I bcame a fan as an 8-9 year old reading about Jimmy Nelson, halfback of the 1941-42 team. Even more so by Harry Gilmer, Vaughn Mancha, etal, of the 1944-45 teams. One of my favorite games was one we lost - the 1945 Sugar Bowl with Duke. It was a mis-match - Duke had great players from all over the country, since they were a Navy officer training program during WWII. Alabama had very young kids and 4-F's (some physical reason they could not be drafted into military service). A great game, final was 29-26 Duke. The next year Alabama played the last Rose Bowl game before the Pacific Coast and Big Ten took it over. Bama beat Southern Cal - don't remember the exact score, but it wasn't close. Gilmer also played in that game.

1961......My daughter graduated from The University in 2003 and my son will graduate later this year.

I think being forced to go to Tennessee games & spending a lot of time in the Knoxville area had a lot to do with preferring UGA.
