Why does Kentucky use a blue on blue checkerboard pattern instead of the blue and white checkerboard silk that Secretariat actually wore?

I'll be in the minority but I've long thought the UK blue is the best color in the league. When the majority of the stadium wears Blue, it's a very cool look from wide camera shots.

they actually averaged 58k last year. Their stadium holds 62k. Not bad for a team that has never been good at football. And not to be a dick to Serraneaux, but it's not like UT has been packing the house the last several years...

see above. Kentucky did alright in attendance last year. Tennessee, in 2012, only averaged 89k per game, far below the capacity of the stadium. that number rose in the past couple years, but UT still averaged several thousand below stadium capacity in 2014. Glass houses and such. For a bball school, I actually think their support of a bad football program is not too bad

As I remember the Nike/UK release at the time, it was an acknowledgement to Kentucky's thoroughbred racing history. It's widely accepted that Secretariat is the pinnacle of that.

I doubt Nike/UK wanted to explicitly use Secretariat's racing silks and potentially expose themselves to a claim for licensing/use dollars.

I think that's actually from 1930ish. I think they were using them long before, but not a lot of pictures exist.

Here is a shot from 1924 from their game with Centre College, and there weren't any checkerboards in the endzone, then.

And one from 1956...no checkerboard then either (note that the light poles from the picture in the earlier post don't appear to have been added, yet)

Below is an aerial view of McLean Stadium (Stoll Field) in 1946. Note that at that time there are no bleachers in the endzone, or fence around the perimeter. So, it would appear that the picture with the checkerboard endzone is later than that.

From these pictures, it would appear that the checkerboard was added sometime after the 1956 season. No telling how long after.

Well, Kentucky is the "blue grass" state.

At any rate, Kentucky was using checkerboard end zones at Stoll Field more than 30 years before Tennessee adopted the checkerboard pattern

Wait, so UTenn's famous, nationally-known tradition was already in use by UK? Not cool, Vol fans.

I will agree with lsufball19 on this one. From the pic below (taken from a UK/Vandy game) nearly everyone in the stadium is wearing blue)

By looking at the pictures, it isn't clear if UK was using it befor UT or not. I will say that Bama was using them in '62, so they predate UT by a couple of years.

Again. Exceptions are your friend.

Wow, a whole 58k?

I think we averaged 65k for the last 2 spring games.
