7 Story Springhill suites coming to downtown at the corner of Hull and Broad

quote:

The new SpringHill Suites, part of the Marriott International brand, will be located at 220 S. Hull St., at West Broad Street immediately across Hull Street from the Benson’s Holiday Inn. Current plans call for construction to begin in the spring of next year, with completion slated for the fall of 2017, according to a Wednesday news release from Benson’s Inc. The hotelier has not yet filed plans for the hotel with the Athens-Clarke County Planning Department nor with the county’s Building Permits & Inspections Department, according to a Wednesday check with those offices.

9 story Hyatt Place coming to downtown adjacent to the Classic Center

quote:

Announcement of the new SpringHill Suites hotel comes just weeks after another hotel company, HP Athens, announced plans for a nine-story, 200-room hotel on Thomas Street immediately adjacent to The Classic Center. That hotel will have a physical connection to The Classic Center, something the downtown convention and performance space’s executive director, Paul Cramer, has repeatedly said is critical to continuing to bring convention business — and its widespread economic benefits — to the community. Under a recently amended agreement with local officials, the Hyatt Place on Thomas Street must have a certificate of occupancy issued by March 2017.

Robert Small III, a managing partner in the company that owns the Hyatt Place Hotel, said last week the elongated process of erecting the reported $35 million hotel is moving forward.

Five-story parking deck planned for One Press Place in downtown Athens

quote:

Plans for a five-story, 187-space parking deck proposed for One Press Place at the corner of Thomas and Broad streets in downtown Athens are now under review in the Athens-Clarke County Planning Department.
Plans show the structure being constructed at the end of the existing surface parking lot on the Thomas Street side of One Press Place, extending to Foundry Street and then wrapping around the building’s East Broad Street side to join with the building’s current parking structure, according to the county planning department’s Gavin Hassemer.
When completed, all five stories of the deck will be visible from Foundry Street, while the top two stories of the deck will be visible from Thomas Street. The deck at One Press Place will be immediately adjacent to parking structures at The Classic Center, downtown Athens’ convention and performance space.

The Hyatt has been in the works for years. Actually a much needed asset to downtown as Athens misses out on a lot of big conventions due to the Classic Center not having a built-in hotel. Not sure how I feel about the Springfield on Hull though...

Any idea what they're ever going to do with all that land and those surface lots between Hull and Lumpkin behind the Holiday Inn? Shocked UGA hasn't resolved to build new dorms there or that the Holiday Inn or some other hotel didn't come in and build something there (I fully expect the BCM and Morris Hall to be torn down at some point now that Terry is building their massive compound down there; wouldn't be surprised if they build a dorm there for business or intended business students)

Speaking of Athens Construction, did y'all see they found the graves of like 27 bodies adjacent to Baldwin Hall?

Is it going to be 24 hour service as was rumored at one time?

How do we have places like Zaxbys, Canes, The Varsity, etc and yet none of them have a quick service spot in Stegeman or Sanford?

I hate it. I don't want to sound like an old codger but downtown Athens is a place unto itself, it is truly one of a kind. I dread the day 20 years from now that I show up and it's a zaxby's, mcdonalds, krystal, BK on every other corner. The Pita Pit was about the most commercial I'd really wanna see DT.

Don't believe that's been determined as of yet. I imagine it will be late, a la Cane's.

Very good question.

My kid wanted to go shopping ... By that, me taking her shopping and paying. Wanted to go to J Crew. I said I really didn't want to drive to the Mall. I was informed it was right around the corner from the Ga Bar... I wept a little.

I get your thought here. But do you see Zaxby's as being McD's? BK? I really don't. Yes, its a chain. But it also has far more local ties than any of those.

It's the only way to pay the rent downtown anymore for a lot of food places; have to be a chain or franchise or owned by someone with multiple shops elsehwere. And at least Zaxbys is a fairly localized chain. If Waffle House, Zaxbys, Subway, Five Guys, Pita Pit, and Starbucks is as bad as it ever gets then I can live with that.

ETA: Kind of surprised Taco Mac never moved out here. Then again, the night is still young and I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if they put down roots off of Epps Bridge somewhere

I agree completely. There are plenty of chain restaurants that are a 5 minute drive away from downtown off of Alps road and they should keep that type of shite right there.

It's their version of a factory outlet but I get your point. I just see it as at least it keeps the wealthy foot traffic downtown where it can spill over to the more local places. This shite they're doing on the West side is getting a little ridiculous. Not sure if y'all have seen what's being prepped over there or not.

You know they did that like 12 years ago and it failed, right? Across from the Holiday Inn Express on Broad.

It's the Phi Kappa Tau house now.
