I think if you look at odds charts coaches sometimes use, you will see that 4th and 5 outside the 20 has a similar conversion rate as punting between the 10 and 20 yard line and twice the probability of pinning inside the 10.
So, your risk would be roughly equal odds on a first down vs18-28 yards advancement of ball and change of possession.

The Dawgs had lots of chances throughout the game to put away the vols. They just didn't make the plays. The coaches did a great job of putting the players in position to make plays and that is about all they can do.
If your standard is perfection on every pass, every catch, every block, every tackle, etc then you need to watch another sport. College football is about players developing and teams developing. Mistakes are a part of it.
Every play that doesn't work is not a bad call, and every play that does work is not a good call.
The loss to Tennessee hurts, but i saw a hell of a lot of improvement in the team this week. Very positive about our chances if they continue to work.

Motherfricking this. We may have found our new default WR in Ridley. Super small sample size, but he didn't drop the ball, and that's job #1.

Most coaches punt. Force a clean fair catch in traffic or get several players down field with an opportunity to down it.
I don't mind going for it in 4th. But Catalina is our left tackle. The worst case scenario is worse than what happened.

You don't give a Tennessee offense that was rolling our defense the ball at the 40 yard line. 4th and 5 isn't good odds.
You don't give them the ball back period for that very reason. You try to keep it.
A 5 yard pass is better odds than you claim.

An average punter will put it inside 10 less than 20%.
4 and 5 in that situation is in the high 30% conversion rate.

We are gonna be like Washington in the next few years. When I was watching them whoop Stanford the announcers said the team the last few years had been all freshman and now they are juniors and seniors that had been starting for 3 or 4 years. This team is gonna have a lot of experience under they're belt in the next few years. 2017 and 2018 and beyond are gonna be some good years guys. I'm still in shock we lost that game to a fluke. We would of more then likely went to the SEC championship Kirby's first year with that win

Don't blame people for wanting to go for it but the ironic part is the decision worked and UT made the exact same decision a few minutes later, punting inside the 40. Difference is we didn't execute the short punt and they did. If their long snapper doesn't make that over the shoulder catch to down it at the 5 we have a great shot at running the game out. The defense stepped up and was great the whole 4th quarter minus the last pass.

This!!!
It is so easy to second guess calls. The truth is we have a young team making mental mistakes. That happens.
UGA could have won and should have won, we just didn't.
I think the young pups grew up a tad n yesterday and can't wait till next weekend to see more improvement. The mean machine of red and bkack is just now getting started.
Also, congrats to CMR on his undefeated streak in BDS!

Default? He's probably been our most talented WR since he should up on campus.

We are sick of the justification of mediocrity through excuses. You people are the reason UGA football is where it is today. When you people see mediocrity, you ease up from behind it and toss it's salad while giving it a vigorous reach around. We have been mired in mediocrity for so long, that it has become a Stockholm Syndrome type situation. You love it and protect it. Better stock up on grape jelly....

I'm with you. But we aren't the only team playing young guys.
Ole Miss beat us with a bunch of freshmen at WR and CB making plays on us. Bama reloads.
I am optimistic. BUT nothing is a given. We gotta lot of work ahead of us.

Give me a friggin' break. If Smart had gone for that 4th down and not made it, and Tennessee got great field position and went down and scored, you would be slamming Smart as stupid. So he can't win either way. He made the right decision.

But how many times has Ridley played? iMac has been the #1 target to this point.
Posted on 10/2/16 at 12:22 pm to samson'sseed
4th and 5? No. he did the right thing. He had not way of knowing that we could not pin them deeper into their territory, nor did he know they would gain 18 yards. The right move is to punt and try to hold them deep in their own territory. He did the right thing.

Easy? no. But it is possible. We did stop them on several occasions, and if we are going to succeed Kirby will have to put them in a position to prove they can do it. I honestly think he made the right decision. You know I criticized him a lot last week. I'm not scared to call him out when I feel he messes up. I am also not afraid o commend him when I think he makes a good solid coaching decision, no matter how it ends up. He made the same decision most any coach would have made, and in my opinion it was the correct one.
