9. DE Mekhi Brown
Columbus (Ga.) Carver

There have been questions about Mekhi Brown, but he put together a very solid effort on the big stage. He showed some nice quickness off the edge and he was able to get some nice pressure in the West offensive backfield. The Alabama commit finished the day with two solo tackles, two assists, and 0.5 tackles for loss.

Team Armour defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick's goal this week was to build relationships and not focus on his decision. He is committed to Alabama, but continues to research other schools.

"I had a lot of fun talking with all the different guys. I'm still very interested in Florida State, but I'm also committed to Alabama," he said. "I'm just researching everything still. I have a great deal of trust in Coach (Charles) Kelly and what they are doing there at FSU."

3. DE Byron Cowart
Seffner (Fla.) Armwood

Cowart came into the game with hopes of setting the all-time sack record. While he didn't exactly have that dominant of a performance, it was still a remarkable night for the nation's No. 3 overall player. Cowart has so much speed and power coming off the edge that he can be unblockable at times. He finished the game with four total tackles, a sack and a pass deflection that led to an interception. Cowart was awarded Team Highlight MVP honors for his efforts.

7. DT Daron Payne
Birmingham (Ala.) Shades Valley

On the night when he announced his commitment to Alabama, Payne turned in another excellent performance. After struggling at times at marquee events in the past, Payne thrived in a full-contact, fully padded environment. He made several plays up the middle and generally caused disruptions, something he will be asked to do on a regular basis at the next level. Payne plays with great leverage and should be an ideal fit in the Crimson Tide's scheme.

Gladewater, Texas, defensive tackle Daylon Mack came to play and he was not messing around at all.
The four-star standout who had been committed to Texas A&M but recently reopened his recruitment, dominated up the middle and had five tackles in the first half. Mack, a 6-foot, 322-pound brute, made the Team Highlight interior offensive linemen look like rag dolls as he stuffed runs and made numerous stops.

Mack wasn't the only d-lineman who stood out. Four-star Christian Wilkins from Suffield (Conn.) Suffield Academy had one of the best plays in recent Under Armour game memory when he blocked an extra point and then scooped it up and rumbled about 92 yards for two points. He also had numerous tackles and was getting into the backfield almost at will.

Five-stars Byron Cowart from Seffner (Fla.) Armwood and Daron Payne, who committed to Alabama at the game, along with four-star Terry Beckner Jr. from East St. Louis, Ill., all made impressive plays.

To be fair, the interior offensive linemen struggled all week for both teams, but Mack and Wilkins really made it happen at game time.

Cowart had a phenomenal week in practice and he continued to deliver in the Under Armour game. Is he the top player in this class? The five-star defensive end applies constant pressure on the edge and he has quick moves to the inside as well. Cowart, formerly the No. 1 player before quarterback Josh Rosen (injured for the UA game) took over, was on a mission to regain his status.
Cowart did everything possible to move up again. The Armwood prospect finished with four tackles, including one sack and he hurried the Armour quarterbacks all night. He's so aggressive and so relentless and after a while, the offensive line cracked.

All week during practices, both teams worked on kickoffs and punts seemingly for an inordinate amount of time. It apparently paid off as there were two big touchdown returns in the first half -- one for each squad.
Former Alabama commit Daylon Charlot from Patterson, La., bobbled a punt but then gathered himself, found a hole and he was off to the races on a 53-yard score.

For Team Armour, Ohio State pledge Eric Glover-Williams would not be outdone. Later in the second quarter, the Canton (Ohio) McKinley recruit returned a punt 47 yards for Armour's only score.

And as far as kickers go, Notre Dame is getting a good one. Milton (Mass.) Milton Academy's Justin Yoon booted field goals of 32, 31 and 47 yards, all in the first half.

Ronald Jones II made news even before the Under Armour game started.
The four-star running back from McKinney (Texas) McKinney North committed to USC over Notre Dame prior to kickoff after being pegged to Oklahoma State for months.

Then in the first quarter, Jones ripped off a 58-yard touchdown run where he got to the edge right by Oregon DE commit Canton Kaumatule, slipped a tackle by linebacker Adonis Thomas and then sprinted by everybody else to the end zone.

The McKinney North standout had the best individual run for the touchdown, but some other backs also had strong showings.

Five-star Damien Harris (top three of Alabama, Kentucky and Ohio State) finished with a game-high 110 yards on 16 carries and was steady all night. Late in the game, Harris had a phenomenal run where he put his foot in the ground, confused a linebacker and ran in for a 36-yard score.

On a reverse, Clemson pledge Ray-Ray McCloud III ran for 38 yards. The Team Armour backs were held in check because of Highlight's dominant defensive line.

