Good to see folks helping out.

I guess it is because I grew up in a rural area, but I knew I could never live in or around Atlanta. I wouldn't make it
I relish the peace and freedom of nature too much. Glad I missed out on the rat race that my friends so eagerly pursued.

I'm curious though, for those in or close enough to Atlanta to know much about the elected leadership and how poorly that city is ran, did anyone really expect this to be handled well? Put a bunch of people in charge of a city and situation like this who are only skilled at scamming the populace and this is what you get.

People often confuse Atlanta the city with Atlanta the region. Atlanta proper only has half a million people. The region has over 6 million people with roughly 60 different mayors and executive branches of government and there is zero coordination between them. It was ridiculous for everyone to be dismissed from school/work at the same time. That goes to the other issue of the lack of a decent public transportation system. Most of the people stranded on 75/85 live in areas that blocked MARTA expansion, so, I don't feel sorry for them.

The x factor could be anything

One has to be the local weather forecast.ALL of them got it wrong including Glenn Burns. They all predicted a very slim chance of snow for the city and Northern burbs. The heavier prediction of snow was south of
the city down to central Georgia.

At the very minimum the mess with the schools could have been avoided and I imagine the state and federal workers that flood into the city would have had their work days cancelled.

Went back and read my quotes and am happy I’m consistent.

I grew up in the mountains and sometimes we’d have snow and ice when there was none in the valley. We learned to figure out what was and wasn’t safe to drive in. Even in a front wheel drive, two tires off the road and going slow could get you home.

However, this was when you could get an excused absence from school based on a parent’s common sense and didn’t need an official decree from the school or a doctor as to what was an excused absence.

I don't think I was in the original thread.

All I know is that my school in the 90s never closed. A bunch of 16-18 year old kids forced to drive through suburbia (not main highways) with tree canopy and hills felt like assisted suicide at the time.

As for 2014, I was able to make it home from work without a problem. Cumming to Dawsonville on hwy 400 at about 3pm. No one was on the roads (probably all stuck on 285). Was it dangerous? Yes. But with hardly anyone in front of me or behind me, I had no need to hard accelerate, hard brake, or hard steer. No different than the story of driving to grandma's house.

This.

They all said that the storm basically exploded at the last moment and that the actual system changed direction at the last minute on top of it causing a literal doomsday scenario.

It would happen in most major cities if everyone had to leave at once. And even some mid size cities. Have you guys ever tried to get out of Charleston, SC from James Island at rush hour?
