Daron Payne, Shy Tuttle, Jalen Dalton and Mack are having strong days. So quick off the ball. Tuttle does great job getting skinny in space.

1on1s are over for now for WRs and DBs.

TJ Rahming weighed in at under 150 pounds yesterday at check-in, but the Duke commit proved to be a deep threat out here.

Deon Cain moves at a different speed.

FSU commit Tavarus McFadden and Alabama commit Rico McGraw shined defensively.

Albert Huggins and Trent Thompson a nice combo inside for East Team defensive line.

Also like Kyle Phillips. 3-4 DE type who has nice size and good explosion.

Mekhi Brown has a nice first step. Quick around edge. He does get absorbed at times.

We've decided to take a closer look at the six players who have agreed to decide during the Under Armour All-America Game ESPN2 telecast on Friday, January 2, in St. Petersburg, Florida. Headlining the list is 5-star defensive back Kendall Sheffield.

I had the chance to catch up with Sheffield earlier this fall about his recruitment, and LSU and Texas A&M were the teams that were trending. Now, it appears that Alabama and Florida State have made a late push for the sticky cover corner out of Missouri City, Texas.

I spoke to a source with knowledge of his recruitment who told me 'Bama is in good position with decision day less than a week away. Texas A&M still hasn't hired a defensive coordinator after firing Mark Snyder, and that could prove costly with the in-state star. It didn't help the Aggies (subscription required) when Mesquite (Texas) Poteet star linebacker Malik Jefferson chose the Longhorns over A&M and UCLA on December 19.

The Crimson Tide have been here before with regard to a top-notch defensive back out of the Lone Star State. Last year, 'Bama snagged Tony Brown over LSU and Texas. You can't count out Nick Saban in this scenario.

You would like to see Texas A&M make a hire before the New Year, so players like Sheffield can do their research before announcing. If the Aggies don't figure out who they are going to hire in a hurry, it will be devastating on the defensive side of the ball in the 2015 class for head coach Kevin Sumlin. Last week, they lost 5-star defensive tackle commitment Daylon Mack. Sumlin's reputation as an offensive guru and quarterback whisperer may not matter if he can't get the defense corrected in 2015.

Birmingham, Alabama, product Daron Payne is one of the top defensive tackles in the class of 2015. He has a low center of gravity combined with excellent lower-body power that allows him to drive his opponent backward and disrupt the offensive backfield on a consistent basis.

On the recruiting front, he will decide between Alabama, Auburn and Mississippi State. Earlier this fall he told me assistant coach Mario Cristobal treats him like a son, and that type of effort could pay off for the Tide.

Mississippi State has given maximum effort with Payne, and that should be noted. His high school teammate Keith Mixon is committed to the Bulldogs, and they continue to put the full-court press on. Payne told me he had the "best time" at Hail State summer camp. Auburn is in the picture, but it looks like the Tigers are on the outside looking in.

Typically, Alabama doesn't lose head-to-head recruiting battles with Mississippi State. In my opinion, he is the Tide's to lose especially with ace recruiter Mario Cristobal leading the charge combined with the fact defensive coordinator and Payne's primary recruiter Geoff Collins left State for Florida.

Already Under the Tree: 23 commits (four 5-stars; 14 4-stars)

Holiday Wish List

5-star cornerback Kendall Sheffield (Missouri City, Texas): Alabama aims to acquire a 5-star tandem at the position for a second straight cycle. Tony Brown and Marlon Humphrey made it a very merry signing day last February, and Sheffield could join forces with New Jersey commit Minkah Fitzpatrick.

4-star defensive tackle Daron Payne (Birmingham, Alabama): The 6'2, 325-pound nose tackle would add to another impressive collection of incoming talent along the Crimson Tide defensive front. Payne has the potential to make Alabama's run-stuffing efforts even stingier. Auburn and Mississippi State provide stiff competition.

5-star running back Damien Harris (Berea, Kentucky): The nation's top-ranked rusher would fall in line with other elite talents who've played the position in Tuscaloosa under Saban. Harris, who gained nearly 6,800 yards and 111 touchdowns on the ground at Madison Southern High School, visited Alabama twice during the season.