ORLANDO, Florida -- Fifty of the top 2016 and 2017 prospects in the country gathered at the ESPN Wide World of Sports for the Elite 50 Experience presented by Under Armour. The top players on the defensive side of the ball from the camp are listed below.

quote:

1. DE Marlon Davidson
Montgomery (Ala.) Carver

Davidson is a huge end with great explosiveness. He had a really good cross over move, extends arms well and is very hard to knock off balance. One on play Davidson faked outside and went inside before flattening out and heading straight to the quarterback. One of the most impressive things about Davidson's game is how he plays so low to the ground and can get skinny to fit through the smallest holes. Alabama, Georgia and Auburn are leading for Davidson.

2. LB Ben Davis
Gordo (Ala.)

Davis is one of the most physically impressive linebackers in the country. As big as he is, Davis moved well in the open field and was especially good against deep routes. Davis intercepted one pass and broke up another against seam routes. Alabama and Auburn are in the mix for Davis.

5. LB Lyndell Wilson
Montgomery (Ala.) Carver

Wilson was one of the thickest linebackers but still moved very well. His best play came when a tight end was running a seam route and he jumped up and knocked down the ball. Wilson also made a couple athletic plays when covering out routes. Alabama, Auburn and Georgia are near the top of Wilson's list.

6. DB Trayvon Mullen
Coconut Creek (Fla.)

Mullen's length really gave quarterbacks and wide receivers problems. He was also good at being physical with receiver when they were in their routes which knocked off the their timing with the quarterbacks. On one play a wide receiver was trying to run a deep route with a double move but Mullen slowed him down and was able to break up the pass. LSU, South Carolina and TCU are standing out to Mullen.

7. DT Benito Jones
Waynesboro (Miss.) Wayne Country

There are defensive tackles that are bigger than Jones but there aren't many that are as athletic or as quick off the snap. He plays with good leverage and balance so it is hard for offensive linemen to get a good push on him. Jones is very good at attacking half of the offensive lineman instead of staying square. Jones is committed to Mississippi State.

8. LB Rahshaun Smith
Baltimore (Md.) St. Frances

Smith is listed as the top weakside defensive end in the 2016 class but has become a very good outside linebacker. He was very physical with running backs and tight ends. There was one play where Smith got a great jam on a tight end and knocked down a pass with a very athletic move. Maryland, Oklahoma, Penn State, Tennessee, Clemson, Alabama and Ohio State are recruiting Smith the hardest.

9. DB Shyheim Carter
Kentwood (La.)

Carter was a bit nicked up but played well for most of the day. He was physical at the line of scrimmage and there are many aspects of his game that are very advances. At one point Carter poked the ball out of the receiver's hands at an angle that made it very difficult. Carter is committed to Alabama.

11. DT Rashard Lawrence
Monroe (La.) Neville

Lawrence was very aggressive during the one-on-one portion on Friday. He is very strong and played with good leverage, which help him knock offensive linemen off balance with a strong punch. Lawrence used a good rip move and a quick inside spin move to beat the man in front of him. USC and LSU look to be leading for Lawrence.

12. DB Deontay Anderson
Manvel (Texas)

Anderson showed off good range from his safety position. He was able to make plays from sideline to sideline but also knew when to fly up field to make a play on the ball. LSU, Texas A&M, Ole Miss and Auburn are all in good position for Anderson.

13. DT Derrick Brown
Sugar Hill (Ga.) Lanier

Brown was probably the biggest defensive lineman on the field and was overpowering at time. He was able to generate a great push, had a strong punch and a very good spear that knocked offensive linemen backwards. He could have been higher on this list if he took more reps. Alabama, Auburn and Georgia are leading for Brown but South Carolina and Vanderbilt are in the mix.

ORLANDO, Florida -- The Elite 50 Experience presented by Under Armour took place Friday morning at the Wide World of Sports complex at Disney. This was an event for some of the best 2016 and 2017 prospects and many future Under Armour All-Americans. Here is a look at the top offensive performers from the workout:

quote:

1. QB Shea Patterson
Shreveport (La.) Calvert Academy

Patterson instantly developed chemistry with almost every wide receiver and then delivered the ball accurately all over the field. The five-star quarterback was best on the deep ball where he threw it on a line and hit receivers in stride. Twice during one-on-ones he hit different receivers that were well covered right on the money. In 7-on-7, Patterson was deadly accurate on short, medium and deep balls. Patterson, a former Arizona commit, is serious about LSU, USC and Ole Miss.

2. ATH Demetris Robertson
Savannah (Ga.) Savannah Christian School

The wide receiver group was absolutely loaded, but Robertson, who also plays defensive back, was the best of the bunch. A five-star and the nation's top-rated athlete by Rivals.com, Robertson is so sudden in and out of his breaks and he's a constant deep threat. The Alabama commit did drop a few difficult passes, but he caught a lot more and created separation on almost every route. Robertson is a superb athlete that is a fantastic receiver and he proved it Friday.
