Yes we can. If there is no future, there can be no progress. C'mon guys, we have to stop the future. Everyone down to the time portal and let's get gay with each other!

Ask anyone who went to UGa and they will tell you it was great when they were there but now it has all changed. Truth is it is great and will continue to be great. Progress is defined by need and money. The campus is still the attraction and any successful business will find a spot. Things may get bumped around and make you sad for "your time". But now it's someone else's turn who will love it like it is.

Sounds like a bumper sticker for idiots.
Put it right next to the one that implores everyone stuck behind you in traffic to "Co-exist!"
Ground breaking stuff.

Progress happens, co-existing doesn't.

People that, for whatever reason, feel the need to emphasize their haircut and/or clothes and/or cranium accessories and/or bathing frequency intervals and/or etc etc........for no practical reason whatsoever.......other than to try and impress total strangers while in a tiny miniscule area of a city that has bars, and restaurants.

Have to admit, Athens is becoming more Asheville'ish. Pretty soon you'll see drum circles. Mark it down.

Alright so apparently there's yet another student high rise development going downtown... at the corner of Dougherty and N Lumpkin (next to Hotel Indigo).
It's called Uncommon Athens; expected to open Fall 2016. Ground broke a couple weeks ago if I'm not mistaken.
My SO sent me this pic earlier today.

Called Uncommon Athens
Looks virtually indistinguishable from The Standard, 755 Broad, 909 Broad, and The Mark

This represents a public health risk.

Yup. It looks like Georgia Heights' twin.

I just went into the standard for the first time this past weekend. I didn't think it was anything special. It's honestly such a fricking hassle getting just like getting into an apartment if you don't live there. Pretty annoying. You had to add 5 minutes to every commute just to get to your car.
I'm sure people appreciate security and covered parking and shite but I really would just rather live in a place where friends can come and go easily. I also don't love apartment complexes that feel like hotels. I know tons of nice places are like that , it just feels weird.

Townies.... Before there were hipsters, were not the same as hipsters to a degree. I think 70s and 80s townies, by and large, were poor students and recent students who created fashion out of thrift shop wear. There were almost no tattooes at this time nor piercings. Many of the people who were of that genre who I knew are now successful business people. Some stayed in that element, per say , but most wear ties, have normal hair, and live the life of a college grad in the South. It was NOT hippy... If anything, it was rebelling against the hippy schtick as well as the Frat life. (Who all dressed exactly the same)
I think they thrift shop look was part necessity and part ironic style. Some took it to extremes, but that is humans. I think by the end of the 80s and into the early 90s, the scene, due in large part to the success of the music, started getting more and more interlopers. People coming from out of the area to join a band and somehow get into the music scene. Some were good actually, but for every one of them, you had 20 who were posers whose sole goal was to look a little more shocking and "alternative" than the rest.
By the 90s, they all had tattooes and other random stupid stuff and it was a race to what is now hipsterism. WSP also gave our town a whole new element which was the Frat Hippy and the dirty hippy. Both of which also sucked in their own rights.
Bill Berry wore jeans and a black or white tee shirt and had somewhat normal hair but he was of the townie scene. There were actually a lot like him... Other than being a famous drummer ..

The Best Western on Milledge/Baxter (where the old Shane's Rib Shack once stood) is being remodeled, but apparently they're building a completely separate high rise.... wtf

The claim to fame party was a post concert party that the High Hat owner had arranged to hold in our place. Widespread Panic was playing under the alias "Bar Tab" one night for a private charity invitation only benefit show for Vic Chestnut. The front door was locked and all attendees came in through the back alley on Jackson Street where they had security people checking the list. The steps to the apartments on our 2nd floor were accessible to anyone leaving the High Hat through the rear exit so all concert attendees who wanted to go to the post party just came up that way. All the Panic guys, Micheal Stipe, Mike Mills, Jack Logan, John Keane, Drive by Truckers, Randall Bramblett, Bloodkin, Dashboard Saviors and a ton more were partying in our pad
holy shite that's a cool story. I made the most of my time in athens but damn it would've been cool to be there in an earlier era.
