Was offered a one year contract to work in state parks in Southeast Georgia in St Mary's. Pay isn't great but worth the experience and connection(s). My job duties would be related to interpretation and programming towards the outreach and accountability of specific programs for local parks.

I graduated from UGA 2 years ago and I'm kind of pissed off about my ability to find a decent paying job abroad or nationally but this opportunity came up and I'm extremely motivated to take advantage and am willing to risk the short term for the long term.

Should I do it?

Visit first.

St Mary's is about 1 block large.

Great place to raise a family or retire, but if I was your age, I would get bored in about a week.

So you mean GA DNR State Parks or state parks that are something else. Also...Rigs right...probably not much of a thriving gay community in St Mary's.

Which park?

While St. Mary's is small, you're about 30 mins from Fernandina and 40 mins from Jax. It's a nice place to live, convenient to a decent-sized city and "because beach".

Take the damn job.

I lived near there for a long time. It is not boring unless you want big city night life. Hunting and fishing everywhere beaches for days. Near Jax Amelia Island even St Augustine Golf everywhere. Great seafood. Nice people.

Lots of lonely military wives from Kings Bay if you are that kind of guy. I hope you are not.

Several parks. Including, but not limited to, Crooked River, Stephen C Foster (in Okefenokee) and Sapelo Island.

It sounds like you already answered it. Especially if you think it'll help in the long run and there aren't any better options right now in the short run.

There's a lot worse places to live than southeast Georgia, it certainly won't be the same as Athens (in both good and bad ways) but it's beautiful down there and if you're into the outdoors (which I assume you are since you'll be working for the parks), there's an endless amount of things to do.

Good luck

I've worked with those folks. Lots of history down there. Will they offer free/low cost lodging? Will look good on a resume'. if you can put some $ in the bank, take it. And take some bug spray.

Get the experience! Also if the park has rivers to fly fish or land to hunt give Ole Remington a shout and I'll head that way!

GO DAWGS!!

Housing for interpretive rangers is a small step up from a tent....or could be a room attached to a 70 yr old CCC building. If you're cool with that and working when everyone else is off then the park system is a cool gig. Just not much money in it.
