If Bama fans want to make a point saying they were the better team in 2011. Do it. There's a solid argument to be made.
Just don't present it as there's no argument against it, because there is.
And that's reasonable. If people made more of an effort to establish -- and stick to -- that sort of approach, the Rant would have a lot more interesting conversation. Instead, in this case (as a 'for instance'), y'all are defensive because you feel like Bama fans are diminishing what your team accomplished that season and aren't acknowledging how close LSU came to being one of the most storied title winners in CFB history, and Bama fans are defensive because they feel like you (and Auburn fans, because they need to piggyback on LSU's challenge to Bama) aren't invalidating their right to claim the title free and clear. And so it goes.

There's a reason the Alabama fanbase, as a whole, is known for "We beat ourselves." It's tongue in cheek but the sentiment is based in truth.
Some of this thread exemplifies it almost too perfectly.
And yes, I know this thread shows off LSU fans tendency to be overreactionary as well.

If osu doesn't lose to isu they are in the game. It wasn't the system, it was the HUGE choke job that no true no number two team should have osu screwed that a number 2 team should have. Also, had they had a CCG it would have helped them.
No 2 loss team should ever be in a title game. It won't ever happen again.

With the playoff, it's actually more likely, not less. There's a reason a two-loss team was in the title game in 07...there were no deserving undefeated or one-loss teams remaining for that 2nd spot. With the playoff, eventually there will be a case of only 3 undefeated or one-loss teams with serious credentials left and a two-loss team will get in. The committee isn't going to put a one-loss MAC team over a two-loss Bama team, for instance, and let's not fool ourselves -- if they did, the melt in the Bama fanbase would be epic.

They both deserved it. In 2011 Bama was clearly the second best team. In 2007 LSU was clearly one of the top two. In both years whoever was third wasn't even close.
What some people on here don't understand is that there was one, and only one criterion to decide the two teams: which two teams are the best. Whether a team won its conference, lost more than once, wore orange socks with purple pants - none of that matters.

And 10-0 through 2OT for that matter.

I'd say this was a pretty good discussion, and wasn't a stupid thread. There have been some insightful discussions, wouldn't you say?
Oh, WPS!

Why does head-to-head matter unless we were choosing between bama and LSU for one spot?

I say that both teams deserved to be in. You can make the case that they "lucked into" their opportunities but they did take advantage of that opportunity when it was presented to them. Also, there's no doubt that both teams would have made it into the current 4 team playoff had it been in effect then...and while nothing is certain, I would like their chances against whomever they played.

team that loses to Kentucky and then gets beat by Houston Nutt at home do not deserve to be national champs.
LSU won the conference, was easily the second best team. I know UGA fans will bitch, but you didn't win your division. LSU trumps Ohio state. Proved they deserved it. Bama eventually proved they were atleast the second best team by beating LSU on their second try.
If LSU hadn't won the sec, then I would say they didn't deserve it, but when everyone else has two losses, it was going to be tOSU versus a two loss team.

That 07 team beat Tim tebow, auburn, bama on the road, PUNISHED a top 10 Virginia tech, beat 12th ranked South Carolina, beat tenn in the sec championship and won a no doubter against Ohio state in the ship. They lost to an Andre Woodson led Kentucky who was preseason top 10 in triple OT and an Arkansas team who wasn't great but had one of the sickest college back fields ever, also in triple OT. I'd say they deserved it
If bama dosent get put in that game lsu inevitably crushes okie state and with its resume' goes down as one of the best college football teams of all time despite the offensive deficiencies that were only prevelant against Arkansas and uga the last 2 weeks. Instead we will just be remembered as the team that got shut out on the biggest stage ...frick you selection committee :(

The real point that makes us LSU fans go nuts, is that if Bama wins game one 9-6, we just know we are getting left out. Bama would have been playing Okie St in the NC game. THAT is the sticker right there. And Bama fans would be making the same arguments that we do now about how you should have won your conference.
