You morons don't know what talent means. It has nothing to do with experience or mental capacity as a QB. Talent is a separate tool entirely.

And you morons take a quote by an assistant coach and run with it to the point that you are pushing him over AJ. Look at this three star recruits passes last year during mop up duty and say he has more physical tools than AJ. Passing against some of the ACCs Defenses is similar to throwing against air, and Coker had a 50% completions rate with 5 sacks before he was injured.

But is he a good manager?

You must have missed the thread where we discussed the fact that all of the SEC defensive coordinators have a year of film on him now. They'll be prepared next year. The reasonable thing is to expect a slump.

people said the same thing last year about JFF, correct?... and all he did was go out and put up better numbers than his heisman campaign.

Obviously nick marshall doesn't compare to Manziel in terms of the passing game... but there's significant room for improvement in that department. I'm not saying he'll make huge strides, but the reasonable thing to expect would be a slight rise in product -- given more time with WRs, his first spring practice, more experience, etc.

DCs will adjust, but AU's staff will make its own tweeks... there's a reason malzahn is one of the best playcallers out there.

eta: or maybe my sarcasm meter is broken and you were referencing last year

so he clearly can't tell if arm A is stronger than arm B. Sweet logic

there is no logic... just pointing out facts... do with them what you will.

the scouting report on the dude has been positive all around but this isn't Texas Tech Mike Leach style

his primary concern is handing the ball off and keeping away from INTs - that's how we've been winning football games for the past 6 years

it's boring but it works

True . But I have been able to determine that AJ was good. Not usually the case on here.

there are videos posted of every pass he took in 2013. (skip past the spring game to get to the in game plays)

coker 2013 at least 4 were drops, another 3 were either tipped at the line or were tipped by the receiver (the int was one of these. A couple were good throws and just had the defender make a good play. 2 were thrown out of bounds because receiver wasnt open. only a few were bad throws. you can tell hes playing with the 2s and 3s in blowouts, oline is porous. Still you can see the potential, with the running ability, big arm. it will all come down to how he learns the offense (which should be very similar to what he already knows from FSU) and not trying to do too much. We dont need him to win the heisman, just be serviceable, dont throw ints, get a few 3rd downs with his feet, and hit some play action down field. If he can do that (and he can) then we will be right in the NC mix just like the last 2 times we replaced a QB. our secondary will be better, especially at corner, our dline will be awesome, our LBs are always best in the league, our receivers are great, our RBs can be the best in the league if the fumbles get under control. We have freaks all over the field and everybody is fired up. SEC fricked basically.

Seems to be the consensus. I'd edit but that doesn't make any sense. I guess I'm wrong about USC.

I don't think you were wrong. Talent wise Thompson should be an upgrade to the thing a QB is supposed to do... throwing the ball. Thompson definitely has a stronger arm than Shaw.

The thing that would keep Thompson from succeeding as our QB isn't his arm (or his legs for that matter), though. It's the grit, determination, intelligence and leadership that Shaw brought to the position. Thompson's shown flashes of all these in his limited time at Carolina, but not over the course of an entire season. His decisions when making throws can be questioned even when he was putting up big numbers.

If he can put in the work this off season (and all the "reports" seem to be leaning that direction) he could have a great year for us. But only time will tell.

I think Maty Mauk is a real upgrade over Franklin. The sample size that we have seen showed alot of what his future will be.

what does that tell you about the 3rd string oline he was playing behind? he will not be getting sacked 5 times for every 36 attempts at bama

He was sacked against Bethune-Cookman, WF (4-8), & NC State (3-9).

Let's not pretend he was going up against the NY Giants DL.

AJ McCarron will be missed you can't say upgrade when replacing a 3 year started who won 2 national titles

You can't say upgrade due to AJ McCarron's remarkable consistency and leadership; however, I wouldn't mention titles. Those titles wins were a team effort. AJ arguably didn't do enough on 11/5/11 and nearly cost his team a title in 2012. He was part of the team's problem last season as well.

If you only use arm strength to judge a qb then this is correct. By using the same measuring stick Coker is also more talented than Joe Montana and Tom Brady. I don't think measuring velocity and how far a qb can throw the ball is a accurate judge of talent.
