Maybe he was looking for a new challenge and you can't find much more of a challenge than that dumpster-fire.

If that's actually true:

1) It's bizarre. That sort of guarantee simply isn't going to fly at a major program. Any top-notch HC hire will pretty much demand he be allowed to choose his own assistants.

...but...

2) Conversely, it could be an ominous hint at how the administration views Miles. Not being willing to put that into four year contract -- we're not talking indefinitely here -- means the administration is at least grappling with the possibility that they'll want to replace Miles within the next four years.

LSU only wanted to pay him for 6 months if Miles went. That was the contract issue. Lousy buyout w/little protection.

2. A contract that was not tied to Les staying at LSU. He wanted to be guaranteed even IF Les left. That's not usually how it goes. A&M was willing to give him this.

If that's actually true:

It's true, it was confirmed this evening. 3 year deal and he was tied to Les Miles. A&M offered 4, more money, and no ties to sumlin. He'd be a fool to pass that shite up and I don't blame him. Shame on our AD

An admirable post. I agree, except it'd be tough for me to bid a fond farewell. I would, however, agree to say piss on chavis and THEN go beat his bitch arse

I addressed both sides to the issue, but, honestly, I'm half on the AD's side. Refusing to pony up for four years is silly. But refusing to guarantee a job even if Miles leaves is eminently sensible. Do you think any HC hire worth pursuing would agree to take a job at LSU if he couldn't bring in his own personnel across the board? Perhaps a bright up-and-coming coach might, but immediately eliminating all the potential big names by default before you even start interviewing would cripple the hiring process. Harbaugh would never have gone to Michigan under those circumstances, nor would Saban have gone to Bama.

Now that was stupid. I get not guaranteeing him a job after Les leaves, but refusing to give Chavis a nice golden parachute would be deeply stupid in its stinginess. Gotta pay for quality in modern CFB.

You're making way too much sense for tSEcr.

Him getting paid for 4 years is not the same as him staying on staff if the HC leaves.

Yes, I am aware of that. The discussion specifically revolved around the suggestion of him having a guaranteed job on the staff even if Miles left.

Not so much a guaranteed "job" as having a guaranteed "check".

I'm getting mixed messages here. Not that I'm doubting anyone here, but I guess the best solution is to wait until someone with verifiable ties to the source tells us exactly what Chavis was demanding and what the sticking points were.

Hearing the details....I say good luck

LSU needs some new blood and the job should attract some nice prospects.

I mean it is a moot point, if they don't win soon Sumlin will be out, and he will be at the mercy of the new coach.

You don't pay a coach 5 mill to not win championships.
