What two teams had better resumes than LSU that year? And I also believe Bama deserves to be there in '11 as well.

I'll have to go with '11 Bama. Although they were undoubtedly one of the two best teams that year, the fact that they got a rematch against their own conference champion when they had already lost at home to them makes them slightly less deserving than a 10-2 conference champion that lost to two 8-5 teams.
Agree completely. Bama was the best team that year. But that game never should have taken place.
Had the first meeting been played in Baton Rouge, then I could see why a rematch might be necessary.... see what happens on a neutral field. But Bama had their shot against LSU at home and they lost. That should have been the end of it.
It was not fair for Oklahoma State to not get their shot.
And it was not fair for LSU to have to play Bama a second time when they had already defeated them in Tuscaloosa.
Even though Bama manhandled LSU in the National Title Game, what did it prove?
LSU was 13-1... 1-1 vs. Bama
Alabama was 12-1... 1-1 vs. LSU
LSU not only played Top 5 Oregon during the regular season, but they also had to face Georgia in the SEC Championship Game. LSU's overall body of work was far more impressive.
The only thing that would have made it fair is for them to play a 3rd time in Baton Rouge. Of course that would never happen. But if that's off the table, Game 2 should have been off the table as well.

No question both teams were deserving, but the question is which team was LESS deserving?

I got you well it depends on how you describe less deserving. If it's by overall resumes than Bama blows LSU out of that water.

I look forward to your next thread, "which mistake was more costly Reggie Fish's fumble or the Stoernover?"
The question is which was MORE costly.

Love that idea. Maybe it's not too late. I'm sure Foot Locker would allow Jordan Jefferson a day off to put on the pads one final time.

When a team wins the national championship game, it doesn't matter. You just beat the best opponent out there. You're the champs.
A more interesting question is if you LOSE the championship game, did you deserve to be there and should somebody else have been there (like 2004 auburn)

LSU '07, not even close.
Care to explain?
Which other 2 loss team was more deserving of a title shot than 11-2 SEC champ LSU:
#3 VT who LSU beat 48-7?
#4 UGA at 10-2 who didn't win the SEC?

LSU backed their way into the championship game after shitting the bed against an inferior opponent and a string of astonishing outcomes that were amazingly lucky.
Alabama lost a nail biter 9-6 to LSU and went on to a not too terribly impressive yet undefeated rest of their season.
I go with LSU as less deserving although I am not interested and giving back any crystal by doing so...

I see the reasoning but given that both of those teams won the NC game those years it makes the premise a bit silly.
I'd say that 2004 Oklahoma was less deserving than Auburn that year. Oklahoma goes on to get routed by USC and I have to believe that the two headed monster of Cadillac and Ronnie Brown would have at least put up a fight against the Trojans that year.

No doubt you're the champs. I don't think anyone questions who is the real National Champ from that season.
The debate is whether or not that game should have ever happened in the first place. And its obvious it never should have.
It cheapens the regular season if the losing team gets a do-over after losing at home.
