Here's a reminder, as if you needed one: College football is unpredictable. That makes this sport, however bass-ackwards it may be at times with the way it's operated, so much fun.
Right now, we're missing out on the fun. Week 1 of the 2015 season is still more than three full months away. It's times like these that we feed the itch by looking back at some of the best moments from the game.
Or, in this case, the games themselves. That's how this topic was born. Ranking all-time games is always a challenge, but we feel we have a healthy mixture of older and newer games, shootouts and defensive struggles, nail-biters, comebacks and improbable finishes. From regular-season games to national championships, everything was under consideration.
Here are, according to us, the best games in the history of college football—which will undoubtedly be universally agreed upon by everyone, right? Right.

9. Alabama 14, Penn State 7
Jan. 1, 1979
One of the best goal-line stands in the history of college football came on one of the biggest stages.
The 1979 Sugar Bowl between Alabama and Penn State, the top two teams in the country, was a defensive struggle. Appropriately, the Tide won the game on a heroic goal-line stand against the Nittany Lions' rushing attack.
Legendary play-by-play announcer Keith Jackson had the famous call, via ESPN.com: "Fourth down and a foot separating top-ranked Penn State from a possible national championship. Fusina hands to Guman. He didn't make it! He didn't make it! What an unbelievable goal-line stand by Alabama!"
Two storied programs, one defining series. The '79 Sugar Bowl is considered one of the best bowl games of all time.

2. Auburn 34, Alabama 28
Nov. 30, 2013
Auburn's luck almost knew no bounds in 2013—and that's not meant in a negative way. A team can be both good and have things fall into place. The Tigers were just more dramatic about it all.
No moment was more dramatic for Auburn during its '13 national championship game run than the Iron Bowl against Alabama in what is now known as the "Kick-Six" game. Down 21-7 at one point in the second quarter, Auburn made a thrilling comeback and eventually traded touchdowns with the Tide to lock things in at 28 with less than one minute remaining.
Alabama running back T.J. Yeldon took what looked like the final play of regulation out of bounds, but head coach Nick Saban pushed to have one second on the clock so that he could attempt a game-winning field goal. He got his wish but not the result he wanted. Adam Griffith's 57-yard field goal fell short and into the arms of Auburn's Chris Davis, who was waiting in the end zone. Davis returned the kick 100-plus yards the other way to give Auburn the amazing 34-28 win.

SEC: Alabama
2014 was a success and a disappointment in Tuscaloosa. Alabama finished with an SEC title, a 12-2 record and a berth in the inaugural College Football Playoff, but a Sugar Bowl loss to Ohio State meant the Crimson Tide finished short of its ultimate goal: a national championship. With three national titles under Nick Saban’s watch, nothing less is acceptable.
Saban certainly isn't satisfied. In a recent stop of the Crimson Caravan in Huntsville, he said the Tide needs to get its mojo back, per the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
"We need to get our mojo back ... we need into get our identity back," Saban said. We used to be a team nobody wanted to play," he explained. "We've had a few distractions with the last couple years that I think have affected how we've finished the season."
This will be something of a transition year for Saban, with only nine starters returning and stars like wide receiver Amari Cooper, tailback T.J. Yeldon and safety Landon Collins all declaring early for the NFL. But Alabama doesn’t rebuild. It reloads. The Tide has consistently recruited well, and now those players must step into bigger roles.
Tailback Derrick Henry will be one of the nation’s top tailbacks, with a special blend of speed and physicality. Senior Jake Coker leads a group of five quarterbacks competing to replace Blake Sims, but doesn’t have the job locked down yet. With an SEC slate that features road trips to Georgia, Mississippi State, Texas A&M and Auburn, it won’t be easy, but the Tide has the talent to win the SEC again.

In just 15 (!!!) short weeks, the 2015 college football season will be upon us, and it won't waste any time getting to the good stuff thanks to a whopper of an opening-week lineup.
Now that almost every power program has seemed to buy in to the importance of lining up quality out-of-league competition, the weeks before conference play gets into full swing are no longer reserved for just walkover games. Nearly every team from a power conference has at least one nonconference game that has some level of difficulty to it, and in many cases, these contests are toss-ups that could go either way.
Here's a look at the toughest nonconference game that every team from the ACC, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-12 and SEC (as well as Notre Dame) has on its 2015 schedule.

Alabama
Sept. 5 vs. Wisconsin (in Arlington, Texas)
While Alabama might not show much interest in playing a true nonconference road game—its last one was in 2011, and none are set for future seasons—it isn't shy about lining up quality neutral-site matchups for its season opener. This year is no different, as the Crimson Tide will open with a power-league foe for the fourth straight year.
The Tide have previously opened with Michigan, Virginia Tech and West Virginia the last three seasons, and next year they will play USC in Arlington.
Last year's win over West Virginia was closer than expected, but Alabama was breaking in a new quarterback. The same could be the case this year, as an untested passer will be going up against a Wisconsin team that brings back eight starters on defense but also will be without 2,500-yard rusher Melvin Gordon.

Bone says Charles Baldwin is the top JUCO OT on the board. Apparently something was posted on a message board that pissed him off:
I don't know what he's talking about.
quote:
Baldwin has not tried to commit, and Alabama will certainly accept it if he decides to commit.
There has been damage control from Alabama's staff because a post made its way to a prospect. Baldwin is Alabama's top JuCo OL target. All three JuCo prospects are high on Alabama's board, and the order is Baldwin, Leavitt and Bolles.
I don't know what he's talking about.

Now Bone is saying Willie Allen needs to attend camp to have a committable offer. Talk about a change of events with him.
Posted on 5/21/15 at 11:13 am to TideSaint
If I'm reading it right it sounds like Jauan Williams has to attend camp as well.

Bone expects Kendell Jones to be Alabama's next commitment.
He announces tomorrow.

Bone thinks Alabama is the best bet to land Jaquan Yulee on the 4th.
Posted on 5/21/15 at 11:15 am to TideSaint
Things could change. They already have at least once. But as of now, it's unlikely we'll be signing Willie.

Bone said we would accept commitments from both Yulee and Erroll Thompson if they decide to commit.
I guess the Tre Lamar ship has sailed.

Shawn Jennings has a spot if he wants to commit. He does not have to come to camp according to Bone.

Bone thinks the 3 WRs with the best chance to be in this class are AJ Brown, Mykel Jones and Dillon Mitchell (Oregon commit).

Bone on Trevon Diggs:

Alabama feels very good at this point with Davis and Wilson. Alabama has done a great job recruiting both prospects. Both have said Alabama is recruiting them the hardest.

According to Bone some people believe Alabama leads for Rashan Gary, while others think Michigan because of his coach being hired there.
He will visit next month.
