Scouting Report: Chris Owens – 2016 Guard

It never stops with Alabama. After an unbelievable haul of interior line talent last cycle they have kept it going with more additions this year like Lamar High’s (Arlington, Texas) Chris Owens.
He has the kind of athleticism offensive line coaches dream of working with in an NFL frame. He’s another terrific pickup for the Tide that will ensure they don’t stop running the ball well any time soon.
Height: 6’4?
Weight: 312
Athletic ability/measurables
Owens is a great athlete for his size and moves extremely well. He has good enough feet to play the tackle position and has the length for it too. He has gotten bigger since the end of his junior season, but still has quite a bit of developing to do physically. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him play at 320 plus quite comfortably at Alabama.
Skills/technique
I love the way Owens moves for a big man. He shows great feet and reaches on the edge with ease and gets to the second level better than just about any lineman at the high school level regardless of size. When you factor in size into it though, it’s truly impressive. The way he gets down the field on screens, locates, then fits his block is outstanding.
He works to finish and has some nasty where he will put a defender on his arse if he gets the chance. He would probably be able to do that a lot more if he kept his pad level down all the time, but it has more to do with his lack of power. He doesn’t get that hip snap on contact because his strength hasn’t quite caught up to his size yet. When it does, look out.
He has all of the tools to be a dominant player in pass protection, but has some things he needs to improve on at the next level. He will sometimes cross his feet when he faces speed to his outside or will get his feet to close together and be unbalanced. It’s a bad habit that he needs to fix. He will use his length well, but needs to improve his timing of his punch and not overextend as well. When he doesn’t, he can pretty much lock out a pass rusher with no issue.
Scheme fit
I think he could play right tackle or guard in the Tide’s scheme. He’s athletic to be effective in just about any role they require of him for their offense.
Potential
Owens has the potential to be an outstanding player at the next level. I think he could develop into an all-SEC player at guard for the Tide or a solid starter at right tackle. The only issue is that he will have to battle so many other top players to see the field. I imagine that he’ll find a way though and will likely start for Alabama for multiple seasons.

Scouting report on Jonah Williams:

Scouting Report: Jonah Williams – 2016 Offensive Tackle
POSTED ON APRIL 5, 2015 BY JAMIE UYEYAMA

Not shocking, but Alabama had an awesome offensive line class last year. The only problem with it was that there was a surplus of elite interior linemen and it lacked a big time offensive tackle prospect.
That’s not going to be an issue with their 2016 class after landing Jonah Williams, one of the top offensive tackle recruits in the nation. The Folsom, California native is going to be a really good one for the Tide in the SEC.
Height: 6’5?
Weight: 280
Athletic ability/measurables
Williams is a very good athlete for the position. He has great feet and moves really well. He has the frame to easily get to over 300 pounds while in college. He still has a lot of maturing to do physically.
Skills/technique
So much of what makes Williams a great prospect is the way he moves. He does an outstanding job of getting out to the second level and locking up with linebackers. He gets himself into a great position and fits his block very well. He reaches on the edge and takes zone steps fluidly.
He generates a consistent, violent pop on contact and gets good hand placement. He finishes blocks and will drive defenders to the echo of the whistle. He will also look for more work if his block is already made. He has an edge to his game.
His feet and balance in his pass set are outstanding. He is a natural knee bender. He passes off blocks and picks up blitzes like someone who is far more advanced in age. He delivers a great punch and is so effective with it because of the timing of his punch. It’s controlled violence that he uses at the appropriate times.
Scheme fit
He’s going to be a great fit in Alabama’s offense and should be a candidate to play left tackle, but also has should have the versatility to move to guard.
Potential
It’s going to be frightening for players matching up against Williams once he physically matures. He is advanced in his technique and has a nasty mentality to his game that should allow him to compete early in his career once he is physically ready to handle SEC defenders. He has the talent to develop into an All-SEC caliber lineman during his time in Tuscaloosa.

