Last night some of the Auburn posters swore that I couldn't be over 15!
Actually I am an "old timer" and there are still some of us out here with "old blood" in us, and Kirby could be one. Think about it...salary-1.2 mil per year: none of the PR headaches( hell, he hardly does an interview); job security that a HC doesn't have, etc.
If you think about it, he may be smarter than a lot of these guys who strike out on their own, then flame out after a few years...plus the possibility of him leaving is a great hole card during salary negotiations.

He's happy being just a DC. He's said he's never really dreamed of being a HC, and he really doesn't care to be one unless it's a special situation.

That is total BS. The ball boys dream about being a HC, if they have any drive at all.

Why not try though... He will always have a job as a DC in football.... If he goes on to be a HC and fails he will just get hired back as a DC... If muschamp fails he will have a job the next year as a DC, not saying he will because I like ole crazy muschamp...

If a HC gets a second contrat, he will have made about 3 times the amount he would have made as the highest paid Coordinator. If he flames out and has to got back to being an DC, he still would have made twice as much as any assitant. Their Ego's are not worried about job security at that level. They all want to run their own program.

Sort of like Auburn folks dream of being Alabama...makes sense.

Clearly they don't. Otherwise, Smart would have taken a HC job by now.

Why would he take a mediocre job? He is waiting for a big time program to come knocking in.

I have been told that there are some powerful people at bama that will not allow them to hire another coach without HC experience. They still have Dubose memories. When Saban retires, he will lose his control over the PTB the next day, some are just waiting for that to happen.

You haven't been told shite. This is your little fantasy scenario that you hope for and cling to.

I got news for you, Alabama ain't Texas where the fat cats are more interested in access and influence than winning. The so-called PTB in Tuscaloosa would sacrifice orphans and baby seals if it meant another NC.

If you want good HC job, the easiest path is to take a HC job at a mediocre school. Do well at a Sun Belt or C-USA team and you'll be in the ACC or SEC in no time.

I could see Smart taking over for Spurrier in a few years, but that's just me.

After Saban's retirement, I could see Smart being promoted, although Alabama will certainly have their pick of the litter when it comes to replacements. Half of the fanbase is going to be screaming for Dabo, which will be great for the rest of the conference.

Tell that to PBJ or Drummond. The power struggle is happening now to see who is in control when Saban leaves.

I do not know if you posted it as a joke, but there is truth at what you say. Schools want to see how a coach handles all the off the field distractions of HC, before the invest the future of a mult-million dollar program in a coach.

No shite there's truth to it. I posted it. Yet again it shows that Smart isn't really looking to be a HC. He's happy being the DC, little pressure, and making an arse load of money.

+1

Also, the guy gets to learn from Saban some more, so it's not like he is wasting his time.
