Well he went through a stage where his special teams were terrible. I think he got tired of it and decided to put his best players in there.

I was at that game

LOL - it was more than that. And actually that was just a bad decision, not really much else you can do to defend that and still have the right players on the field to block for the kick.

Our special teams coverage units were routinely shite for years. We all wanted to murder Bobby Williams because of it.

Guess this thread is dead. But I wanted to add something else.

A lot of fans at South Carolina were... fed up with Spurrier a few years before he retired.

One thing that struck me, was we had a 6'8" walk on wide receiver for a few years.

And that offensive genius couldn't or didn't bother to come up with anything to do with him.

I guarantee you I could make Nick Saban burn a timeout in a hurry if we had a goal line situation and I ran that guy on the field split wide. I might not even want to run a play with him, just want to force them to burn a timeout.

Another thing I'd do is try to force teams to use timeouts on punt plays. A lot of times a five second delay of game doesn't mean anything as far as the results of the punt (say you are on the 50 or your own 45).

So I'd tell my guys to line up in the I formation or something (depending on yardage) and put the punter behind center. Wouldn't bother me a bit to have the punter bob his head a few times, and yell "Hut Hut" trying to get them to jump or burn a timeout, then take a penalty.

But one day we would actually run a play...of course I'm one of the guys who thinks it is probably better to go for it on fourth and short in a lot of situations (like anywhere past your own 40 or so, and not in field goal range).

They are expendable. Use them up, throw them away, get new ones.

A lot of coaches do this. When you use backups that’s when bad special teams plays happen.

For the past couple of years, you see all the starters on special teams? Typically it is a change to get some back ups some reps as well as freshmen. With all the talent he has sitting on the bench, why is he stressing his starters on special teams

because he's a good coach. We generally have always had starters on STs as well. It's not that unusual. Mathieu and Ron Brooks were animals on punt coverage back in 2011.

Why do people still question Saban’s coaching philosophy?

Now I’m a fan sitting my arse in the stadium and often cringe when is see one of our starters take an ugly hit or turn an ankle, get mixed up in a high speed tackle, etc. on special teams. Then I look at the # of losses Saban has had here and I take a shot of bourbon and say frick it the mans knows what he’s doing.

I'm guessing that if you were a head coach, your special teams wouldn't be all that special.

Tuberville used to do this and I would do the same. He alway had good coverage and we would actually take one to the house every now and then. So much for that shite now

Right. I just don't understand how people can be so ignorant of the importance of special teams...especially the kickoff and punt teams.

Frank Beamer used special teams to claw VT to respectability in college football. I think General Neyland was another big advocate for it.

This is actually a significant benefit of doing it for players with marginal NFL talent. With the reduced rosters and elite level of players in the NFL, STs experience, coverage as well as returning, can be a discriminator in their favor when all things are equal.

After Kick Six, Saban wants to make sure that there are at least a couple of big time players that will wreck shite on ST.

Meyer was another proponent of putting best talent on STs, which he attributes to mentoring from Beamer

The injuries though have had potential national championship ramifications.