4-star OL Deonte Brown excited about Alabama commitment, senior season

At first glance, Austin offensive guard Deonte Brown is an imposing figure. At 6-foot-4 and 350-pounds, he could already pass for a college lineman, but the rising senior's easy smile, graceful movement and articulate speech reveal a gifted athlete.
Brown announced April 29 that he had verbally committed to Alabama. Brown is a four-star recruit, according to 247sports' composite ratings, and the site ranks him as the nation's No. 7 guard and the the state's No. 7 player for the class of 2016.
Tennessee coaches offered Brown last fall. Since then Brown has received offers from Louisville, Mississippi State and Troy. Auburn offensive line coach J.B. Grimes has visited Brown, but the Tigers have not extended an offer.
"Deonte visited Alabama three times this spring and felt very comfortable," Austin coach Jeremy Perkins said. "Deonte's not into the dramatics and putting on show to make a verbal commitment announcement. It was a weight lifted off of him when he made the decision."
Alabama assistant coaches Mario Cristobal and Melvin Tucker were the primary recruiting contacts. Brown said he did not want to wait to announce his choice of schools.
"The reason I decided to announce early was I didn't want that burden to choose a college hanging over my head," Brown explained before the Black Bears' spring game against Sparkman on Thursday night. "I liked Alabama from the beginning and I decided 'why wait?' and go ahead and commit. The school is in close proximity to home so my family can come see me play. Plus their athletic complex and academic support program is top notch.
"I really liked coach Cristobal. He's a very good coach and he loves his offensive lineman. I believe I can learn a lot from him in college. Coach (Nick) Saban is very cool and laid back. He is straight forward in his approach, doesn't beat-around-the-bush and is a very business-oriented person. I am fully committed to Alabama."
Recruiting services give Brown high marks for his size, agility, run blocking and pass protection skills. Perkins believes he has several other intangibles that will make him a success at the college level.
"Deonte's very athletic and has great feet to weigh 350 pounds," Perkins said. "But one is his biggest assets is he is so flexible. He can bend so well. Most guys that size can't touch their toes. He bends like a 180-pound man.
"We have moved him inside this spring to guard. Deonte can play either tackle or guard. He's not as long as some college coaches desire in tackles. But he comes with bad intentions. He is aggressive, sometimes too aggressive. But we want our offensive lineman to be nasty."
Both Brown and Perkins are dedicated to erasing the memory of last year's losing season. Austin's 2-8 record was deceiving since the Black Bears lost five games by a combined 22 points to Spain Park, Florence, Cullman, Decatur and Buckhorn.
"We were so close to winning several games last season so we just want to get over the hump," Brown said. "We can go as far as our talent will let us. I believe we're a playoff team."
Perkins said last year's team was inconsistent.
"We were up and down," Perkins said. "At times we were as good as anyone out there, and then there were times we couldn't do anything right. You look at our record and it appears we are a distant way from where we want to be, but we were one play away from beating Florence, the region champion. Then, we were a fumbled punt away from beating Spain Park. We open our season against Spain Park at home August 21 and I believe we'll be much improved."
Brown will certainly be a part of that improvement.

Louisville looks like a strong favorite for Tennessee QB Tylin Oden, who commits on Memorial Day.
Mississippi State and WVU also in mix.
I wonder if this pickup reflects their confidence level on landing Pass. Here is his 247 profile for those who are wondering LINK

I was reading up on Haskins announcement, and he reiterated then that Trevon Diggs and him are a package deal.

QB Tylin Oden
Apparently he cancelled his visit to Miss St, so it definitely looks like he is Louisville bound. That will make two of Pass's top four schools already having a qb committed.

A post from the Louisville mod on Pass's recruitment. He mad.
quote:
I think what you have here in this case is a good ole fashion Alabama-Auburn recruiting war. Pass goes to Auburn for their spring game, says the Tigers are atop his list. Then sources close to him come out with Alabama leading the way and his whole entourage is preparing for a visit right before he's hinting an announcement.
I don't have to spell it out do I. You guys have watched SEC recruiting for years. You remember the stories about Cam Newton and his father? You've heard all the things about Nick Saban?
And then there's Louisville, trying everything possible, including taking his older brother, to leverage him away from those SEC West rivals. Hell, Louisville seemed willing to take a teammate or two who may or may not be good enough to entice Pass.
I have always thought Alabama and Auburn would be tough to beat for Pass when rubber meets the road. Louisville is best positioned, imo, to sneak him out of Georgia but I haven't liked how this one has been trending the past few months -- visit to Auburn, upcoming visit to Alabama, etc. Remember, Pass told me he would attend UofL's spring game, but went to Auburn's instead.

Yeah, me too. I just don't think Pass will be a solid enough commit to depend on him recruiting other players. Plus, Georgia kids gonna Georgia?

The Louisville mod said that they will only take on qb, and it looks like Tylin Oden is that guy (for now.) Of course, I wouldn't put it past Petrino to tell this kid that he is the only quarterback they are after while still pursuing Pass.

I think he is gonna be another "Xavier Lee" type player. Killer measurables but a below average college QB.
