Why is Nick Saban using his starters on Special Teams?

For the past couple of years, you see all the starters on special teams? Typically it is a change to get some back ups some reps as well as freshmen. With all the talent he has sitting on the bench, why is he stressing his starters on special teams

Given Saban's success, maybe the rest of the league should consider using starters on special teams.

Take a look at the number of game turning special teams plays Bama's had over the last few seasons, see who has made those plays, and you'll have your answer.

Technically, anyone who is 1st-string Special Teams is a starter. Your question is rat poison. Next.

Not all special teams players are starters elsewhere.

No but most are defensive or offensive starters. He even had his Heisman running back on special teams a few years back...
Why would he risk that?

To win championships.

Not everyone has a 5* backup they can insert into the game when the starter gets injured.

Football is a contact sport. You can't play or coach the game with the fear of injury, a guy can get hurt celebrating a touchdown

Games can be won or lost on special teams. Why risk it with back ups? A lot of the young defensive guys get time on kick coverage though.

Schit, man, I suppose 5 major poll national championships have led him to believe that special teams are really important.
I guess it's good he had some talented people playing on special teams in his most recent national title in which special teams were the difference--an onside kick that dwarfs the kick 6 in terms of historical importance given that it won a NATTY and a kickoff return for a touchdown late in the game.

Some of our special teamers are second/third stringers.
Don't know the number off the top of my head.
Ruggs, Diggs, Thompson, Holcombe, Robinson, Moses and Wright are a few that come to mind.

It amazes me how many people don't want to play "starters" on special teams because they're afraid they'll get hurt.
Special teams plays are as big, or bigger than any other plays in the game. What exactly are you saving your good players for?
