Not true. All of the metro interstates were pre-treated. You are right about the inability to post-treat. Snow had jack shite to do with the traffic. It was just the x factor. The x factor could be anything, as JD alluded to.

they were definitely not pre-treated. There was absolutely no salt on any of the highways I was driving on this morning. And there was no salt on any of the interstates as I was leaving work. And as the governor and mayor just indicated, they had no idea that the storm would reach the city and the northern suburbs. They were caught off guard.

But in thinking about it, Atlanta is generally lucky when it comes to weather. No earthquakes, no real severe weather (you get a tornado every now and then), no hurricanes and the winters are generally mild. it definitely could be worse.

fricking idiot...ANY excuse to take a shot at Atlanta.Beyond the school situation, what exactly should have been done to avoid the traffic situation?

More snow plows? Some sort of massive govt takeover of the interstates?

It was brine, not rock salt. You wouldn't have seen it.

GDOT was on the news this afternoon before the clusterfrick even happened, talking about the brine they sprayed down just like they do in Washington DC.

What you hear from Deal and Reed is just PR bullshite. They don't want to admit what JD was alluding to.

Let me ask you this Thomassssss,

How much more rock salt do you think would have prevented the noon clusterfrick in Atlanta today?

100 tons? 500 tons?

How many more snow plows did they need to scrape 3/4 of an inch of snow off the roads, that would have prevented the noon clusterfrick in Atlanta today?

10? 40? 100?

Bitch please.

But clearly the issue is the roads. nothing was salted beforehand and nothing can be salted now since the roads are still jammed pack.

I would argue that if the mass-exodus was sparked by some other kind of event........where people simultaneously tried to leave the city at the same time............that fear, panic, and self-preservation instincts..............would probably make for an even much much uglier situation......than what the icy roads have produced.

And this would be the same for most any major city.

Yes, this city is a shithole and a deathtrap...and that has absolutely nothing to do with the snow. Everything being frozen just makes it cold shithole deathtrap that is much harder to get out of.

I'm curious though, for those in or close enough to Atlanta to know much about the elected leadership and how poorly that city is ran, did anyone really expect this to be handled well? Put a bunch of people in charge of a city and situation like this who are only skilled at scamming the populace and this is what you get.

No. Kasim Reed and Nathan Deal failed. They did not properly warn the populace at all. All it would have taken was an announcement:

"Hey guys, it's gonna get pretty hairy around noon tomorrow. So we suggest that you just stay home, work from home if you can, so that we can keep congestion to a minimum."

Would everyone have taken this advice? No. But I can guarantee you that we don't have the problems we're currently having.

This is not unexpected....its a tragic intersection between inept local govt and the yankeeization of Atlanta.

Yankees have some misguided pride in being able to drive in snow...we've all heard it..."youse guys don't know how to drive..". Therefore they don't heed simple warnings and insist on waiting until conditions truly suck.

What they fail to grasp is that southerners don't have fleets of equipment to deal with bad weather...it doesn't happen enough to spend the money. Plus, most of us are smart enough to avoid the highways when its below freezing and there's precipitation. We'd rather stay home and spend time with our families.

Put these together and wham...interstate death trap.

Its when the Yankees got other Yankees into office that we reach the precipice..... Yankees deciding not to close the office or school because "...dis ain't too bad..."

Simple logic....

This x1000. The bigger problem than us not having the equipment is this part right here. Every time I hear one say this I want to punch them.

YES, you know how to drive in SNOW...problem is this isn't snow, it is ice and most northerners I know don't have a fricking clue how to drive on ice, just snow. They cause and are involved in as many wrecks as the southerners they like to stereotype.

Meanwhile, this southerner has NEVER had an accident in the ice/snow.