Reinforcements are on the way.

The sadness that comes with the end of a college football season can be tempered by knowing there's a large pool of talent waiting to show up on campuses and contribute right away. The 2015 recruiting class is as strong as any in the past decade, and with freshmen making more of an impact than ever, many of these prospects will end up starting next fall.

And several have the chance to be stars right out of the gate.

The 2014 class featured the likes of LSU running back Leonard Fournette, Texas A&M defensive end Myles Garrett and Florida State running back Dalvin Cook among the many true freshmen who have already become stars.

Who's in line to do that from the 2015 crop? Check out our list of some of the recruits that have the most star potential.

Blake Barnett

Position: Dual-threat quarterback

Height, weight: 6'4.5", 200 lbs

Ranking: 12th

After seeing what Lane Kiffin was able to do with Blake Sims this season, a lot of top-tier quarterback recruits are likely to be looking at Alabama for their future plans. But Blake Barnett pledged to the Crimson Tide in June, before Kiffin had a chance to show off his talents as offensive coordinator in Tuscaloosa.

The thought of Barnett and Kiffin working together next season is almost too good to be true.

Originally a Notre Dame commit before flipping to Alabama, Barnett is the top-rated dual-threat passer in the 2015 class. The Tide haven't had a truly mobile quarterback before, but Sims did rush for 321 yards and six touchdowns this season.

Barnett figures to blow those rushing numbers away when he gets into the mix, rushing for nearly 700 yards with 13 TDs as a junior at Santiago High School in Corona, California. This past season he had 479 rushing yards and seven TDs along with 3,392 passing yards with 23 scores.

"As Saban has pointed out numerous times in recent years, having a quarterback who can make plays with his feet is useful in any style of offense, and it's clear that bringing in a more athletic player under center is an idea that has been on Saban's mind for several years," wrote Matt Scalici of AL.com.

Terry Godwin

Position: Athlete

Height, weight: 6'0", 168 lbs

Ranking: 20th

Though he's been committed to Georgia for more than 11 months, Terry Godwin remains a hot commodity on the recruiting circuit. He's already visited his pledged school, but the departure of offensive coordinator Mike Bobo—who was integral in landing the two-way player—to Colorado State could make his upcoming visits more critical.

Alabama, Auburn and Texas A&M are all set to host the wide receiver/defensive back in January, and all three of them could have a use for him on either side of the ball. He seems more interested in playing receiver, though, telling Wesley Sinor of AL.com in May that "the things I can do with the ball in my hands—any offense I go to I'll be able to fit in because of my skill set."

A Georgia native, he's listed as the top-rated athlete in 2015.

A trend that has gained steam in college football in recent years is the emergence of true freshmen taking on bigger roles almost immediately upon arriving on campus.

A quick example of this can be found when taking a look at the running backs who will start in the national semifinal Rose Bowl matchup between No. 2 Oregon and No. 3 Florida State.

Royce Freeman leads the Ducks in rushing with his counterpart Dalvin Cook pacing the Seminoles ground attack—despite the fact that both players were putting the finishing touches on their prep careers at this point a year ago.

The 2015 cycle has a handful of talents who are capable of coming and making a similar impact to Freeman and Cook.

Which 2015 recruits have a chance to earn a starting role as true freshmen next fall?

The last time Nick Saban dipped into the recruiting hotbed of South Florida to pluck a wide receiver, he landed then-4-star prospect and current Biletnikoff Award winner Amari Cooper in the 2012 cycle.

The Tide are hoping to offset the potential loss of Cooper this offseason with another talented Floridian in 5-star receiver Calvin Ridley.

As Cooper was, the 6’0”, 170-pounder is scheduled to be an early enrollee for the Tide.

With the graduation of senior starters DeAndrew White and Christion Jones, the Tide’s receiving unit will have a new look next season.

The expected turnover at the position gives Ridley a chance to make a similar impression as the one Cooper made during his freshman year.

The 5-Star Alabama commit didn’t get to the whole day with a sore ankle, but it was very clear with the ball in his hands in space he has another burst. He is quick and will be a match up problem one on one for just about most on the high school level including an all-star setting.
