You completely missed the point. The JuCo system is largely being used as sign-and-place for out-of-state programs. They didn't play their high school football in Mississippi, nor did they sign with an in-state institution. I'm trying to see the exact numbers for what Mississippi produces.

Not really true. MGCCC has 47 of 53 players from MS High Schools, and they are one of, if not the top, "sign & place" JUCOs.

A better question is why didn't Ole Miss do to MSU what LSU did to Tulane?

Ole Miss was on the verge of dominating that state and then just let it slip away in the 70's.

Hell, Texas has some huge schools with pathetic fan support and finances and those schools can't get good athletes. (No, I am not talking about TAMU).

Indeed, people have no idea how big Texas State, UTSA and UH are. All are over 30,000. UH would be the 3rd biggest school in the SEC . All those students are fans of other schools though, especially Tx State and UTSA with UT.

A good point was made about Fictional Mississippi School and OOS recruits. Who knows what attraction it would have with LA and FL recruits.

if mississippi had a single D-1 school, it would mean that LSU and Alabama would fewer schools to compete with for stealing the 5 star talent.

Maybe so. I just know that nearly every SEC program uses the Mississippi JuCo system and many other conferences have players that hailed from the Mississippi JuCos.

Combining State, OM, and USM...

54,000 students
currently 150,000 fans divided among 3 stadiums (yes, 5% of the total population of the state make their way to one of 3 campuses on Saturdays)

It would no doubt make us a legit contender in the same vein as LSU.

If Ole Miss and State would hire a good coach and start kicking arse...same result.

Tulane left the conference, which rendered them insignificant at that point.

Hold it just one minute there partner. If there is one thing I can be sure of a "unified school" in MS would never go by The University of MS or MS State University. There would be civil war in this state

I'm pretty sure back when this actually almost happened, they were planning on calling it the University of Mississippi and putting it in Jackson. The people in Oxford objected to the idea of calling it Ole Miss.

LSU rendered Tulane insignificant, so they left the conference at that point.

Arkansas almost moved to Little Rock in the 1930s. I've always wondered how different the school and Little Rock would have been if that had happened. Little Rock would have been a capital city/college town and I could see how it would have been a much nicer city than it is now. Not that its bad...

There was already significant infrastructure in Fayetteville, so that might have become "Arkansas State" instead of the shitpile in Jonesboro.

They weren't on the verge of anything. They did dominate it. Like crazy... For about 50 years, right up until we hired JWS in 1991. Just the fact of it, no need to hide behind it.

The difference between State and Tulane is that we were smart enough to stay in the SEC. Tulane would be a much bigger factor today had they made the same decision.

Alabama was nearly moved to Montgomery and Mobile just prior to the Civil War.

Most US cities like this are awesome places to live. Nothing spells stable economy like a combo of university and government jobs.

I think that was when they were planning on taking UMMC away from y'all and giving it to JSU.

No thanks. I would never want State in a ghetto nor do I think OM people would want the same. Baton Rouge is an exception to this as they have they second largest refinery in the world and plenty of petrochemical jobs to keep them afloat.

Fact of the matter is that it's gotten to the point where Ole Miss and State can't be successful at the same time. When one is up the other is down. I'd like to see it get back to the way it was in the 90's when we were both winning 7-8 games a year but I don't think that will ever happen again. Tubs and Sherrill were the two best coaches that the state has had since Vaught was at Ole Miss.
