Finally someone mentions 2008 UCLA...that game was the worst coached defensive game I've ever seen, not to mention our O was a disaster as well.

It would be sweet justice for TN to win on a last minute drive in College Station in 2016.

If he stopped them three times in a row, the offense couldn't put points on the board in the 4th, does it still count as giving it up over half the time? Pitching a shutout in the 4th in a close game about half the time is actually pretty impressive.

my bad, it was actually his ability to stop a team oin their last possession in a one possession game, not the whole 4th quarter. here is the graph of his last 3 years in baton rouge

So I was off, he lost a lead 6 out of 14 times on final possessions. LSU lost all 6 of those games. His defense averaged a 7 play 40 yard drive. That's not impressive, at all.

It's why you still point to Chavis as the scapegoat for the 2012 Bama and 2014 Bama games. You ignore that you were only even IN those games because of the defense. You blame Chavis for the loss, as if the inept offense was some sort of innocent bystander.

And when LSU and Tenn fans actually point out late game collapses under Chavis this is what they say; "you should have scored more"

A&M fans just look at stats.

If they watched the game they would see that CHAVIS CHANGES HIS SCHEME....

Thats the entire fricking and ABSOLUTE point.

They have to spit out stats because they sure as hell can't spit wins.

this narrative gets so old. Yes, the defense played great in those games. So did LSU's offense, particularly Mettenberger and Hill, in 2012 btw. But it really doesn't matter how well the defense played the whole game if they blow it in the last 2 minutes. What you're basically saying to me is it's the offense's responsibility to pitch blowouts and the defensive coordinator's job to hold onto a 2+ TD lead. Sorry, that's not how it works when you play as many good teams as LSU does year in and year out. And if that's what you're expecting to see, then be prepared to be disappointed.

When Chavis gets a lead, he changes his scheme he's used the entire game that got the team in that position, and he backs everyone off and lets the opponent nickel and dime him all the way down the field. No one thinks he's a bad statistical coach, he's just stubborn and will never be able to see that his two minute defense, flat out, does not work in college

Chavis was Spurrier's bitch on 4th down as well. I seem to recall a 4th and 30 just before the half that he gave up for a wide open TD.

That "great" offensive performance resulted in a grand total of 17 points. What psychological damage has Miles' offense inflicted upon LSU fandom that can produce such dismally low expectations for an offense?

In modern college football, 17 points is not "great". It's not "good". It's not even "adequate". It is "sub-par" at best. Fans don't have to expect weekly 40 pt eruptions by the offense. But LSU has WAAAY too much offensive talent to accept not even having a COMPETENT offense.

Alabama was only allowing 10 points a game in 2012 and 250 yards. LSU had 436 yards and 17 points. SO they went against the best statistical defense in the country and eventual national champions and played well above their season average. It was Chavis' responsibility to hold onto the lead. he didn't per usual

Copy/paste from my response in the other thread:

quote:

Bama was averging 40.6 points per game that year leading up to the LSU game. Chavis held them to 20 points less than their average.

So to put this in perspective: the LSU offense scored 6 points more than what the Bama defense was surrendering that season. While the LSU defense limited Bama to 20 points less than what they had been scoring.

You're right. Clearly, the defense was the problem that game.

I think the problem here is that Saban knows something that Miles doesn't. And that something is that the offense is not just there to give the defense a breather. The offense actually has to score points. So Saban, a defensive coach, understands that he actually has to have a good offense. And consequently, he does. That 2012 Alabama offense finished ranked #12 in the nation. No other team on Bama's schedule held them to as few points as did LSU. Only one other team held them below 32.

But let's put the loss on Chavis anyway.

Kirby Smart also understands how to preserve a lead with 2 minutes to go in a game. Chavis doesn't

Oh no? Then how did you win the Ole Miss game last year? Or the Florida game? Or the A&M game? In ALL THREE games LSU's defense stopped a late drive with under 2 minutes on the clock to preserve a lead.

But you LSU fans never remember those games.

So 8 of 14 times he got the stop even though the opposing team is going for it on 4th. Pretty good.

UCLA was held to 24 points in regulation. They had 288 yards and were picked off 4 times. They averaged 0.9 yards per rush.

Now that may not be defensive dominance, but the "worst coached defensive game [you've] ever seen"?

Really?

No one said he never held onto a lead, just that he's made a habit of blowing them. And Ole Miss got the ball with 1:15 left on their own 25 and had no problem marching right down the field inside the LSU 25 before a penalty took them out of FG range and a Bo Wallace gift wrapped INT sealed the game

You said Chavis doesn't understand how to protect a lead under 2 minutes. I gave you three examples, just from last year, of him doing precisely that.

The reality is that the LSU offense gives the LSU defense almost no margin for error. When you go up against a complete team like Bama, you're always going to be at a disadvantage.

Or maybe all of the NFL defections, which I would add they were all drafted because Chavis made them look NFL caliber with his defense, finally caught up to you. The defense was inexperienced and too young to handle adversity like your veterans would have.

so when the offense scores the points you Aggies claim is "enough" it's not the DC's fault for losing games late because of the "NFL defections" caught up to us? At this point you're trying to make any excuse you can. You wanted stats I provided our offensive numbers, yet you can't explain why his defense pulled the same tired mustang package with under 2 to go other than "NFL deflections caught up to us"

I've done arguing this. You'll see soon enough.
