They shouldnt have built there in the first place. I remember being at a ballgame in the old stadium and lookn across at the newer one bein built and thinkin "whats wrong with this one".

Fulton County Stadium wasn't the best in the world, but it was okay. The Ted was built for the olympics and gave the city a reason to justify a new ballpark. It was a good plan and I have been very impressed with the Ted since it opened. There's not a bad seat in that whole park.

I just think it's very wasteful to vacate a nice, state-of-the-art ballpark because white folks in the Northern suburbs don't want to come into the city.

I will respectfully disagree with this, the TED is not a dump by any means but it is far from state of the art. IMO that label pertains to PNC Park, Target Field, AT&T Park etc.

What does it not have necessary to watching a baseball game. Of course, you're talking to a lover of all things Wrigley Field.

if you can get an extra 10k to come to just one game, thats at least a half million in revenue, for one game. its not wasteful in the slightest

The Braves' lease with the stadium ends at the conclusion of the 2016 season. The TED was funded by the Olympics. The Braves don't want to pay rent anymore. It really isnt that hard to understand why they are leaving.

PS - rumors of an MLS team or Georgia State going to play their games there.

It's nice they're moving it out of the hood, but as a person who lived in that general vicinity, I would have been colossally pissed about having that traffic-inducing monstrosity plopped near my house.

It also means the area surrounding the Ted will probably fall into further disrepair. I was hoping they'd keep it downtown and just clean up the area. I get why they would want to bolt, though.

But as a foreigner I don't really have a say in the matter.

I absolutely hate the fact that we have no seats or any sort of decor behind center field it is an eye sore of epic proportions. The chop house is pretty cool and I hope they have something similar, hopefully a little bigger, at the new park. IMO the Ted is about average as far as MLB stadiums go, nothing great, nothing bad, very meh.

Wonder if there's any chance to make a concert venue out of the Ted? Add more seats down on the field.

This has everything to do with how the lease is structured. New locations will structure better lease deals and give them a brand new product (ie moves to Gwinnett and Rome). Having them on the hook for major maintenance that doesn't generate any new revenue is a killer.

People forget these are private businesses. Atlanta will have a huge piece of property to sell or develop and potentially generate even more through tax dollars.

Fantastic move!

I hope they go look at Pittsburgh and see how to do one correctly and use it as the benchmark.

tFulton County commission and the Atlanta city council members can only extort so much (*allegedly).

I think the stadium sits 47k, not sure how they would rearchitect it for MLS and Football.

just did some reading on this, looks like the braves have been trying to get a public funded renovation for some time now and the city was not moving. Looks like they(city) also wanted an additional 20 year lease.

I live about 19 miles North and I work less than a mile from the new site. Should be fun except when traffic BLOWS up even worse haha. I still am happy to not have to go to the hood to see my Braves! If you drive around the Ted there are some of the most sketch areas you will EVER see. "No Gun" Zones?? I mean you can't blame them for wanting to run far away from that crap.

It just seems like we should worry about winning before buying a new stadium. Can't afford to keep our franchise player in McCann and instead replace another 20 year old stadium.

I'm not an Atlanta taxpayer so it'll be cool to have a new stadium just seems unnecessary. I've heard very few complaints about turner field other than no Marta stop and now that they announce we are abandoning it everyone acts like its 15 years overdue.

LOVE this. I have wanted both the falcons and braves to get the hell out of there but I'll take the braves any day, let them keep the falcons.

Great fricking news

Now if we can just increase our payroll....
