Some strange thoughts in this thread.

Let me just preface it by saying that I'm not thrilled with CTG.

With that said, this playbook stuff is mostly nonsense.

In 2010, Grantham's first year, we were 23rd in total defense.

In 2011, Grantham's second year, we moved up to 5th.

How come our entire squad was able to learn the defense by year 2 when he first started, despite 90% being recruited for a 4-3 and having never played in a 3-4 if the defense is too hard for kids to learn in a couple of years?

You guys are too blinded by your hate of CTG to realize how ridiculous it is to say things like "3rd and 4th year guys can't even learn it because it's so complex." Of course they can. Our entire squad learned it in 2 when he first got here. If a player doesn't learn it in 3 or 4, that's completely on them.

Further, I can't believe anyone is surprised that the defense has struggled. We replaced everyone. We're playing freshmen behind freshmen. What do you guys expect?

I've got some more news for you because I can look into my crystal ball here. Next year after Murray leaves, our offense is going to take a step back. It won't be as good. There will be times where Hutson Mason and the receivers look out of sync. Guess what, the year after that with a redshirt freshman, we'll be even worse. Our offense will stall regularly. It won't be because Bobo doesn't know what he's doing. It won't be because it's too complex. It will be because inexperienced guys make mistakes from inexperience and uncertainty.

Now, if you want to complain about how we don't seem to grasp that when we tackle someone we want them to move backwards, or that Damian Swann hasn't used his arms in a tackle yet this year, or how we have a terrible habit of leaving our feet for no reason and it causes us to miss tackles, or that when we blitz we too often stay engaged with the block instead of defeating the block, or any of the other multitude of mistakes we make repeatedly then I'm all for it.

But this playbook crap is mostly for the birds. If we hadn't self imposed sanctions down to 70 players a couple years ago and had a roster of up and coming JRs and SRs on the field on defense, you wouldn't see near as much confusion or other issues.

Keep in mind we didn't beat a single good team in 2011. That stat is largely a reflection of the scrubs we played. We gave up a lot of points to LSU, SC, Boise St, and Mich State.

Richt's fault.

I'm gonna agree with this stance....The playbook might be big, but I doubt Grantham is reaching to page 249 for play calls. Sounds like excuse making to me.

Supposedly Grantham has a check for any and every formation the O lines up in. So as soon as the O lines up our guys are either looking to the sidelines for the check or trying to think about what to do in about 2 seconds.

Just give them Rommel's standing rule: "In the absence of orders, go find something and kill it."

Do what? When did we "self impose sanctions"?
First I've heard of this.

I know we don't oversign kids but thats far from
"self imposed" limit of 70 kids. (smoetimes it does workout that way)

You mean like 5th year senior Aaron Murray looked last weekend? Like that?

I just want to field a complete team and at the end of the day that falls onto the shoulders of all of the coaches. If it's schematics fix it. If it's technique and fundamentals teach them. If the talent isn't there go recruit it. I'm tired of the same lame duck excuses about why we're this or why we're not that. Just win.

Gotta say, this was a lot of the problem we had with Groh as well. A number of guys commented on the complicated nature of the 3-4 and Groh's "scheme". We've had some awful games so far this season, but, for a change, it hasn't been because our defense has given away the game - in fact, the second half has been amazing all season (half time adjustments). I just don't think the 3-4 is right for college.

Recruiting can be a factor as why we have so many freshman playing but then again you can't really expect a recruit playing only 3yrs then leave for the NFL. Well maybe now Richt and company needs to start thinking this for 2-3 guys in every class. Also you can't really expect that your recruit is going to steal from your players or ride around town with unmarked gun and then being kicked off the team. Imagine if we had Marshall at cb still? What if we also still had Crowell with Gurley and Marshall? That would be freaking sick, crowell was the man, the way he played against usc was just a thing of beauty! Damn I wish we still had him!

Also we had a bunch of transfers, some in the 2ndary that would be upperclassman at uga today. To bad they didn't stick around...D Owens, J Love...

I also think mason should be more playing time this yr. Like anytime we go up 3tds, put him in for 1 drive. Instead of waiting until moop up duty and have him hand the ball off.
