2010 to 2013. Id probably pass by 8-9 homeless just walking down broadstreet to my car on week nights. Tons of trash. I understand why people are nostalgic and all but I just don't have it anymore. I talked with a lady who grew up in Athens and went to school in the 80s and she said it was night and day.
Pull up a chair sonny, we need to have a talk.
My wife was born in Athens, my son was born in Athens, and I've lived here for 19 years. I've also lived in Atlanta and Charleston. I've vacationed in New Orleans 2x and Savannah 3x. Miami and Tampa? Check. Laid back Key West? Check. I vacationed for a week at a friend's place on the lower east side of Manhattan. Ive spent my fair share of time in super trendy Ashville. I've been to London, Dubai, and Munich, recreationally.
I've been to Sacramento, Dallas, Boston, and Minneapolis on business trips, which isn't the same as spending recreational time there, but offers some glimmer regarding people/places/things.
I am by far NOT the most traveled person on this site. Alot of the people here seem to have travelled alot more than I have.
But what I have to offer is what I have to offer.
And that is this....
Athens is a very unique and wonderful place.
If you think Athens is trashy, you are a fricking idiot. You must have been raised in some lily white suburb like Alpharetta, by yankee parents.
Beyond you having no life experience, you are also an idiot for not knowing there are two homeless shelters downtown. Not one, but two. You say having corporate chains moving in might clean up the place? Are the corporate chains going to pool their money together and relocate two homeless shelters to Oglethorpe county? And how do you think Oglethorpe is going to feel about that? Did you live downtown for three years and see all these homeless people every night, but never knew there were homeless shelters there?
Maybe John Taffer should come in and do a makeover of every bar in Athens. Everything can be shiny, everything can be finger foods and marshmallow cocktails, and if we can just get a Ruth's Chris steakhouse, maybe all those worthless disgusting wretches who don't have a home will all go somewhere else. Disgusting poor people and their homelessness... makes me sick...
Ok son. Talk is over.

Her sign pissed me off. Multiple occasions.
Oh, ok. I thought that was some slang I didn't know for porking behind a bush downtown.
I've always wanted to take pictures of their signs just to compare them month to month. I always liked the dude that asks for money for the trip he's making up to Alaska next month. That dude has been working on making that trip for at least two years now.

You also said you've dipped the pen in the opposite sex's ink before, too. I didn't know if you were having an identity crisis or something

The worst we had were rich sorority girls in 318Is with deadhead stickers. They were pretty and their Dads didn't pay them enough attention. That meant they were easy to trick into horrible things.
The rich boys joined a fraternity and they stayed away from down town most of the week.
Good times...

Naw dude. I've been with the same sexy piece of arse for almost 3 years now. He's the whole reason I'm moving to Athens at the end of the month

There were no coffee places down town until like 1994. Then there were three all at once.

I lived down on vine street in a house me and 4 other guys rented. The brothers left us alone cause they knew we didn't have shite...except the ones that sold weed...they were our boys.
Plus...I'm not rich but I do okay and I would bet that kids driving $40k cars living in high end apartments are extensions of their parents. Up to their nose in debt trying to hang on as long as they can until the bills come due. we had them in the late '80's but probably not at this level.
I just hate to see this canned franchised crap grow in Athens...which was mostly and eclectic local scene. How long before we get a Bubba Gumps, have a few drinks at Coyote Ugly and go see bands at House Of Blues?

Some valid points but some not.
First off, you know nothing about my experiences in Athens or world experiences. I've traveled around a bit and I've managed to see some stuff. The worst shite I've ever seen was in Munich. That has little to do with anything.
Maybe "trashy" wasn't the right word. But if you don't acknowledge that the downtown area has a piss poor infrastructure, a cleanliness problem, and other serious problems, I don't know what to tell you. I know for a fact that an insurance agency forced a business in the downtown area at its highest risk level because the insurance company deemed the downtown area a hazard zone.
The homeless example I gave is just the example I gave. Maybe a poor one. And the homeless I knew most certainly weren't staying at the shelters. but nevertheless, that wasn't the main point.
That's all I really have to say for now about this.

Because higher risk translates into higher premiums. Color me shocked.

Obviously, but it's not good that they consider Athens a hazard zone.
That's it. Everyone can disagree with me all they want, I might be wrong. I don't care. I'm done with this thread.
