JD's world: I'm so rich I think I'll buy Yellowstone. But I'm going to leave it preserved and operate it at a loss. I'm definitely going to allow the public on it though because of that sweet tax benefit.

That's not my world.

My World: Feds give the land back to the states where it is located. If the people there want to keep some or all of it as a park, contract the management and preservation of the park out to a private entity.

And why do you assume it would be operated at a loss like it is now?

In the real world, and not the artificial world of government where loss or profit doesn't matter, there a natural incentives and motivations to be successful.

PDX's World: The government owns about a third of all the land in this country. And I'm fine with it. Land of the "free"!!!

Hell. During my time in Athens I had three holes I fished within maybe 25 minutes of town. They were just ponds on people’s private land that had a locked mailbox with a note saying it was $5 dollars per person per day and to watch out for water snakes by the bridge. I don’t think I ever saw the owners except maybe once or twice.

There used to be a place like this by my place in south ga. They ended up locking it up and had to have law constantly patrol it. After the bridge fishers caught and kept all the fish out they thought it'd be a good idea to start trashing the place and throwing their "family reunion" type events there. They turned a beautiful lake into a cesspool..

Yea frick the government! Anarchy! !!!!! Weeeeeeeeeeee

So providing government tax breaks to people is considered "anarchy" to you?

Far out.

As far as the rest, I've had the opposite experience. The WMAs and parks etc are all over-used and over-fished hunted. The private landowner can limit how many people visit and who can visit to balance with the resources to ensure that people still want to come pay him money to fish etc. Like the person in your story should have done.

It's not rocket science.

I recall from a while back that you used to work in national parks out west somewhere, correct? Seems like it's something you're passionate about and enjoy doing, so go for it. It really just all depends on what you want out of an occupation; money or enjoyment. I entered a field that would typically be looked down upon, but I enjoy it. I've known since before I even graduated I would never make 6 figures, and that's fine by me. I've worked my way up and have done well for myself, plus I've always been great at living within my means.

If it's a good opportunity that will be a good resume booster for the future, have at it. The first full time job I ever had sucked, it didn't pay much and I didn't like it. But it enabled me to add a few bright spots on my resume which helped me later on down the line.

If a little boy only gets to fish a couple times a year whenever Mr Jefferson says its ok, then he ends up wearing a flatbill cap and holding his spinning reel upside down. When he grows up and has a boy of his own, he probably wont even teach him to fish because his own experiences didnt mean that much, and old man JD wont let anyone fish the pond now anyway, what with the zombie flu and drones and whatnot. And the liability.

What's funny is that I am the one trying to make sure there's a place for for young deeprig jr to be able to fish. The rest of you want to keep trying the same failed methods over and over hoping one day for a different result.

Good luck with that.

Might as well tie a hook and string onto a pencil and let him fish in your moldy aquarium for all I care.

Sheesh...

At 3 months old he is obsessed with the neon tetras, and loves being outside. When nothing else will make him stop crying, walk him outside and he lights up with happiness and the wonder of a child's eyes sets a hook in your heart.

But mean old Mr Jefferson Dawg wants to take that joy away. Freedom he says. Communism bad. Freedom good.

And little bitty Icabod draws a nice clean breath....
From over his beaming father's shoulder.
And he stares at the worldy Wonders that stretch just as far as he can see.
But....he'll stop.... dreaming..... when he's older.

The concept that we should rely on the benevolence of the wealthy to buy serious acreage in some of the most beautiful parts of the state...spend more money for facilities and upkeep....and then open it up to us common folk really is laughable. Again...if this was a profitable venture we'd have private parks all over the place.

Likewise there are numerous sites of historical significance that wouldn't exist today if not maintained by the state.

The govt is a bloated mess but it does have its purposes.

More continued oversimplification...

Chortle all you want, but it's not laughable to me.

There are some small ones actually.

But It's not a level playing field. The governments hold the monopoly on this market.

But, at least you' are admitting your socialist belief system now.

Honestly, I'd probably be a lot less annoyed at the hypocrisy and the sad state of things if people would drop the "land of the free" liberty propaganda and just admit that they don't really don't believe in any of it.

I think it's possible to recognize that there are legitimate uses for government without being a socialist...and this is one of them in my opinion. I can go right now and enjoy some of the most beautiful country in GA that has been undisturbed and protected for almost 100 yrs now....and more than likely future generations would too.

Under your model I doubt that would be the case. To each his own though...

So, if the couple hundred bucks they make a year was worth it to them for allowing some public access, then I’m pretty sure becoming qualified to have zero taxes stolen from them would also be a good incentive.
. Yellowstone/Yosimite/Red Woods/Crater Lake/Bass pond in a cow field....

one of these things is not like the other....
