 11on11 setting and can just use his instincts, chase down backs and show off his physicality, Robinson was actually really good on Monday. He may be a redshirt candidate in Tallahassee but the upside is immense.
Maybe the big guy overall in the DL group at times, Powder Springs (Ga.) McEachern DT Julian Rochester just used his big 6-foot-5, 325 pound frame to bull rush defenders. That's his bread and butter and he embraced it on Monday.
Linebackers
-Michigan State commit Brandon Randle of Battle Creek (Mi.) not only has the best frame and build among the backers on the east squad, he also had the best practices. Covering a lot of ground and looking strong in coverage, Randle stuck to the backs on their routes and even had a pick.
-Minnesota commit Carter Coughlin of Eden Prairie (Mn.) is a big framed backer (he’s 6-foot-2.75, 215 pounds) who probably was the most instinctive player in the group. His eyes zeroed in on the quarterback as he fluidly backpedaled and roamed his turf while playing both outside backer positions. He often made his move to the correct player and/or zone before the ball was even in the air.
Defensive back
Warner Robins (Ga.) cornerback Marquez Callaway flashed elite coverage skills. The 6-foot-1, 177-pound prospect used his length to his advantage. Callaway has battled which side of the ball he would ultimately play, but he appears to have a ton of upside on defense after the first practice.
Elberton (Ga.) Elbert County corner Mecole Hardman looked very smooth going through defensive back drills. The 5-foot-10, 169-pound prospect is another that could play either side of the ball, but he prefers defense at this time.

There aren't as many Bama targets on the West squad as there are on the East so I won't post this entire article. But here is the West Top Performers:

Defensive Line
Top100 defensive tackle and Alabama commit Raekwon Davis may not be the heaviest (Onwenu), but he is the largest prospect in San Antonio. Very strong, Davis is also really good with his hands.

1. Demetris Robertson: 6-1/165, Athlete, Savannah (GA) Christian Prep
-Notre Dame is still a major, major player in this recruitment. Robertson is very high on the Irish and everything the university can do for him as a student-athlete. Gem. Could play on either side of the ball. Gamechanger. Loy believes it is either Notre Dame or Stanford, but saying no to Georgia and Alabama will be difficult. Wait and see.

Some of the top uncommitted prospects in the state of Georgia are in San Antonio for the Army All-American Game and on Monday they spoke with Rivals.com about their recruiting futures. Here’s a rundown of where things stand and where we think they’re headed with the Peach State stars.
quote:
DT Derrick Brown, Sugar Hill (Ga.) Lanier
Latest: Despite being one of the Southeast’s most sought-after prospects, Brown has tried his hardest to keep a low profile during the dead period. On Monday he said he remains focused on a group of five schools, Alabama, Mississippi State, Auburn, Georgia and Tennessee. He already has officials in the books to the Tide and the Mississippi State and will visit the remaining three once the dead period ends later this month. Most assume Georgia is still the likely destination, but Alabama has made a move since landing Jeremy Pruitt, while Tennessee and Mississippi State are also real factors.
In his words: “I talk to Tennessee every day. I talk to four or five different coaches on the staff, including coach Jones, they’re all recruiting me. I love the Tennessee coaching staff.”
Prediction: Tennessee. Brown is very tough to read but the Vols seem to have real momentum and getting the last official visit is huge.

ATH Demetris Robertson, Savannah (Ga.) Christian
Latest: Robertson has already taken official visits to California and Notre Dame and said he’s focused on three official visits after the dead period, with Alabama, Georgia and Stanford on the schedule. Robertson has long referred to the Cardinal as his dream school, but has yet to achieve the SAT score required for admission and said he’s slated to take it one more time before Signing Day. The longer it plays out the more it looks like it’s an Alabama-Georgia battle for Robertson. He said on Monday that his twin sister is set to enroll at Alabama for the spring semester and he has said several times the two are likely to attend the same program in college.
In his words: “My mom hasn’t even been on a visit yet so she’s definitely going on my local visits to Alabama and Georgia and those types. She can’t really get out there that far but she’s going to those schools because she really wants to see them. If she’s really impressed then I’ll make the decision.”
Prediction: Alabama. Despite backing off commitment from Alabama the Tide have remained very much involved. Nick Saban personally handles Robertson recruitment and he is pitching the chance for Robertson to be another dynamic wide receiver in the vein of Amari Cooper and Calvin Ridley.
Did anyone else know that his sister is enrolling at Alabama?!!!!!!!

ATH Mecole Hardman, Bowman (Ga.) Elbert County
Latest: The dynamic five-star athlete named Alabama as his leader on Sunday, a move that caught many by surprise, especially considering his affinity for nearby Georgia. Following the dead period Hardman is planning on take official visit to TCU and said he’s still debating on whether he will take an official visit to Alabama or Tennessee. Hardman’s twists and turns have kept people guessing, but if he makes an official to the Tide it could be telling when it comes to his recruitment.
In his words: “They stand out to me the most so why not name them a leader. They’re one of the top schools I’m looking at and coach Pruitt is there now and everything so that’s a boost for them.”
Prediction: Georgia. Hardman is good at playing the recruiting game, but Georgia is still the school to the beat and the most likely destination.

There's no one on our radar that made this list either way. I just thought I would post it in case anyone wanted to read it.

SAN ANTONIO -- All of the hype leading into the U.S. Army All-American Bowl took a back seat on Monday when the players finally took the field for the first practice of the week. Some players proved they were worth the hype while some others could have played better.
This list is not guaranteed to affect future changes in rankings. It only reflects one day of practice.

3. DT Derrick Brown, Sugar Hill (Ga.) Lanier
Recruiting Wrap: Tennessee, Auburn and Georgia are Brown’s top contenders. He is taking official visits to all three of those schools later this month.
Performance: Brown’s performance during the season was inconsistent but he really stepped it up for practice on Monday. He has a great first step out of his stance and has the strength to brush offensive linemen to the side. Brown was also very effective during team drills and had a few tackles for a loss.
