Most usually it hinges on the value of the property which is pretty much standard across the country. LINK

Sometimes the type of property taken, whether force was used to take it, etc., makes a difference but normally value is the key.

If they had used force, there would be other charges probably?

Sorry last question, do credit cards or checks hold a certain value on thier own or is it just the amount spent with them?

In my State theft of a credit or debit card is in and of itself a felony and GA law appears to the same. LINK

And if force is used to commit a theft that is normally classified as robbery and is a more serious crime. Depending on what force is used there might also be charges of assault and battery as well.

Sounds like they were playing fast and loose with their stipends and possibly trying to get more? Apparently, it is the UGAA that pressed charges.

I always thought theft by deception was like using a check to pay for something that you know the account is no longer open. Kind of like a Catch Me If you Can type of crap. But obviously these guys were not smart enough to get away with it very long. Wasn't Matthews all ready in trouble?

So it isn't making someone look the other way, then stealing their french fries or mcnuggets or something?

That's the same thing that got ty flourney smith arrested (allegedly). he filed a police report that they (school books) were stolen.

Apparently, he just sold them instead (allegedly).

Good god, I am usually 100% without our PD or AA covering this shite with running and handling it internally but if these guys really did the same exact shite that got Flourney-Smith booted then I can't even be mad that they were arrested. That shite is straight darwinian.

I told people I thought there were more of them doing it than just Smith and no one believed me. These guys aren't smart enough to come up with a scam like this. It has to have been institutionalized for years.

I made it through 4 years of vet school without buying 90% of the books that were supposedly required. You know what would be smart? For a few players to buy textbooks that they all use, and then split up the rest of the stipend among themselves. No one would give a shite about that. Apparently, that is too complicated for them....just like Grantham's defense.

I don't think the athletes buy their own books.
They are provided by the athletic department.

That's why selling the books is such a no-no.

It is selling property that the students don't own.
