We would be competing for championships at some point

a single MS school would have the opportunity to attract enough talent to do that so I would agree

Deal with it

no need to since MS would never ever ever combine all the "three" or "two and a half" major schools they already have

so in fact, you will have to continue to "deal with it" when it comes to your school never winning shite

just the facts

I think Numberwang may have a point.

Demographics:
Texas 11.8% "Run-Well" American
Arkansas 15.6% "Run-Well"
Mississippi 36.66% "Run-Well"

Total Population:
Texas - 25,600,000
Arkansas - 3,000,000
Mississippi - 3,000,000

Run-Well Population:
Texas - 3,020,800
Arkansas - 468,000
Mississippi - 1,099,800

But still, if you can't get 20 fast players out of that population, you are NOT trying hard enough.

Why would I be mad? Only half of Alabama's roster is from in-state. Hell, I don't even live in Alabama.

Would they be a football program on par with LSU (and by inference Florida, UGA, Bama)? How much better than the middle tier Arkansas and South Carolina level programs of today would they be?

Mississippi is incredibly talent rich - the state population is smaller (2.9 million vs 4.5 in LA) but the per capita talent is ridiculously good

You may be able to say this if MSU, Ole Miss, and Southern Miss were splitting the best talent in Mississippi. But they are not. All the talent leaves for LSU and Alabama. If you had one big school, they would still be leaving.

Everyone is acting like the school wouldn't have a better out-of-state pull if they combined. It would be completely different in that regard.

Your first sentence is just wrong. Your second one has no basis to draw that judgement.

It's easy to say that, but if this fictional university had existed since the mid 1800's and had a pretty rich football tradition (which is a fairly safe assumption) then less would likely be leaving.

You completely missed the point. The JuCo system is largely being used as sign-and-place for out-of-state programs. They didn't play their high school football in Mississippi, nor did they sign with an in-state institution. I'm trying to see the exact numbers for what Mississippi produces.

The per capita numbers assume state of citizenship upon entering the NFL, I assume. Very few, if any, sign and place JUCOs are going to transfer their citizenship to Mississippi and pay the state tax on their signing bonus. Therefore, the numbers exclude them.

Not really. Alabama has Kevin Norwood, Anthony Steen, and Malcolm Faciane from the state of Mississippi. We haven't signed anyone from the state of Mississippi since the 2011 class.

I grew up in MS, currently live in MS making waaaaaay over the average salary, pay less taxes, enjoy a cheaper cost of living, was educated in MS public schools and attended State where most MS kids play that are on scholly. I take pride in that. You degrading us means nothing to me, as you have never lived here. And you doubting our talent also means nothing really

Mississippi and MSU need to WIN. That requires getting a good coach. Not Houston Nutt. It's the same problem A&M had after Jackie Sherrill. He was the highest paid coach in college football, but A&M got complacent and the good-ole boy network took over. If you want to win, you must go out and pay top dollar for the best coach available. Talent will follow.

I'm not even arguing about what a single "University of Mississippi" would or would not do. I'm just interested in the NFL per capita numbers for Mississippi, since someone brought it up.

I lived in Mississippi for some time in my youth. I attended a both a Mississippi public and private school at one point in time. I am well aware of high school football in the state of Mississippi.

Yeah, if you could go back in time and have the fan support and success of a Bama, then there'd be a huge stadium, a higher enrollment, etc.

Its hard to think about how it might be.

Arkansas has one "major university" but we have Arkansas State, UALR and UCA which are all smaller but still sort of small SEC-sized schools, Nobody gives a frick about their athletic programs.

Hell, Texas has some huge schools with pathetic fan support and finances and those schools can't get good athletes. (No, I am not talking about TAMU).

Hold it just one minute there partner. If there is one thing I can be sure of a "unified school" in MS would never go by The University of MS or MS State University. There would be civil war in this state

We would have to go the route of New Jersey and name it some random name like Rutgers or The University of the State of Mississippi

frick, then our initials would be USM...

Alabama has 1,257,600 Run-Well Americans and it support 2 very good division one football programs. WHY?

Link? They aren't leaving en masse now. We just split them with OM.

Because the state of Alabama gives way more many fricks per capita about football than anybody else in the nation.
