Monticello, I completely agree. Let's look at this backwards: When Gus gets a HC job, will it be because a program covets his ability to be a CEO? Yo make speeches, hire assistants and do Ford commercials? NO! They want his offensive mind like Urban Meyer at UF. Sure, he had an OC but that OC ran Meyer's offense. The same should hold true for Chiz. 3 years of failure for Roof. Gus has the offense covered. Chiz needs to get very, very involved in the D. Failure to do so on his part=failure as a HC.

Finally! Somebody gets it. This is what I have been trying to exaplin to TTsTowel. Chizik was hired for his abilities as a defensive coordinator. Why has it taken him three years to figure out that he actually needs to coach the defense rather than just relegate this job to Roof as you guys are saying he is doing. Thank you tkane311, for being a logical poster.

Because y'all are Auburn. Be happy y'all bought a NC last year but don't expect to be a consistently great football team ever or you will just be disappointed.

Remember...Little Brother is what Auburn football is all about.

Look at the past 30 years between AU and bammer. You bammers kill me, still living in the days of bawr. Those days are over, you better get use to it. 28-27 and AU's NC last year are eating you people up inside.

I'll agree with this. Chizik needs to take over the defense and coach it himself. If Chizik is a defensive guru as we AU fans beleieve he is, his fingerprint needs to be on this defense. Where the hell is Wayne Hall?

Chizik has been working with the defense, don't you all get it, Chizik can't coach. Take Gus from the plains and Auburn is right back to being a fricking joke. Gus is the only reason they won that game yesterday. He had to pull all the stops against a pathetic football team to get a come from behind last minute win.

It will be a long year for the barn and a sad day on the plains when Gus takes a real job as a head coach. Auburn should fire Chizik and hire Gus as the head coach and let him bring in a defensive coordinator. CGC is a joke.

Auburn has a good offense. Dyer is the man, Blake is for real, and Trotter looked pretty good.

Auburn's defense is a joke. Freaking Utah State put up 38 points. AU couldn't stop short passes and draw plays.

Auburn and LSU are total opposites.

Actually, I think AU should demote Chizik to DC, promote Malzahn to head coach.

IMO, its not because you dont have the athletes because you guys recruit as well as anybody. Therefore, it has to be on the coaching side.

I agree with you on the talent, the talent is there. They ARE young but the scheme is the problem, thats where roof/chizik both are to blame. I think roof sucks and chizik has wanted to give him a chance to do his thing but it's time to look for another DC or get more hands on the defensive side.

I know for a fact he is involved in practices with every part of this team but I think he's putting to much trust in roofs scheme. Chiziks def is nothing compared to what we see at AU now. His D in 04 & at Texas was ridiculously aggressive.

I know alot of the idiots on here want to see us turn against our head coach (THAT WON A NC LAST YEAR) but it aint happening. We know what we have and its not just gus. Unless you watch the Auburn shows and actually go to our practices you wouldn't know. Chizik does deserve the blame for letting Roof make these decisions is were i agree but it's an easy fix if He'll get way more involved and let Roof find the door this season or after.

The adjustments for the 2nd half last year were from Chizik, look at the tape. Nearly every game the defense changed in the 3rd qrt. Not saying chiz has a free pass at all, but Ive seen with my own eyes that he is the right coach for us at this point and time. I trust he'll get it fixed, not by next week of course but Roof will be gone at the end of this season because of his scheme.

Utah State's players were much bigger than ours...plain and simple. You have T. Bell trying to tackle someone who's as big as a TE its not going to work so well.

Chizik can't fire Roof until Zeke Pike signs. You're stuck with Roof until Feb.

Well, Antonio Coleman said it best.

"It's about ballin'. You have to get out there and make plays and fly around and have fun. If you want to get all these grades and stuff, go to school to get your grades."

Roof isn't Pike's recruiter.

Because all you do is play zone, you don't have the talent to match up man to man..

..well you should of against Utah State.

Any coach who is hands off like that doesn't have my respect. I prefer head coaches who actually coach rather than let their assistants do it for them. Because once those assistants are gone it's going to be really difficult to find good replacements.

Well, I dunno on not having my respect, but I much prefer having a head coach that's not a CEO type. I'd prefer a head coach that controls one part of the team or another like Saban and Spurrier.

I saw Auburn run a ton of Cover 2 and Cover 3. Not only do they run a ton of Cover 2 and Cover 3 but they are terrible at disguising the coverage. On top of that it looks like AU's D uses a spot drop tecnique. If they are pattern reading it sure as heck doesn't look like it. Take a look at the 3rd and 20 that USU converted. If they were pattern reading that middle backer would have turned and run with that receiver flashing behind him, but he just drop to his spot and waits and doesn't react until after the pass is thrown.

Auburn stayed in the base Cover 2 pretty much the whole first half. Auburn did that a ton last year, and that's why you see teams just chew up big chunks of yardage throwing the swing screen to the slot receiver. Classic counter to a base cover 2 as your outside backer has lost leverage to the slot receiver based on his alignment and that pretty much leaves a 2 on 1 on the corner.

Alabama runs a lot of cover 1 robber with pattern reading on the zone drops. LSU and Alabama are also very good at leveraging the receivers before the play even starts. What does pattern reading mean? When a receiver passes into your zone your basically cover him man to man. But the more important aspect of this is that there are pretty much 10-15 popular route combinations you may see out of a particular set, so in pattern reading you learn to identify the pattern the receiver is running which should give you a good idea what pattern another receiver is running, which with proper training allows you to better pass coverage of receivers between zones. With spot dropping a well trained receiver will know how to settle into the holes in the zone and a well trained QB will know how to exploit the throwing lanes.
