I think its a little ridiculous that he publicly came out to the national media. Its his business and he shouldn't come out at all, it should be a non issue. Coming out and making a scene of it completely betrays the fundamental goal of homosexuals being treated equal, nobody makes a national announcement that they are straight.

The reason he came out....and the reason other gay men in sports should come out.....is precisely to destroy the notion that heterosexuality and masculinity are synonomous and that any man who is not heterosexual is therefore not masculine and therefore not deseerving of respect or acceptance from other men.....

If the notion of being gay equating to being a "sissy" (and all the consequences that flow from that for the individual involved) did not exist, then it would not be necessary for him and others to come out, but until the culture has been changed, it will continue to be necessary.

I should think that is obvious.

Guys who want him and others like him to "keep quiet" want him to do so because of the discomfort caused by knowing that a hyper-masculine guy is homosexual, which flies squarely in the face of their definition of masculinity.

you make Ole Miss fans look bad. which isn't really that hard to do but you're still very good at it.

Look, we all know that the reason gays have not been tolerated and homosexuality has not been acceptable among men in this culture is because it is considered unmasculine. Gay men are regarded as "sissies".

There's no doubt some truth in that. Lesbians don't have the same stigma. You could argue that's because they are viewed as more masculine and thus better.

You hit on a truth, but a rather obvious one for anyone who's taken a sociology class.

So what should he have done instead? Get drafted by a team, not knowing whether the organization would accept him? Would he then out himself to the team in private, and wait to see what happens? Would it get leaked to the media then, and how would it be taken? Would he suffer consequences from his teammates or be accepted?

By coming out now, before the draft, every organization will know this about him and they can gauge whether the organization can accept him or not. I have no doubts that there are some teams that won't risk taking him, for whatever reason--media issues, team chemistry, whatever. Some organizations won't have a problem with it.

He's essentially ensuring that whoever takes him is okay with who he is. He's also taking the burden of being the first openly gay man in the NFL on himself, which will make it easier and less newsworthy for other gay men to be honest about themselves.

It shouldn't be newsworthy, but it's an absolute fact that it is, which is unfortunate. If he didn't come out publicly, someone else would have to at some point.

I don't think he's a sissy, I just think what he practices is disgusting, and no amount of "culture change" will make me feel differently.

Yeah, I think a lot of people didn't even understand the OP and just reacted. But I can't tell if it's lack of understanding or if they are just really threatened by what the OP said.

What upsets me is how many men don't understand that they are motivated by the 'manliness' of an activity.

The gender-policing in males is strong. Nobody wants to be called a sissy, nobody wants to play like a girl, nobody wants that kind of stigma.

I just wish men understood that nobody else can define masculinity for them.

This describes homophobia, sure. As it is no more a Biblical issue than not eating bacon.

The is broness. The Jonathan Martin/Richie Incognito texts would never happen with someone like Michael Sam. Don't know if that's the "REAL" issue, but it is an issue. I don't necessarily like how you framed it, but whatever.

If you want to know a scientific and honest reason that gay men are viewed as less masculine. Our entire being is geared to spread our seed and breed above all else. In short there will always be resistance toward anything that doesn't pump out kids.

It's good to get out in front of the story with the pro-gay momentum as well. It's a savvy move on top of the good it will lead to.

True, but the tide has turned very quickly on gay rights. In 20 years, it'll be about as strange as a black guy in baseball in 64.

You have been playing too many and at the same time not enough video games. A "twink" isn't the same thing as an "alter".

Debatable.

True, DNA wants to spread around and win. I just don't think that's the actual driving reason. For some it's religious, but for most it's because it's "icky".
