I honestly have no idea, given that Tennessee finished in the top half of the SEC in third down defense 12 of his 14 years as their DC, 9 times in the top 4 and 4 times number 1. His worst ever finish in third down defensive percentage was 9th in the SEC.
To put that in perspective, from 1995 to 2008 LSU finished 9th or worse in third down defense four times.
The statistics really are mind boggling. They make me even more excited about Chavis.

Where have I heard that before? Oh yeah, LSU fans, circa 2008.

Lol is this a joke? The 3rd and Chavis nickname was coined when he was at Tennessee. Look up the 2001 SEC Championship, the 2001 Georgia game and the 2006 LSU game as starting points.

You've got not one, but two fan bases telling you essentially the same things. That the Chief sucks at adjusting in the second half, his defense is soft up the middle, and "third and Chavis" is no myth.
It is a myth, one of those things that has been said so many times that most have forgotten it's a lie.
Chavis led defenses have given up third down conversions an average of 34.5% of the time for his career (1995-2014). That number would have been good for 17th in the nation and 3rd in the SEC last season.

Matt Mauck averaging 3.5 YPC in a game played when most on this board were in elementary school is the single worst thing they can point to
With 2 tds. How many yds does a back up frosh qb need? Chavis choked a lead and a national championship birth

much like LSU has done the last seven years.
LSU has won 2 SEC Titles and a National Championship with another National Championship appearance in the Last 7 years.
It's hard to take you Ags serious about football when you talk shite about LSU over the last 7 year
1939.......1 Big 12 Title ONE ....0-4 VS LSU in the 21st century.........0-59

Who needs stats when you've got anecdotes?

And every year he was at LSU, the defense has been ranked higher than the offense. Even in 2013 when y'all had a marginally good offense.

If you're up by one possession late in game, enjoy while it lasts because it won't last long. First down after first down after first down will be handed to the opposing QB on a platter.
I think if he was in the NFL it would work better but with the clock stopping on all first downs it is very tough to watch.

They were right
2009: 11th nationally in PPG
2010: 11th
2011: 2nd
2012: 10th
2013: 21st
2014: 3rd
Average rank: 9.7, second only to Bama in average rank in that time

Is their any evidence his great defenses on third down get worse in the 4th? I saw plenty of clutch 4th quarter play from LSU's defense the past 7 seasons.

Maybe it's because it came from a Vol fanbase who watched every single SEC snap of football coached by Chavis up until that point. Numbers & stats don't always tell the whole story. Those who have followed football for a very long time know this.
From a strategical standpoint, there is no stat to show how the mustang package is vulnerable to the power run game in either A gap but it's true. The A gaps are located on both sides of the center & that's why LSU had success on key plays against Tennessee in 2001. The thing your stats don't show is when & where those QB draw yards were picked up. Yet there those in this thread who watched that game, that know when these runs occurred.
Get used to off man coverage before the half & at the end of games. It will cause your secondary to get picked around in this situations. Get used to those terms of off man & mustang package. Yall will be discussing those terms real soon & it won't be always positive either.

Pelini spent three years with the Tigers, establishing LSU as one of the nation’s top defenses during that time. In each of his three years with the Tigers, Pelini’s defenses ranked No. 3 in the nation in yards allowed. LSU also ranked No. 3 nationally in scoring in 2005 and No. 4 in 2006.
Chavis wasn't as good as Pelini was at DC.

How many times do you think a Chavis defense has allowed a game winning fourth quarter drive with a one score lead?
I'm curious to hear your response.

25% of the games y'all won last season were because of INTs on the final drive of the opposing team. Did y'all watch LSU football the last seven years?

And yet every Aggie admits the D just has to be marginal, top 50-60, for Sumlin to succeed. Even though half the Agtards on here are convinced the Talent is equal
You can't look at what unit ranks where. I guess the fact that Chavis' D will be ranked wayyyyyyy behind Sumlins O the next year is gonna make him look really bad.

Chavis finished 2nd in 2011 with one of the all-time great defenses and 3rd in 2014. He finished top 10 in yards four times (2nd, 8th, 8th, 10th).
If your best argument against Chavis is that he ONLY averaged the 9th best defense in America over six years at LSU I feel comfortable notching this debate as a win for me.
