So then you know there is Outback,Chili's, Applebee's,Logans,s Wentzels Oysterhouse, Five Guys, and Any other Burger place you can think of and a sports bar within a block of 2 Fine Hotels right?
This is cracking me up. You really think this guy wants to visit Birmingham to hang out at Applebees? We are trying to steer him towards the more unique local places.

The good news is there are a ton of unique places all around UAB and downtown, and the area really isn't that big so an Uber ride is pretty cheap.
The Birmingham food, bar, and brewery scene has exploded in the last 5 years.

GTFO. Bham's downtown in the business and entertainment districts are every bit as safe as Nashville or any other place. Why would people pay 1,500-2,000 a month for one of these new high rise apartments downtown if they thought they would get shot?

Do you think he is visiting Birmingham just to see the sites? I work right in the middle of UAB. I can see the Subway and UAB bookstore from my office window. No way in hell would I suggest this area for someone coming to Birmingham. But whatever...

I assumed he was looking for cool, unique places. Not places he could eat and drink in his hometown.
OP, if you dig huge strip malls with Kohl's, Target, and Best Buy anchors, surrounded by chain restaurants, just off the interstate, then Fultondale is where you want to go.

fairly certain the op can look at gardendale/fultondale and realize the poster was being a smartass ... per monticello, something close to five pts/uab is the best bet for walking distance to unique spots, though there are lots of great areas/hoods not within walking distance of five points that will require a 15 minute ride or so ... and walking distance is a relative term, anyways ...

Like someone else said, the Redmont has been renovated. There are some nice bars and places to eat around 2nd Ave North, imo.
I really like John's diner, but have not been back to the city in about a year.

I guess the millennials see things a little differently. We are more attracted to downtown areas.

Obviously ,you've have never been there. The only good thing about Birmingham is, it is only 165 miles to Nashville.

Redmont just reopened after a big renovation. Probably a good spot if you're looking to walk to nearby places.
I've been meaning to check this out, especially since I work about 3 blocks away.
Op, not a lot walking around, but just uber to wherever you want

This.
The only folks ripping Bham are those that haven't been back in the last 5-7 yrs

Stay at the Westin Uptown. Adjacent to some restaurants and bars.
Or the Grand Bohemian south of town. It's a couple of block's walk to nice dinner and drinks.

Stay at the Aloft Hotel in Homewood. Plenty of places to eat, drink, and shop in a very safe neighborhood. Easy access to downtown and UAB.

Grand Bohemian in Mountain Brook Village is very nice and very $$$$. It has a great restaurant/bar, and also multiple good restaurants within walking distance. Agree A-loft good call as well.
