Most coaches are not desperate enough to go for a 57 yarder.

Honestly once Davis catches the ball it was basically a kickoff return without the opposing teams gunners running down the field

KICK6- Gamble gone wrong for Saban. Pretty stupid IMO, like having 6 Offensive Linemen on kickoff team. Those lineman trying to tackle him....

If you watch the play again, the kicker would of tackled him, if it wasn't for the fat asses in his way.

The one thing people forget is that assuming there is no return, the game goes into OT.

OT is usually about a 50/50 deal, however given Alabama had no FG kicker you gotta figure Auburn was a favorite in the OT.

The UGA play on the other hand was much more amazing, because victory or defeat was decided on that one play, whereas Auburn has at least a 50% chance (most likely better) to win if the return doesn't happen.

This is true. People act like the Davis run was a do or die deal. It wasn't

We had the momentum and the better kicker

I keep hearing people knock Saban for attempting the FG. I don't get it. Making a 57-yard FG by a kicker that makes them in practice is easier to execute than a hail mary pass to the end zone. If Davis doesn't run the miss back for a TD, you would have never heard anyone question Saban's decision to attempt the FG.

If anyone wants to criticize Saban for that play, it should be for not stressing to the lineman during the timeout the importance of them fanning out if the kick is missed.

100% this. The coaching mistake was not trying it. The kicker has a better chance of making it than the guy returning it does of scoring a TD.

The mistake was not stressing that in the event of a short kick they would have to cover, so they were caught out of position and flat footed.

Maybe in the realm, but it happens. Georgia Southern almost returned one for a touchdown against us two years ago, but Marshall Morgan (our kicker) made a tackle on our own 41 yard line.

Very true.

Another way to look at it is that an "miracle" play is one that is unexpected and may happen once or twice in 10+ year span. I know there are cases of tipped passes in the endzone for TDs, but to have one DB knock the ball away from his teammate and into the hands of the receiver, you do not see that.

The FG return, however, had already happened in college once in 2013 (LSU did it) and had happened a few times in the NFL within recent years.

I wouldn't classify it a miracle. To me it was more of a case that Auburn was for lack of a better term simply "meant to win" the game. It's hard not to come to that conclusion when you consider how many plays towards the end of the game that went Auburn's way. Had any number of plays not happened just right The correct holding call on Alabama late in the 4th that called back a 1st and goal with Bama already up by 7. The hold was obvious but unnecessary and behind the play. Saban's inexplicable decision to pass up a 30 yard field goal to go up by 10 with 5 minutes left and several missed field goals. After all those plays, I was resigned to the fact that Auburn was going to win the game most likely in overtime anyway. The return was a shocking and sudden way to end a game I felt like Auburn was going to win anyway.

The kick return was far more bizarre and unlikely, even more so than a fluke tipped hail mary.

However the hail mary was more consequential.

It happened earlier in the SAME year:

Odell beckham, Jr. (LSU) did EXACTLY the same thing (return of missed long FG for 109 yd TD) against UAB last season.

Now, the stakes were NOWHERE near as high, etc. But, the same play did happen
