Really?Ok,this is from someone who worked at 2 athletic depts and did nothing but make sure these athletes got every penny coming to 'em.Keep in mind she was at Arkansas and the cost for UGA and athletes is probably higher.

LINK

This was also 2011 the stipends could have gone up.

Read down further

"A TYPICAL non-freshman FB player receives"
$5,500 Pell Grant
$500.00 Clothing
$8,024 for 2 semesters

FWIW, that should say, can receive. On average for the team, players dont max the pell grant, but its towards the top half

The get paid for travel a few times a year, they get several other needs based scholarships as well. Not everyone gets something, but the majority get something, and many get a significant amount

Where did you get that info on Pell Grants?

Having a social life in college is not cheap these days and when you are not allowed to have a job, it limits what you can earn. The only travel stipend I ever got that I can recall was for the Bowl games.

The bigger issue here is that this scam is well known at most schools, but you typically have a place that is known where you can cash personal checks that get purchased by boosters and never cashed to the bank. You don't double dip on the AD checks. Maybe, the issue is that no one has paper checks any more or our boosters have done a poor job at explaining how it works....

Four players get in trouble for breaking the law and this thread has devolved into "Poor babies, the system is broken".

You can argue that shite all day long but there are plenty of other players at every other school in the US who aren't breaking the law to get some extra cash.

You don't like the rules then go thru the proper channels to change them. Until then, stop committing crimes.

it was on a report about the SEC from a year or two ago. I hastily searched for it and couldnt find it

absolutely, its a commitment, thats not for everyone. Have a cousin that was a 2nd string QB in a D1 school, that transferred for that very reason this year

You get travel reimbursement to go home, its based upon how far school is from home, there is a cap as well

You played CFB?

That's not what the article stated. It stated for "2010-2011 school year the typical arkansas FB
player recieved $5,500.00"

There's no doubt in my mind the majority of these kids get the full Pell Grant but I'm not sure it's "typical"

Frankly, I think our system for cheating has been dismantled and this is the result.

I wasnt saying that, just saying they all dont(Max Pell). My family owns trade schools, I know about Pell and how easy it is to get it. Had to do Pell apps all the time. Had to listen to why we didnt pay them to come to school as well

I know in the 90's pre-paid Visa and MC's were
the preferred choice when it came to getting players $$

That article is full of conjecture, opinion, and inaccurate information.

He basically says that Pell grants are a sure thing for every athlete, and max pay at that, which is just a complete lie.

LINK: How Pell grants are calculated

The vast majority of student athletes don't qualify for Pell grants. Not only do most of them not meet the < $50k family income requirement, but their COA is virtually ZERO because of what all is provided to student athletes on top of the usual things that go along with a scholarship (above just tuition, books, and R&B).

Educate yourself on how Pell works. What COA and EFC are and how Pell is calculated if you actually even qualify for it after financial requirements are assessed.

The fact the article you linked doesn't even come close to accurately explaining how a Pell grant really works means the entire thing is full of shite.

Closest I got to a Pell grant was when Charlie Pell told me I would live and eat like a king...

Do what? UGA athletics has people that do nothing more than make sure these athletes recieve Pell Grants. There's NOTHING in that link that states that kids on athletic scholarships aren't eligible.

The only calulation is based on COA minus the EFC.
The cost of the athletic scholarship in NOWHERE to be found in the calcualtion of COA and IT'S NOT.

You state the article is full on "conjecture, opinion and inaccurate information"
Did the author pull numbers for the semester stipend out of their arse? Did they make it up?

Actually, most of them do, at least in the major sports, where they have someone help them. However, not all them max it

I just have to say, the "social life is expensive" in Athens has it pretty wrong IMO, unless you want to just go crazy. Outside of bills and rent (together 530 to live in a downtown loft) I spent usually a little less than 80 a week on food and social stuff. Not hard at all.
