I haven't followed the story that closely, but he seemed to have a good gig going at LSU and he'd been there for a good long time. It's not like he's been a job hopper in the past and this will be more or less a lateral move. Kinda hate it for Miles he seems pretty hurt in the video posted in another thread. Can anyone shed some light?

A&M just has more going for it at the moment. It'll shift back but I don't think he wanted to ride it out.

More money, nice new stadium upgrades, better overall school, bigger commitment to winning now (hand in hand with the money), better overall state, etc.

Some sluggishness right now with Miles and the LSU program. Ultimately, I think it is questionable whether LSU can keep up with A&M if they ever get it going. LSU has the advantage of being the only show in a football-crazy and talent rich state, but that is where the advantages end.

aTm came in & offered him more money, LSU said "nope, we're giving you what we think you're worth, take it or leave it". He left it. LSU will be fine, whoever comes in will be gifted with a lot of youthful talent. Chavis will have to work very hard for his new money at aTm.

It's about security and respect. With the LSU offense in the tank, Chavis feels like he has leverage. So he made demands. Money was not the deal-breaker. The deal breaker was that Chavis wanted TWO things that LSU would not give him.

1. A 4 year guaranteed contract. LSU offered three.
2. A contract that was not tied to Les staying at LSU. He wanted to be guaranteed even IF Les left. That's not usually how it goes. A&M was willing to give him this.

In the end Chavis is going to regret this. Aggie culture is a bit um different and Sumlin is FAR from a guarantee at A&M. His ego is making this decision for him. He loves LSU and he loves his kids.

If he wants to go, I say bid him a fond farewell, thank him for leaving us better than he found us, hire another great Defensive coordinator and then beat his Aggie arse for the next five years.

LSU will make a GREAT hire.

This is just dumb. Aggies haven't even beaten LSU in quite a while.

They should have won this year, but that isn't my point. A lot of programs with fewer built-in benefits will lose ground to A&M if A&M can take advantage of its situation. LSU is just one of the more obvious ones being relatively nearby.

If that's actually true:

1) It's bizarre. That sort of guarantee simply isn't going to fly at a major program. Any top-notch HC hire will pretty much demand he be allowed to choose his own assistants.

...but...

2) Conversely, it could be an ominous hint at how the administration views Miles. Not being willing to put that into four year contract -- we're not talking indefinitely here -- means the administration is at least grappling with the possibility that they'll want to replace Miles within the next four years.
