Can Burns play up close to the line?

I think most of us would be more qualified to comment on Sam Moeller's play since, you know, he's actually played safety in a college game before

wait, what? When did this happen?

I mean he is, but he's the lesser of the two evils compared to Matthews I think. The best scenario would be a youngster like Wiggins or Victor Davis also stepping up, though I think Davis is playing CB right now

Raven > Honeycutt.

I still think they'll eventually realize they will have no choice but to move Everett to free at some point early in the season. Raven is GOOD player but he's not particularly great at anything, I hope Joseph proves me wrong.

Wouldn't we rather have Burns at free safety?

I'm not sure which position he's better suited for honestly

I would strongly disagree with this. Matthews has flashes and games where he plays really well. He loses focus and lacks the long speed to man up very well, But Raven has never had even an average game. I honestly have no idea what our fanbase's fascination with Raven is.

Davis is playing CB. He and Garner are 2nd team right now. Wiggins is still at safety but he's not making any noise

Raven is GOOD player

this is just wrong. Everyone hates on Honeycutt, but he was nowhere near the liability Raven was this year.

To be blunt (and I'm not normally about negatives on our players), as FS he's supposed to get others lined up and call out coverages. But Raven doesn't know/do his own assignment quite often. He was benched mid-game twice and didn't play a defensive snap vs Mizzou or Duke (he did play STs but Honeycutt played every def snap at FS in both games).

Matthews seems like he gets torched for big plays much more often but I'm probably wrong. Honeycutt seems like a smarter player than both but seems more limited as far as athletic ability :racist: I'm mostly depressed that at least one of those 3 will likely start every game and all three will probably see a lot of snaps this year

We've seen what having a competent FS (Jaxson Appel, Steven Terrell, Brandon Jennings, Deshazor Everett, etc.) can do vs. having an incompetent FS (Trent Hunter, Clay Honeycutt, Floyd Raven, etc.) in terms of the play of the rest of the DBs.

For sure. Steven Terrell was the unsung hero of that 2012 team IMO

Why have I never heard of Justin Bass before? Where'd he come from?

he's a walk-on. He's Ben Bass's brother

He played significant snaps vs UF last year and played a fair amount in other games in garbage time. In the CFA bowl he played one series to spell Mastro at MLB (it was the only series they scored a TD on in the 2h)

while true, the funny thing about that is prior to his SR season, Steven Terrell got as much hate as any of our safeties now. Safety is a position of intelligence and experience as much as athletic ability. As a senior, Terrell really put it all together in '12

I agree. Terrell was a big reason our defensive secondary was pretty good in 2012.

Raven is a good physical player but I agree that he lacks intuition.

Honeycutt is a former quarterback and yeah he's smarter but he's slow, can't cover, and a mediocre tackler. I know he can improve, but he was horrible vs Alabama and pretty bad against Duke. (Although everyone was kind of bad to be fair) I can wipe the slate clean and let the new DB coach work his magic and make the decisions on who plays and who doesn't but jeez Louise!

He's athletic and fast as hell, big for a safety, and hits like a mack truck, all of which are physical attributes that we've been missing in the backfield for awhile.

But as other posters have said, if he can't put it all together, none of that matters.

Apparently RSJ worked out at TE and H Back some today

yeah, not that H and TE are really different positions. We substitute them for each other so basically we wouldn't sub him I guess. Though I imagine he will play the 2nd TE a lot and give us the flexibility.

Sumlin talks about it a bit in his presser as well as some of the individual LBs that stand out to him LINK

Isaiah Golden was withdrawn from school this semester due to personal reasons. This could be a Ben Bass type of situation where he takes a year or two off before coming back or he could be back in the summer. It's a wait and see.

By all accounts, he's a very well liked guy that just seems to find trouble. In high school he moved schools bc he was hanging with the wrong crowd. Now in his first year at A&M, he's lost a child and been arrested. Wishing him the best.

Sounds like Ivan Robinson has a career ending injury?
