JHC says that some former DBs who are currently in the NFL said their current playbooks aren't as big as the one at UGA.

That's absolutely inexcusable. Many of us have said the whole time the biggest issue is the playbook is just too got dang complicated. These are 19 year old kids, they don't need to memorize 100+ pages of plays. These guys are natural born athletes who have been making plays for years..just put em on the field, don't make em overthink themselves and just let em fly around to the football.

I've also mentioned that's why I think Swann has regressed so much this year. Last year when we had NFL dudes surrounding him they had their shite covered so Swann was free to just ball out. But now nobody around him knows what they're doing so he has to play a lot more cautious and it shows. At any rate, it blows my mind that we are continuing to operate with this type of system, if that is indeed the case.

That is pretty ridiculous but logically it makes sense. Our DLine and LB play hasn't been too bad this year because on most plays they are just pass rushing/run blitzing. That isn't the case for the secondary where they can play man, zone, or blitz (probably 10-15 different coverage types for each). Don't know if anyone watched the UNC - Miami game last night but UNC was starting a ton of freshman and walk-ons in their 2 deep and were playing very fundamental football. Pollack mentioned that their DC really dumbed down the playbook for them and it was working.

Not to mention the fact that in NFL it is a players JOB to learn a complex playbook and they have to devote a lot of time towards that. In college, a players first priority should be making the best grades possible and not trying to understand an extraordinarily complex defensive scheme. What a shite head.

This is a major concern, and further proof that we might not have the right man for the job. Having a complex system doesn't benefit anyone, if the guys have no idea what they are supposed to do.

This is how it should be. These guys are high level athletes. It sounds like this playbook is making them think too much, which is why a lot of the guys look lost out there. Let them do what they know, let them ball out and make plays.

I guarantee this is a direct result of our lack of turnovers (if true). These guys are so focused on trying to figure out where they should be and who they are covering, that by the time its time to make a play on the ball its too late.

So Grantham probably is the right guy. For an NFL team.

I think this is how I feel as well. Supposedly Grantham has a check for any and every formation the O lines up in. So as soon as the O lines up our guys are either looking to the sidelines for the check or trying to think about what to do in about 2 seconds. That's counterprodcutive.

Exactly. I know it sounds insulting but it's not..but we shouldn't be making them think. That's what makes you a step slow or miss an assignment. Just have like 10 different plays/formations, call one in and let them execute it, regardless of what the O looks like. Obviously if we're in goal line and they're in 5 wide we've got an issue, but for the most part just let these guys do what they do.

watch how slow the D lines up before each play - notice all the finger pointing before the play - watch how guys are still trying to line up while the play just started.

watch Alabama line up - no pointing because everyone knows what to do

Exactly. They're clueless because they've probably been given like 15 checks before the play and they're clueless. And playing against hurry up offenses like missouri's just doesn't give you but a few seconds to get ready.

Like I said, just don't frickin worry about the offense, call in a play and run it. Sure we may give up some big plays, but at least people will be more aggressive and MAYBE get a turnover which we haven't done much of this year, and hell the results can't be much worse than we're already seeing.

So this just confirms what we've all been saying for the last several days and that is that Grantham needs to GTFO.

This makes me wonder if the guys in the past who have done well and created turnovers(JMFJ), have just done whatever to make plays happen and said screw all the over-thinking. Then afterwards Grantham just says wtf and let's everyone believe it was his idea??

Not surprised by this at all.

Especially with the young'uns out there, he should have a smaller set of formations to start the season and work in more looks as the season progresses and the players are comfortable with it.

Our defense is obviously too complex for the personnel (as well as most college personnel, I'm sure) on the field and is creating bad results.

I don't think the 3-4 is an issue. Alabama's works. Theirs is a lot simpler and better coached. The 34 isn't necessarily more difficult to learn. Our version is, though

We have the personnel to run it, anyway.

Exactly. I'd like to stay in the 3-4 because honestly, I like it. It's a good system and you can do a lot with it. But based on these comments it's obvious that CTG's version is too complex.

There's a reason elite recruiting programs are trending toward the 3-4/hybrid schemes. Not that many programs can find the personnel for it, but if you do, look out. Those tall, long, quick-twitch athletes (Jarvis, Floyd, fowler at UF) are terrors in the 34 at olb/buck/jack. The scheme really lets those guys loose if it's run correctly.

Right, because I guess no one has success with the 3-4?

The only problem with running it in college is trying to find a 320+ pound nose out of high school.
