Wisconsin and Texas have much better wins than basically everyone they are ranked in front of, that's why.

People bitch about preseason polls being based too much on expectation.

And now people are bitching about the polls being based too much on 1 week's worth of resume.

The whole purpose of this is to put eyeballs on television screens to sell advertising. Highly ranked teams get more viewers and generate more clicks online.

They conduct a voodoo ritual...which is how they came up with UT at # 9 in preseason rankings before any games were played.

Irrelevant. You shouldn't be ranked at all. You only won because you fumbled the ball after getting stonewalled.

I know right. To think they had Tennessee in the top 10 before the season.

College football fans are so schizophrenic.

For months before the season, all I hear is "Preseason polls are meaningless! They shouldn't come out until a few games are played!"

After the first week of the season it's "ZOMG why did Texas go from unranked to top 10 it's only one week???!!!?!11"

quote:

The polls are stupid until about week 8. They are overrating a bunch of shitty teams that will get spanked later on and drop out for good.

Yep. If there's ever been any case for doing away with the polls until around week 8, it's both the 2010 and 2013 Auburn teams. I think the 2010 team was barely in the top 25 to start the season, and the 2013 was unranked in preseason and didn't enter the top 25 until week 7.

Ah yes, because fabricated preseason rankings mean everything right? Clearly they had it right before they were able to watch a single down of football.

It's week 2 who actually cares about the polls right now?

I kinda do, and for one reason only, it helps with publicity and recruiting. Being a top 20 team gets your game air time during the week and on Gameday. That press all year long without a doubt helps from a PR standpoint.

The media badly wants Texas to be relevant. One uptick in there pulse and they talk like it's a dynasty in the making. Nearly as bad with the Vols.

It's funny.

In the past, a team could be ranked 25th and win a huge game but only move up 3 because "people ahead of htem didn't lose".

Now they are soundly punishing teams for shite performances and rewarding others for huge wins (and I mean it's only week 1 here so our data is limited) and people are pissed.

What do you want? Do you want the status quo where a win is maybe a 3-6 spot move depending on if others lost, or do you want teams to be ranked as they are at that specific point in time?

That's not fair. They also won due to App St missing a field goal and an extra point.

That have to minion late the polls early to keep certain teams in play. They can't allow Notre Dame to drop this early so thy place the team that beat ND high in the polls. Same for Wisconsin. It is good for business to keep LSU ranked as long as they can so they will move them up next week to hyp the other games. It's all just business.
