I wonder if someone is transferring or if Jr. is coming off scholarship for Kira to have room. I hope it's not about Butler.

I would assume it's Junior coming off scholarship, because we've been looking to add one more even with us already having 13 for a while now. I hope all these Butler rumors go away, but he may be an open scholarship for 2019 if they don't. Regardless of what we find out, I hope we at least keep him on scholarship this year.

Can Jr stay on the team if he's removed from scholarship?

Can we petition that he not?

I don't think we can technically just remove him from scholarship. I think he'll have to decline it, and then we'll add him as a walkon.

How many do we plan on taking in 2019 now that Kira has reclassified. I'd assume 3 instead of 4, but if the REC can make things happen and get us both Watford and Walker surely we would make room.

There's many things that I could see happening here.

If Ingram doesn't start I wouldn't be surprised if he grad transfers. I expect Giddens to grad transfer, but that will leave us thin at center.

We have to consider Butler's rumored health issues. I could see Reese transferring if he doesn't get a lot of PT this year also. Walker and Watford are 4s, so Reese would have to battle it out with them.

Petty and Herbert could go pro. While I don't think either is ready, this is a weak draft class, so they might be best to go particularly a high upside, risky pick like Herbert.

Smith/Fleming and Wood could also transfer if they don't see the court much or at all this year especially if Giddens stays for the two bigs.

Gongora was way ahead on that one.

So what are y'all thinking for a rotation? If Butler can go, we have a lot of guys to share minutes between.

Heavy bulk of the minutes:

Lewis
Petty
Mack
Jones
Hall
Ingram
Reese
Norris

Sprinkle of:

Fleming
Smith
Giddens
Avery Jr.
Butler

Next to no minutes:

Schaffer
Wood

That's my guess to start the season. I imagine one of Fleming/Giddens/Smith will eventually earn a spot in the rotation and one will find themselves on the bench next to Wood and Schaffer. Really interested to see if Fleming becomes an impact guy for us. If what he was saying when he committed about the staff really liking his defensive ability, he'd be my favorite to win that spot.

I don’t expect Butler to ever play basketball again. He’s still not cleared last I heard

I don't really group Fleming with Smith and Giddens. Fleming is probably going to play the four I think. He doesn't have the leaping ability or height to defend the rim, but it sounds like he moves well enough to defend on the perimeter.

I think that is his eventual position, but I think the 4 will be too crowded this year (with some of our overabundance of wings spending time there) for him to see time there. I think he has plenty of size to play backup minutes at the 5. I think Smith did pretty solid last year, but he's not a rim protector, rebounder or scorer. Giddens can protect the rim, but he fell out of favor late in the season with his fouling and zero rebounds. If Fleming is able to rebound and defend at a solid level next year, I wouldn't hesitate to put him at the 5 as he's a much better threat to score than either of those 2.

Galin Smith will get a lot of minutes....he played really well at the end of last year.

I'd say he played solid for a freshman towards the end of last year. He was better offensively than we expected and wasn't the liability Giddens was on the boards. I think Fleming will prove to be the better player this year.

He really did and looked like he got intimated a bit to open conference play. Pretty cool seeing the light go on for him.

I'm thinking he will too, but I can understand the case for Fleming.

Does everyone think Kira for sure starts? He'll have only been here for several months, and I think we may be better off with him being a star sixth man at least to start.

I'm thinking

Dazon
Petty
Mack
Reese
Hall

with Herbert and Kira getting around starters minutes off the bench

Galin, Giddens, Riley getting role player minutes. AJ Jr will get like 10 minutes too.

I think he does. The main reason being that the biggest hesitation of starting a highly ranked freshman PG is turnovers and handling the ball against pressure, both of which aren't Ingram's strong suit. If we had a solid ball-handler I'd say it's up for debate, but I already feel safer with the ball in Kira's hands than Ingram's. I do think we'll see more of Ingram running the PG with Lewis on the bench. I think Ingram would be the ideal 6th man given his versatility to play 3 positions well and be a stop gap at a 4th position (PF) as well. I really hope he could embrace that role, because he could be a star in that role.
